Several studies have demonstrated that the intensity of estrous expression is associated with ovulation, ovarian and uterine function, and fertility, and is dependent on social hierarchy and the ...housing system used. Data from recent studies involving spontaneous and induced estrus have shown that a greater relative increase and longer estrus (captured by different automated activity monitors; AAM) are both associated with improved pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI; around 10 to 14% increase) and decreased pregnancy losses. Intensity and duration of estrus were surprisingly weakly associated with preovulatory follicle diameter and concentrations of plasma estradiol at estrus, whereas ovulation failure was associated with low estrus intensity. Studies have also shown that the display of estrous behavior near AI was associated with the modification of expression of genes related to the immune system, adhesion molecules, and prostaglandin synthesis in the endometrium. Transcripts in leukocytes and in the conceptus tissue associated with maternal recognition of pregnancy as well as conceptus elongation were all associated with differences in the intensity of estrous expression. Most recently, studies from the United States and Canada have demonstrated that reproductive programs emphasizing detection of estrus using AAM can be successful and comparable to intensive timed AI protocol-based programs that incorporate GnRH and PGF2α treatments. Further, one study concluded that the administration of GnRH at AI for spontaneous estrus events greatly improved pregnancy per AI, but only for cows with reduced intensity of estrous expression, showing the potential to use AAM data as a tool in targeted reproductive programs. Quantitative information from estrus events could be used to improve estrus detection and develop decision-making strategies at the farm level. Future studies in this field should aim to better understand ovarian, conceptus, and endometrial mechanisms associated with either the expression or the intensity of estrus, and to refine the identification of phenotypes related to estrus (relative increase, absolute increase, baseline levels, duration, and repeatability within cow) to improve data usage, estrus detection, and possibly genetic selection.
ABSTRACT
We present an analysis of the maximum light, near‐ultraviolet (NUV; 2900 < λ < 5500 Å) spectra of 32 low‐redshift (0.001 < z < 0.08) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), obtained with the Hubble ...Space Telescope (HST) using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We combine this spectroscopic sample with high‐quality gri light curves obtained with robotic telescopes to measure SN Ia photometric parameters, such as stretch (light‐curve width), optical colour and brightness (Hubble residual). By comparing our new data to a comparable sample of SNe Ia at intermediate redshift (0.4 < z < 0.9), we detect modest spectral evolution (3σ), in the sense that our mean low‐redshift NUV spectrum has a depressed flux compared to its intermediate‐redshift counterpart. We also see a strongly increased dispersion about the mean with decreasing wavelength, confirming the results of earlier surveys. We show that these trends are consistent with changes in metallicity as predicted by contemporary SN Ia spectral models. We also examine the properties of various NUV spectral diagnostics in the individual SN spectra. We find a general correlation between SN stretch and the velocity (or position) of many NUV spectral features. In particular, we observe that higher stretch SNe have larger Ca ii H&K velocities, which also correlate with host galaxy stellar mass. This latter trend is probably driven by the well‐established correlation between stretch and host galaxy stellar mass. We find no significant trends between UV spectral features and optical colour. Mean spectra constructed according to whether the SN has a positive or negative Hubble residual show very little difference at NUV wavelengths, indicating that the NUV evolution and variation we identify does not directly correlate with Hubble diagram residuals. Our work confirms and strengthens earlier conclusions regarding the complex behaviour of SNe Ia in the NUV spectral region, but suggests the correlations we find are more useful in constraining progenitor models rather than improving the use of SNe Ia as cosmological probes.
Context.
The sub-Jovian, or Neptunian, desert is a previously identified region of parameter space where there is a relative dearth of intermediate-mass planets with short orbital periods.
Aims.
We ...present the discovery of a new transiting planetary system within the Neptunian desert, NGTS-14.
Methods.
Transits of NGTS-14Ab were discovered in photometry from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). Follow-up transit photometry was conducted from several ground-based facilities, as well as extracted from TESS full-frame images. We combine radial velocities from the HARPS spectrograph with the photometry in a global analysis to determine the system parameters.
Results.
NGTS-14Ab has a radius that is about 30 per cent larger than that of Neptune (0.444 ± 0.030
R
Jup
) and is around 70 per cent more massive than Neptune (0.092 ± 0.012
M
Jup
). It transits the main-sequence K1 star, NGTS-14A, with a period of 3.54 days, just far away enough to have maintained at least some of its primordial atmosphere. We have also identified a possible long-period stellar mass companion to the system, NGTS-14B, and we investigate the binarity of exoplanet host stars inside and outside the Neptunian desert using
Gaia
.
We report the first year on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument ...comprises a 50 cm diameter modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 1.25 degree field of view, selectable imaging and objective grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is performing well, meeting its requirements for resolution, efficiency, astrometry, bandpass definition and survey sensitivity.
Determining the architecture of multi-planetary systems is one of the cornerstones of understanding planet formation and evolution. Resonant systems are especially important as the fragility of their ...orbital configuration ensures that no significant scattering or collisional event has taken place since the earliest formation phase when the parent protoplanetary disc was still present. In this context, TOI-178 has been the subject of particular attention since the first TESS observations hinted at the possible presence of a near 2:3:3 resonant chain. Here we report the results of observations from CHEOPS, ESPRESSO, NGTS, and SPECULOOS with the aim of deciphering the peculiar orbital architecture of the system. We show that TOI-178 harbours at least six planets in the super-Earth to mini-Neptune regimes, with radii ranging from 1.152

= 11.95 mag) allows for a precise characterisation of its orbital architecture as well as of the physical nature of the six presently known transiting planets it harbours. The peculiar orbital configuration and the diversity in average density among the planets in the system will enable the study of interior planetary structures and atmospheric evolution, providing important clues on the formation of super-Earths and mini-Neptunes.
