We perform X-ray spectral analyses to derive the characteristics (e.g., column density, X-ray luminosity) of ≈10,200 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic ...Representative Volume Survey, which was designed to investigate the growth of supermassive black holes across a wide dynamic range of cosmic environments. Using physical torus models (e.g., Borus02) and a Bayesian approach, we uncover 22 representative Compton-thick (CT;

) AGN candidates with good signal-to-noise ratios as well as a large sample of 136 heavily obscured AGNs. We also find an increasing CT fraction (

CT
) from low (
z
< 0.75) to high (
z
> 0.75) redshift. Our CT candidates tend to show hard X-ray spectral shapes and dust extinction in their spectral energy distribution fits, which may shed light on the connection between AGN obscuration and host-galaxy evolution.
Galectin-1 (Gal-1), a homodimeric prototype of the galectins with a single carbohydrate-recognition domain, was recently identified as being overexpressed in tumor-associated capillary endothelial ...cells. The role of Gal-1 in endothelial cellular functions and the mechanism of action of Gal-1 remain unknown. Neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is a neuronal receptor that mediates repulsive growth cone guidance, and NRP1 functions in endothelial cells as a coreceptor (with vascular endothelial growth factor receptors (VEGFRs)) for VEGF(165). In this study, we found that Gal-1 was overexpressed in the tumor-associated endothelial cells of oral squamous cell carcinomas (P<0.001). Gal-1 increased the proliferation and adhesion of endothelial cells, and enhanced cell migration in combination with VEGF(165). Surprisingly, Gal-1 selectively bound NRP1 via the carbohydrate-recognition domain, but did not bind VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2 or VEGFR-3. The Gal-1-NRP1 interaction mediated the migration and adhesion of endothelial cells. The binding of Gal-1 to NRP1 enhanced VEGFR-2 phosphorylation and stimulated the activation of the mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinases SAPK1/JNK (stress activated protein kinase-1/c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase). These findings show, for the first time, that Gal-1 can directly bind to NRP1 on endothelial cells, and can promote the NRP1/VEGFR-2-mediated signaling pathway as well as NRP1-mediated biological activities.

The colour-ordered antenna subtraction method has previously successfully been used to construct the NNLO subtraction terms for processes with up to five partons or in the leading colour approximation. However, it is challenged by the more involved subleading colour structure of the squared matrix elements in processes with six or more partons. Here, we describe the methods needed to successfully construct the NNLO subtraction terms for the subleading colour contributions to dijet production within the antenna subtraction formalism.

The rare three-body decay of a Higgs boson to a lepton-antilepton pair and a photon is starting to become experimentally accessible at the LHC. We investigate how higher-order QCD ...corrections to the dominant gluon-fusion production process impact on the fiducial cross sections in this specific Higgs decay mode for electrons and muons. Corrections up to NNLO QCD are found to be sizeable. They are generally uniform in kinematical variables related to the Higgs boson, but display several distinctive features in the kinematics of its individual decay products.

