Wire forward and backward oscillation in automatic feeding tungsten inert gas (TIG) process have been pointed as a simple technique to achieve high productivity levels and process stability for a ...wider operation range, compared to the conventional version. However, in this case, physical aspects related to the involved phenomena are still not fully understood. Based on that, the present paper addresses a characterization analysis of low frequency dynamic wire feeding process, in order to yield some contribution to the knowledge gain of these phenomena. Both conventional automatic feeding and autogenous process were taken as a reference. The study covers system description as well as metal transfer modes, welding pool temperature gradient, and respective weld geometry. Bead on plate welding was performed and monitored with high-speed and thermographic cameras. Dynamic oscillation showed good stability and proved to be more flexible among other versions, as feeding speed and power do not need to be correlated. In order to enable proper wire dynamic movement monitoring, a special motion measuring system was developed.
The use of variants of the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process has become an affordable option in industry. Alternating current–gas metal arc welding (AC-GMAW) arises as one of them, providing ...additional degrees of freedom for process controllability and versatility. This study focused on the analysis of a complex waveform of the AC-GMAW process for welding stainless steel, employed in modern synergic programs, which has not been widely disseminated in the technical literature and assessed scientifically. The main objective was to characterize the effects of high-intensity pulses in negative polarity over the process and to discuss the potential of this strategy, since it has not been used in conventional AC synergic programs. In order to bring to light information on the phenomena involved, such as the arc climbing on the wire electrode, advanced techniques of high-speed videography were used, synchronized with the acquisition of electrical welding process signals, as well as infrared thermography, to verify the evolution of the cooling of the piece after welding. The results grounded discussions on different AC-GMAW waveforms. The process’ electrical data, along with images of the arc and analysis of the wire melting and workpiece thermal behavior, showed that there was a significant visible increase in wire melting during the negative pulse. In addition, it evidenced how the negative electrode increment contributed to the increase in wire melting even at lower power and also showed the thermal effects on the workpiece.
In this work, experiments were carried out to determine the welding behaviour of aluminium 1200 based on an increase in the activation time of the positive polarity for tungsten inert gas AC welding ...of this metal. To achieve this objective, a series of experiments was developed, in such a way that the intensity of the electrical current in the positive and negative polarities was the same; only the duration times in each polarity were modified. During the experiments, the current and voltage signals were acquired. In this way, the arc voltage and potential could be determined for each condition tested. In terms of the fusion behaviour, an increase in penetration and in welded areas was verified to the extent that longer positive polarity times were used. This behaviour is different from that commonly indicated in the literature about welding processes with non-consumable electrodes, which suggests a reduction in penetration with an increase in the positive polarity activation time. However, this trend grows constantly during the experiments from a determined point, where the positive polarity activity times are greater than 4.0 ms in a total period of 20.0 ms. The use of a minimum positive polarity time (1.3 ms) was shown to be effective for cathode cleaning, as it produced welds with satisfactory fusion characteristics and with minimum wear to the tungsten electrode. The good fusion capacity obtained in welds produced with long positive polarity times was attributed to phenomena arising from the emission of electrons due to the field effect that occurs during the positive electrode phases.