Tributyltin, an organotin, is ubiquitous in the environment. The consumption of contaminated marine species leads to human dietary exposure to this compound. Tributyltin is an endocrine disruptor in ...many wildlife species and inhibits aromatase in mammalian placental and granulosa-like tumor cell lines. We investigated the effects of tributyltin chloride exposure on pregnancy outcome in the Sprague-Dawley rat. Timed pregnant rats were gavaged either with vehicle (olive oil) or tributyltin chloride (0.25, 2.5, 10, or 20 mg/kg) from days 0–19 or 8–19 of gestation. On gestational day 20, dams were sacrificed, and pregnancy outcome was determined. Tributyltin and its metabolites (dibutyltin, monobutyltin) were measured in maternal blood by gas chromatography. Both tributyltin and dibutyltin were present in maternal blood at approximately equal concentrations, whereas monobutyltin contributed minimally to total organotins. Organotin concentrations increased in a dose-dependent pattern in dams, independent of the window of exposure. Tributyltin chloride administration significantly reduced maternal weight gain only at the highest dose (20 mg/kg); a significant increase in post-implantation loss and decreased litter sizes, in addition to decreased fetal weights, was observed in this group. Tributyltin chloride exposure did not result in external malformations, nor was there a change in sex ratios. However, exposure to 0.25, 2.5, or 10 mg/kg tributyltin chloride from gestation days (GD) 0–19 resulted in a significant increase in normalized anogenital distances in male fetuses; exposure from days 8–19 had no effect. There was a dramatic increase in the incidence of low weight (≤0.75 of the mean) fetuses after exposure to 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride. Delayed ossification of the fetal skeleton was observed after in utero exposure to either 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride. Serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels were reduced significantly in dams exposed to 10 and 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride throughout gestation; in dams treated with tributyltin from GD 8–19, serum thyroxine concentrations, but not triiodothyronine, were significantly decreased at both the 2.5 and 10 mg/kg exposures. Thus, maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis may be important in mediating the developmental toxicity of organotins.
The aim of the current study was to assess the expression levels of c-Src and phosphorylated Src kinase in human breast cancers and to establish if these are linked to oestrogen receptor, ...progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 status or patient survival. Tissue microarray technology was used to analyze 314 breast cancer specimens. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies to c-Src, Y419Src, and Y215Src, and expression was assessed using the weighted histoscore method. High cytoplasmic c-Src kinase and high membrane phosphorylated activated Y419Src kinase was associated with decreased disease-specific survival. In contrast, phosphorylated activated nuclear and cytoplasmic Y215Src kinase expression levels were significantly associated with improved disease-specific survival. When the cohort was subdivided according to ER/PR/HER2 status, the ER-negative subgroup (105 patients) was associated with improved disease-specific survival and was found to be independent by multivariate analysis with a hazard ratio of 0.4 (interquartile range 0.2–0.8). High cytoplasmic c-Src expression was associated with decreased survival; high expression of activated c-Src (Y215) was associated with improved survival. This was potentiated in the ER/HER2-negative subgroup. Hence, administration of Src kinase inhibitors aiming to decrease phosphorylation should be approached with caution, especially in ER-negative patients. It is therefore essential to appropriately identify with the correct biomarkers which patients are most likely to respond to Src inhibitors.
Abstract
This experiment evaluated the effects of supplementing narasin during late-gestation and lactation on productive and physiological responses of Bos indicus beef heifers and their offspring. ...Pregnant, nulliparous Nelore heifers (N = 88) that conceived under the same fixed-time artificial insemination protocol and to the same sire were used. Heifers were ranked by maternal ability genomic score, body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS) and allocated to 44 drylot pens (2 heifers per pen; 10 × 25 m). Pens were ranked by these traits and alternatively assigned to receive (NAR) or not (CON) 0.260 mg of narasin/kg of heifer BW daily (Elanco Saúde Animal, São Paulo, Brazil). Narasin was mixed into a supplement offered at 0.30% of heifer BW from day 0 until heifers weaned their calves (day 316), whereas CON heifers received the same supplement without narasin addition. Heifers received Urochloa brizantha hay and water for ad libitum consumption (days 0 to 316) and calved between days 97 to 112 of the experiment. After calving, heifers and offspring had access to hay and supplement; hence, supplements and narasin were offered according to heifer + calf BW beginning on day 162. No treatment differences were detected (P ≥ 0.18) for heifer BW and BCS during the experiment, although BW loss from day 0 to calving was less (P = 0.04) in NAR compared to CON heifers. Hay intake during the experiment did not differ (P = 0.79) between treatments. Serum IGF-I concentrations were greater (P = 0.05) for NAR heifers on day 60 of the experiment and did not differ (P ≥ 0.28) between treatments 24 h and 30 d after calving (treatment × day interaction; P = 0.04). No treatment effects were detected (P ≥ 0.58) for calf birth BW. Serum concentrations of total protein 24 h after birth were greater (P = 0.04) in calves from NAR compared with CON heifers, and a tendency (P = 0.10) for a similar outcome was noted for serum IgG concentrations. Diarrhea incidence did not differ (P = 0.16) between treatments, although the number of total diarrhea cases per calf were greater (P = 0.03) in the CON offspring. Growth rate of calves from NAR heifers tended (P = 0.08) to be greater, resulting in heavier calves at weaning (P ≤ 0.04) compared with CON offspring. Collectively, these outcomes indicate narasin supplementation to beef heifers as a nutritional alternative to improve cow–calf productivity via developmental programming effects during gestation, as well as direct consumption by their nursing offspring.
