The Life Span Study is a long-term epidemiologic cohort study of survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. In this issue of the Journal, Richardson et al. (Am J ...Epidemiol. 2013;177(6): 562-568) suggest that those who died in the earliest years of follow-up were more likely to have a missing dose of radiation exposure assigned, leading to a bias in the radiation risk estimates. We show that nearly all members of the cohort had shielding information recorded before the beginning of follow-up and that much of the alleged bias that Richardson et al. describe simply reflects the geographic distribution of shielding conditions for which reliable dosimetry was impossible. HBOC-201 (Biopure; Cambridge, MA) is a glutaraldehyde-polymerized bovine hemoglobin (Hb) solution that is stroma free, has lower viscosity than blood, and promotes O(2) unloading. We investigated the ...effects of HBOC-201 in a canine model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury. Dogs were anesthetized and subjected to 90 min of regional myocardial ischemia and 270 min of reperfusion. HBOC-201 or 0.9% saline vehicle equivalent to 10% total blood volume was infused 30 min before myocardial ischemia. Hemodynamic data and peripheral blood samples were taken at baseline, 1 h of myocardial ischemia, and 1, 2, and 4 h of reperfusion. At 270 min of reperfusion, the area at risk (AAR) per left ventricle and the area of infarction (Inf) per AAR were determined. The myocardial AARs in the two study groups were similar. In addition, myocardial blood flow (as measured by radioactive microspheres) in the ischemic zone was similar between the vehicle and HBOC-201 groups. HBOC-201-infused dogs demonstrated a significant (P < 0.01) 56% reduction in Inf/AAR. Analysis of blood samples taken at 4 h of reperfusion showed a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in creatine kinase MB isoform for the HBOC-201 group. Histological analysis of the myocardium demonstrated significant (P < 0.01) reductions in neutrophil infiltration in the HBOC-201 group. These data indicate that treatment with HBOC-201 before myocardial ischemia-reperfusion reduces the extent of myocardial inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injury in the canine myocardium.
We describe a chemical printer that uses piezoelectric pulsing for rapid, accurate, and non-contact microdispensing of fluid for proteomic analysis of immobilized protein macroarrays. We demonstrate ...protein digestion and peptide mass fingerprinting analysis of human plasma and platelet proteins direct from a membrane surface subsequent to defined microdispensing of trypsin and matrix solutions, hence bypassing multiple liquid-handling steps. Detection of low abundance, alkaline proteins from whole human platelet extracts has been highlighted. Membrane immobilization of protein permits archiving of samples pre-/post-analysis and provides a means for subanalysis using multiple chemistries. This study highlights the ability to increase sequence coverage for protein identification using multiple enzymes and to characterize N-glycosylation modifications using a combination of PNGase F and trypsin. We also demonstrate microdispensing of multiple serum samples in a quantitative microenzyme-linked immunosorbent assay format to rapidly screen protein macroarrays for pathogen-derived antigens. We anticipate the chemical printer will be a major component of proteomic platforms for high throughput protein identification and characterization with widespread applications in biomedical and diagnostic discovery.
Stringent limits are set on the long-lived lepton-like sector of the phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model (pMSSM) and the anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) model. The ...limits are derived from the results presented in a recent search for long-lived charged particles in proton-proton collisions, based on data collected by the CMS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. In the pMSSM parameter sub-space considered, 95.9 % of the points predicting charginos with a lifetime of at least 10 ns are excluded. These constraints on the pMSSM are the first obtained at the LHC. Charginos with a lifetime greater than 100 ns and masses up to about 800 GeV in the AMSB model are also excluded. The method described can also be used to set constraints on other models.
This paper presents distributions of topological observables in inclusive three- and four-jet events produced in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7Formula: see text with a data sample ...collected by the CMS experiment corresponding to a luminosity of 5.1Formula: see text. The distributions are corrected for detector effects, and compared with several event generators based on two- and multi-parton matrix elements at leading order. Among the considered calculations, MadGraph interfaced with pythia6 displays the overall best agreement with data.
This paper provides a comprehensive overview of how fitting of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) is carried out within the upcoming Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument's (DESI) 2024 results using ...its DR1 dataset, and the associated systematic error budget from theory and modelling of the BAO. We derive new results showing how non-linearities in the clustering of galaxies can cause potential biases in measurements of the isotropic (\(\alpha_{\mathrm{iso}}\)) and anisotropic (\(\alpha_{\mathrm{ap}}\)) BAO distance scales, and how these can be effectively removed with an appropriate choice of reconstruction algorithm. We then demonstrate how theory leads to a clear choice for how to model the BAO and develop, implement and validate a new model for the remaining smooth-broadband (i.e., without BAO) component of the galaxy clustering. Finally, we explore the impact of all remaining modelling choices on the BAO constraints from DESI using a suite of high-precision simulations, arriving at a set of best-practices for DESI BAO fits, and an associated theory and modelling systematic error. Overall, our results demonstrate the remarkable robustness of the BAO to all our modelling choices and motivate a combined theory and modelling systematic error contribution to the post-reconstruction DESI BAO measurements of no more than \(0.1\%\) (\(0.2\%\)) for its isotropic (anisotropic) distance measurements. We expect the theory and best-practices laid out to here to be applicable to other BAO experiments in the era of DESI and beyond.

The inclusive jet cross section for proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7Formula: see text was measured by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC with data corresponding to an integrated ...luminosity of 5.0Formula: see text. The measurement covers a phase space up to 2Formula: see text in jet transverse momentum and 2.5 in absolute jet rapidity. The statistical precision of these data leads to stringent constraints on the parton distribution functions of the proton. The data provide important input for the gluon density at high fractions of the proton momentum and for the strong coupling constant at large energy scales. Using predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics at next-to-leading order, complemented with electroweak corrections, the constraining power of these data is investigated and the strong coupling constant at the Z boson mass Formula: see text is determined to be Formula: see text, which is in agreement with the world average.
