Despite the large body evidence from a variety of studies, the role of the serotonergic projection in the circadian system is still unclear. Previous work suggested that 5-HT is involved in both the ...response of SCN neurons to light and the phase-resetting properties of nonphotic stimuli. In hamsters, short exposure to constant light potentiates circadian phase-shifting caused by nonphotic stimuli, and the 5-HT pathway may be connected with this effect. The aim of this study was to determine whether a similar effect obtains in mice. We examined brief light-potentiation of (R)-(+)-8-OH-DPAT (8-hydroxyl-2-di-n-propyloamino-tetralin) and WAY100635 phase resetting, and found that short constant light before administration of (R)-(+)-8-OH-DPAT significantly enhanced the delays of the phase shift of the locomotor activity rhythm as compared with NaCl-injected animals. The transition from short LL to DD caused a phase shift, and WAY100635 attenuated this effect.
Background: The primary lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency are important medical problems in women during menopause. Intermittent pneumatic compression has been accepted as a supplemental ...therapy for many years. However, due to the diversity of the clinical view of venous lymphedema and difficulties in the diagnosis, there is still no uniform and fully reliable treatment algorithm and international consensus. Aim of the study: to compare the efficacy of pneumatic compression of various pressure for the treatment of lower extremity venous lymphedema in menopausal patients. Material and methods:v The study included 33 patients with chronic venous insufficiency and bilateral primary lymphedema of the lower limbs. Group A consisted of 10 patients aged from 46 to 56 years (mean age 51.2 years) who had used monthly therapy, treatments consisting of manual lymphatic drainage, multi-layer bandaging and intermittent pneumatic compression with a pressure of 120 mm Hg. Group B consisted of 10 patients aged from 45 to 58 years (mean age 53.3 years) who had identical basic treatment as group A, and intermittent pneumatic compression with a pressure of 60 mm Hg. Group C (control) consisted of 13 patients aged from 44 to 57 years (mean age 52.8 years) who were using only primary treatment without intermittent pneumatic compression. Results: It was found out that the greatest reduction in edema in patients undergoing compression settings with a pressure of 120 mm Hg. Comparison of the percentage reduction in edema showed a statistically significant advantage for group A to groups B and C, both for changes in the right (p = 0.01) and left limb (p = 0.01). Results in patients undergoing intermittent pneumatic compression with a lower pressure (60 mm Hg) were similar to those obtained in the control group. Conclusions: Intermittent pneumatic compression with a pressure of 120 mm Hg significantly helps to reduce the venous lymphedema in patients with menopause. It appears that the procedures with a pressure of 60 mm Hg are ineffective.
Nowadays, modern and more attractive methods of conservative treatment of urinary stress incontinence are sought. Authors' attention has focused on vibration training which is a new form of ...rehabilitation and fitness. Fitness centers, training rooms and rehabilitation centers are equipped with vibration platforms. The literature reports an increase in muscle strength and mechanical power as a result of vibration training. There are scientific rationales for assuming a positive impact of this form of training on the pelvic floor muscles. However, this aspect requires verification. Electrical stimulation is a conventional method of treatment of urinary stress incontinence. There has been good evidence for effectiveness of electrotherapy in strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles. The possibility of applying these methods depend on the age and general physical condition of women with urinary stress incontinence.
The analysis of the structure of fl oral nectaries of Rhododendron catawbiense Michx. was performed using stereoscopic, light and scanning electron microscopy. Nectaries were sampled at different ...development stages: closed bud, budburst and full bloom. The nectary gland exhibits clear ribbings corresponding to fi ve small ribs of the ovary. In the top part of the gland, unicellular and multicellular non-glandular trichomes occur in great density. The upper surface of the nectary differs from its lateral surface by a stronger degree of cuticle development. Stomata are evenly distributed on the upper surface and in the higher regions of the lateral wall. The cuticle forms clear striae on the surface of stomatal cells. Stomata at different development stages were observed, as well as the beginning of nectar secretion which takes places already in the closed bud.
We report a 24-year-old patient with neurogenic bladder due to myelomeningocele (MMC) who received a kidney transplant without prior bladder reconstruction. Following transplantation recurrent ...episodes of febrile pyelonephritis were observed with elevations of creatinine. A year after Tx a bladder augmentation was performed with appendicostomy to enable intermittent catheterization. Following surgery only sporadic episodes of UTI have been observed and his renal function is stable.
bladder reconstruction surgery in patients with neurogenic bladder is feasible post transplantation though the optimal timing is prior to a kidney Tx.

The morphology of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Hamil.) pollen grains was studied after adding zinc to the substrate in doses of: 0, 1, 500 and 1000 mg/pot.The observations were carried using both light ...and scanning electron microscopy. The largest pollen grains were found at dose of 500 mg/pot. Approximately 10 percent of the grains with such abnormalities in sporoderm structure as various types of swellings, mostly ring-shaped, were found under high concentrations of Zn (500 and 1000 mg/pot). The greatest number of deformed grains (over 40 percent), deeply plicated or strongly flattened, were observed at the dose of 1000 mg/pot. All of the described deformations related to excess Zn are documented photographically