In this work, we search for active dwarf galaxies in the recently completed XMM-Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (XMM-SERVS). in three extragalactic fields, which all have well-characterized multiwavelength information. After considering several factors that may lead to misidentifications, we identify 73 active dwarf galaxies at
z
< 1, which constitutes the currently largest X-ray-selected sample beyond the local universe. Our sources are generally less obscured than predictions based on the massive-AGN (active galactic nucleus) X-ray luminosity function and have a low radio-excess fraction. We find that our sources reside in environments similar to those of inactive dwarf galaxies. We further quantify the accretion distribution of the dwarf-galaxy population after considering various selection effects and find that it decreases with X-ray luminosity, but redshift evolution cannot be statistically confirmed. Depending on how we define an AGN, the active fraction may or may not show a strong dependence on stellar mass. Their Eddington ratios and X-ray bolometric corrections significantly deviate from the expected relation, which is likely caused by several large underlying systematic biases when estimating the relevant parameters for dwarf galaxies. Throughout this work, we also highlight problems in reliably measuring photometric redshifts and overcoming strong selection effects for distant active dwarf galaxies.
We discuss the spectral analysis of a sample of 63 active galactic nuclei (AGN) detected above a limiting flux of in the multi-tiered NuSTAR extragalactic survey program. The sources span a redshift ...range (median ). The spectral analysis is performed over the broad 0.5-24 keV energy range, combining NuSTAR with Chandra and/or XMM-Newton data and employing empirical and physically motivated models. This constitutes the largest sample of AGN selected at to be homogeneously spectrally analyzed at these flux levels. We study the distribution of spectral parameters such as photon index, column density ( ), reflection parameter ( ), and 10-40 keV luminosity ( ). Heavily obscured ( ) and Compton-thick (CT; ) AGN constitute ∼25% (15-17 sources) and ∼2-3% (1-2 sources) of the sample, respectively. The observed distribution agrees fairly well with predictions of cosmic X-ray background population-synthesis models (CXBPSM). We estimate the intrinsic fraction of AGN as a function of , accounting for the bias against obscured AGN in a flux-selected sample. The fraction of CT AGN relative to AGN is poorly constrained, formally in the range 2-56% (90% upper limit of 66%). We derived a fraction (fabs) of obscured AGN ( ) as a function of in agreement with CXBPSM and previous X-ray determinations. Furthermore, fabs at and agrees with observational measurements/trends obtained over larger redshift intervals. We report a significant anti-correlation of R with (confirmed by our companion paper on stacked spectra) with considerable scatter around the median R values.
We present reverberation-mapping (RM) lags and black hole mass measurements using the C ivλ1549 broad emission line from a sample of 348 quasars monitored as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey RM ...Project. Our data span four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring for a total baseline of 1300 days, allowing us to measure lags up to ∼750 days in the observed frame (this corresponds to a rest-frame lag of ∼300 days in a quasar at z = 1.5 and ∼190 days at z = 3). We report significant time delays between the continuum and the C ivλ1549 emission line in 48 quasars, with an estimated false-positive detection rate of 10%. Our analysis of marginal lag measurements indicates that there are on the order of ∼100 additional lags that should be recoverable by adding more years of data from the program. We use our measurements to calculate black hole masses and fit an updated C iv radius-luminosity relationship. Our results significantly increase the sample of quasars with C iv RM results, with the quasars spanning two orders of magnitude in luminosity toward the high-luminosity end of the C iv radius-luminosity relation. In addition, these quasars are located at some of the highest redshifts (z 1.4-2.8) of quasars with black hole masses measured with RM. This work constitutes the first large sample of C iv RM measurements in more than a dozen quasars, demonstrating the utility of multiobject RM campaigns.
Abstract Acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) is the most sensitive acid sensor in sensory neurons that innervate into skin, muscle, heart, and visceral tissues. ASIC3 is involved in ischemia sensing, ...nociception, mechanosensation, and hearing, but how ASIC3-expressing neurons differ in their firing properties is still unknown. We hypothesized that ASIC3-expressing neurons have specialized firing properties, which, coupled with the heterogeneity of acid-sensing properties, accounts for various physiological roles. Here, we successfully identified ASIC3-expressing lumbar dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons whose transient proton-gated currents were blocked by salicylic acid (SA). The salicylic acid-sensitive (SAS) neurons did not exist in DRG neurons of mice lacking ASIC3. SAS neurons expressed distinct electrophysiological properties as compared with other DRG neurons. Especially, SAS neurons fired action potentials (APs) with large overshoot and long afterhyperpolarization duration, which suggests that they belong to nociceptors. SAS neurons also exhibited multiple nociceptor markers such as capsaicin response (38%), action potential (AP) with inflection (35%), or tetrodotoxin resistance (31%). Only in SAS neurons but not other DRG neurons was afterhyperpolarization duration correlated with resting membrane potential and AP duration. Our studies reveal a unique feature of ASIC3-expressing DRG neurons and a basis for their heterogeneous functions.

The four-lepton decay mode of the Higgs boson allows for a clean kinematic reconstruction, thereby enabling precision studies of the Higgs boson properties and of its production dynamics. ...We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to fiducial cross sections relevant to this decay mode in the gluon-fusion channel producing a Higgs boson in association with a hadronic jet, and study the impact of the QCD corrections on the fiducial acceptance factors in inclusive Higgs and Higgs-plus-jet production. We investigate in detail the different definitions used in the ATLAS and CMS measurements to define the fiducial cross sections. Differences in the lepton isolation prescription are found to have a sizeable impact on the higher order corrections to the fiducial acceptance factors.