Neste trabalho, experimentos foram conduzidos para determinar o comportamento de fusão do alumínio 1200 diante do aumento do tempo de atuação da polaridade positiva na soldagem TIG CA deste metal. ...Para atingir este objetivo, foi desenvolvido um conjunto de experimentos, de tal forma que a intensidade da corrente elétrica na polaridade positiva e negativa foi a mesma; apenas os tempos de duração de cada polaridade eram modificados. Durante os experimentos foram realizadas aquisições dos sinais de corrente e tensão. Por intermédio destes foi possível determinar a tensão e a potência de arco para cada condição testada. No aspecto comportamento de fusão, um aumento na penetração e nas áreas de fusão foi verificado à medida que maiores tempos de polaridade positiva eram utilizados. Este comportamento difere daquele indicado comumente pela literatura sobre processos de soldagem com eletrodos nãoconsumíveis, que infere uma diminuição na penetração com o aumento do tempo de atuação da polaridade positiva. Entretanto, esta tendência crescente constatada durante os experimentos ocorre a partir de um determinado ponto, onde os tempos de atuação da polaridade positiva são maiores do que 4,0 ms em um período total de 20,0 ms. O uso de um tempo mínimo de polaridade positiva (1,3 ms) mostrou-se eficiente em realizar a limpeza catódica, produziu soldas com características de fusão satisfatórias e com desgaste mínimo do eletrodo de tungstênio. A boa capacidade de fusão obtida em soldas realizadas com altos tempos de atuação da polaridade positiva foi atribuída a fenômenos decorrentes da emissão de elétrons por efeito de campo que ocorre durante as fases de eletrodo positivo.

The use of a minimal electrode positive time (1.3 ms) was found to be sufficient to perform the oxide removal, yielding weld beads with satisfactory fusion characteristics and with minimal wear of the tungsten electrode. The good melt capacity obtained in the welds carried out with high positive polarity times, was attributed to phenomena related to the field emission of electrons which takes place in the current positive half cycles.

Este trabalho abrange o estudo do efeito da polaridade sobre alguns aspectos da soldagem com os processos TIG e MIG/MAG. Os experimentos foram agrupados conforme o processo de soldagem e o aspecto a ser estudado, bem como do procedimento experimental empregado. O primeiro grupo de experimentos visou analisar o efeito do tempo de duração da polaridade positiva sobre as dimensões dos cordões de solda, limpeza catódica e comportamento da tensão no processo TIG CA com formato de onda retangular aplicado ao alumínio. No aspecto dimensões do cordão de solda, os resultados mostraram situações onde um aumento na penetração de solda e nas áreas fundidas foi verificado à medida que maiores tempos de polaridade positiva eram aplicados. Este comportamento difere do que é comumente encontrado na literatura corrente sobre processos de soldagem com eletrodos não-consumíveis, que infere uma diminuição na penetração de solda com o aumento do tempo de atuação da polaridade positiva. O segundo grupo verificou o efeito da intensidade da corrente positiva no mesmo processo. Os resultados também se mostraram distintos ao que é comumente apresentado na literatura corrente, que sugere que a intensidade da corrente durante a polaridade positiva tem um papel menor na capacidade de fusão do processo TIG CA aplicado ao alumínio, sendo apenas efetiva para a realização da remoção de óxidos. O aumento da intensidade de corrente positiva causou um aumento de penetração de solda e área fundida. No terceiro grupo de experimentos, foram investigados aspectos concernentes à influência da polaridade no processo MIG/MAG. A maior parte das informações divulgadas na literatura se confirmou. No entanto, características associadas à condição CC- (polaridade negativa) como repulsão de gota e geração de respingos não foram constatadas pela observação do arco voltaico e análise dos cordões de solda. Isto pode ter sido motivado pela corrente utilizada (260 A), típica de transferência goticular, associada à utilização de um mistura de Ar + 2% O2, o que permitiu uma soldagem satisfatoriamente estável em ambas as polaridades. No último grupo, experimentos foram realizados para avaliar o desempenho do sistema MIG Pulsado na condição CC+ e CA na soldagem de juntas de alumínio em filete. Uma mistura especial de Ar + 0,2% O2 foi testada durante estes ensaios para a condição CC+. A expectativa estava em minimizar a oscilação de comprimento de arco que ocorre durante a soldagem MIG do alumínio. Porém, o resultado não foi atingido conforme o esperado. Uma melhoria foi notada, mas de forma bastante limitada e longe da condição ideal. Na condição CA, o processo mostrou-se mais estável para este tipo de aplicação, porém, problemas de falta de robustez (baixa repetividade) foram constatados para as duas variantes deste processo.
