A brief review of marine fishery development in Southeast Asia is given, with emphasis on the phase of rapid growth of catches that prevailed in the 1960s-1970s, and on the high expectations this ...phase generated, especially in the six countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The problems of the 1980s are related to stagnating or even declining catches and serious environmental problems in coastal populations. Environmental interventions (e.g. construction of artificial reefs; replanting of seagrasses and mangroves; conducting environmentally benign forms of coastal aquaculture; etc.) are proposed as necessary complements to any fishery-management or pollution-control scheme.
The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that regional myocardial washout of technetium-99m teboroxime is slowed in the presence of coronary stenosis. Washout was assessed in 33 catheterized ...patients and in 13 with a low likelihood of coronary artery disease, using a triple detector camera and dynamic single-photon emission computed tomography, with serial 1-minute acquisitions after injection of 20 to 25 mCi of teboroxime at the third minute of adenosine-induced hyperemia. Washout was measured as the percent change in counts between the first, second and third minutes after injection, as measured in 6 short-axis myocardial regions of interest. Myocardial regions were classified as ischemic (> or = 50% diameter stenosis and no prior myocardial infarct), infarcted, normal (no significant coronary stenosis) or "low likelihood" (from the 13 patients with a low likelihood of coronary artery disease). Teboroxime washout was significantly (p < 0.001) slowed in the ischemic myocardium (12.7 +/- 8.3%) compared with the normal (18.5 +/- 5.7%), low-likelihood (17.8 +/- 6.1%) and infarcted (17.8 +/- 4.4%) zones. There was regional variability in washout rates (% washout/min), with the anterior wall having the lowest (13.8 +/- 3.4%/min) and the inferior wall the highest (20.7 +/- 7.9%/min) values. In regard to individual coronary territories, 21 of 41 ischemic, noninfarcted territories (51%) had abnormal washout compared with 3 of 43 normal territories (7%) (p = 0.001). In conclusion, regional washout of teboroxime is detectably slowed in ischemic, noninfarcted myocardium. The clinical value of washout analysis in teboroxime single-photon emission computed tomography warrants further investigation.

Complications after ventilation tube insertion for middle ear effusion in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma are frequent. This may compromise the overall benefit obtained from the procedure. ...This study evaluates the hearing improvement after tube insertion compared with observation alone to see if the benefits of the procedure outweigh its potential complications.

Patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and middle ear effusion were randomized for preradiotherapy ventilation tube insertion or observation. Audiologic assessment with a pure-tone audiogram was performed before the procedure, after ventilation tube insertion, and at fixed intervals after irradiation. Audiologic outcome was compared between the two groups.
Air-conduction threshold and air-bone gap on a pure-tone audiogram at different intervals after radiotherapy.
There was no significant difference in hearing threshold changes between the two groups for up to 4 years. Both groups had air-bone gap improvement following radiotherapy and the improvement was not significantly different between the two groups. The proportion of patients with closure of the air-bone gap on follow-up was not different between the two groups.
Ventilation tube insertion before radiotherapy did not offer additional hearing benefit when compared with observation alone. The procedure had no deleterious effect on hearing for up to 4 years.
A 19-month-old Chinese girl presented with pathological fracture of her right distal tibia. Peripheral blood revealed no abnormal cells, electrolytes were normal and bone biopsy at the fracture site ...only showed small aggregates of unremarkable lymphocytes. A bone marrow study could not provide a definitive diagnosis of acute leukaemia on morphology and immunohistochemistry. A diagnosis of precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was unequivocally confirmed by a cytogenetic study which showed a hyperdiploid clone with gain of chromosome 4 among other trisomies.
