Recent theoretical studies demonstrate the advantages of using decentralized architectures over traditional centralized architectures for real-time Power Distribution Systems (PDSs) operation. These ...advantages include the reduction of the amount of data to be transmitted and processed when performing state estimation in PDSs. The main contribution of this paper is to provide lab validation of the advantages and feasibility of decentralized monitoring of PDSs. Therefore, this paper presents an advanced trial emulating realistic conditions and hardware setup. More specifically, the paper proposes: (i) The laboratory development and implementation of an Advanced Measurement Infrastructure (AMI) prototype to enable the simulation of a smart grid. To emulate the information traffic between smart meters and distribution operation centers, communication modules, that enable the use of wireless networks for sending messages in real-time, are used, bridging concepts from both IoT and Edge Computing. (ii) The laboratory development and implementation of a decentralized architecture based on Embedded State Estimator Modules (ESEMs) are carried out. ESEMs manage information from smart meters at lower voltage networks, performing real-time state estimation in PDSs. Simulations performed on a real PDS with 208 buses (considering both medium and low voltage buses) have met the aims of this paper. The results show that by using ESEMs in a decentralized architecture, both the data transit through the communication network, as well as the computational requirements involved in monitoring PDSs in real-time, are reduced considerably without any loss of accuracy.

In the state of the art, there are very few studies on agent-based Cloud Computing. Nevertheless, this is an emerging trend and the number of studies and applications in this field is beginning to ...increase. Cloud Computing and Agents are complementary technologies. The features of Cloud Computing can provide advanced computational characteristics to multi-agent systems. In turn, the inclusion of agent systems in the core of the Cloud platform makes it possible to incorporate different functionalities, such as reasoning and learning capabilities. This study analyzes the emerging relationship between both distributed systems. Specifically, this study proposes a new classification from the point of view of Cloud Computing, based on the reference architecture proposed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the different responsibilities of each of the roles that participate in the Cloud Computing paradigm as identified in the architecture: Provider, Consumer, Broker, Carrier and Auditor.

The automatic generation of music is an emergent field of research that has attracted the attention of countless researchers. As a result, there is a broad spectrum of state of the art research in ...this field. Many systems have been designed to facilitate collaboration between humans and machines in the generation of valuable music. This research proposes an intelligent system that generates melodies under the supervision of a user, who guides the process through a mechanical device. The mechanical device is able to capture the movements of the user and translate them into a melody. The system is based on a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) architecture, enabling it to learn from previous compositions and to improve its performance over time. The user uses a device that allows them to adapt the composition to their preferences by adjusting the pace of a melody to a specific context or generating more serious or acute notes. Additionally, the device can automatically resist some of the user's movements, this way the user learns how they can create a good melody. Several experiments were conducted to analyze the quality of the system and the melodies it generates. According to the users' validation, the proposed system can generate music that follows a concrete style. Most of them also believed that the partial control of the device was essential for the quality of the generated music.
Epilepsy is a neurological disorder (the third most common, following stroke and migraines). A key aspect of its diagnosis is the presence of seizures that occur without a known cause and the ...potential for new seizures to occur. Machine learning has shown potential as a cost-effective alternative for rapid diagnosis. In this study, we review the current state of machine learning in the detection and prediction of epileptic seizures. The objective of this study is to portray the existing machine learning methods for seizure prediction. Internet bibliographical searches were conducted to identify relevant literature on the topic. Through cross-referencing from key articles, additional references were obtained to provide a comprehensive overview of the techniques. As the aim of this paper aims is not a pure bibliographical review of the subject, the publications here cited have been selected among many others based on their number of citations. To implement accurate diagnostic and treatment tools, it is necessary to achieve a balance between prediction time, sensitivity, and specificity. This balance can be achieved using deep learning algorithms. The best performance and results are often achieved by combining multiple techniques and features, but this approach can also increase computational requirements.
The cloud computing paradigm has the ability to adapt to new technologies and provide consistent cloud services. These features have led to the widespread use of the paradigm, making it necessary for ...the underlying computer infrastructure to cope with the increased demand and the high number of end users. Platforms often use classical mathematical models for this purpose, helping assign computational resources to the services provided to the final user. Although this kind of model is valid and widespread, it can be refined through intelligent techniques. Therefore, this research presents a novel system consisting of a multi-agent system, which integrates a case-based reasoning system. The resulting system dynamically allocates resources within a cloud computing platform. This approach, which is distributed and scalable, can learn from previous experiences and produce better results in each resource allocation. A model of the system has been implemented and tested on a real cloud platform with successful results.
The need for studies connecting machine explainability with human behavior is essential, especially for a detailed understanding of a human’s perspective, thoughts, and sensations according to a ...context. A novel system called RYEL was developed based on Subject-Matter Experts (SME) to investigate new techniques for acquiring higher-order thinking, the perception, the use of new computational explanatory techniques, support decision-making, and the judge’s cognition and behavior. Thus, a new spectrum is covered and promises to be a new area of study called Interpretation-Assessment/Assessment-Interpretation (IA-AI), consisting of explaining machine inferences and the interpretation and assessment from a human. It allows expressing a semantic, ontological, and hermeneutical meaning related to the psyche of a human (judge). The system has an interpretative and explanatory nature, and in the future, could be used in other domains of discourse. More than 33 experts in Law and Artificial Intelligence validated the functional design. More than 26 judges, most of them specializing in psychology and criminology from Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Spain, Argentina, and Costa Rica, participated in the experiments. The results of the experimentation have been very positive. As a challenge, this research represents a paradigm shift in legal data processing.
Real world applications using agent-based solutions can include many agents that needs communicate and interact each other in order to meet their objectives. In open multi-agent systems, the problems ...may include the organisation of a large number of agents that may be heterogeneous, of unpredictable provenance and where competitive behaviours or conflicting objectives may occur. An overview of the alternatives for dealing with these problems is presented, highlighting the way they try to solve or mitigate these problems.
The study of retinal vessels can provide information on a wide range of illnesses in the human body. Numerous works have already focused on this new field of research and several medical software ...programs have been proposed to facilitate the close examination of retinal vessels. Some allow for the automatic extraction of information and can be combined with other clinical tools for effective diagnosis and further medical studies. This article proposes an Agent-based Virtual Organizations (VO) System which applies a novel methodology for taking measurements from fundus images and extracting information on the retinal vessel caliber. A case study was conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed system, and the fundus images of different patients were used to extract information. Its performance was compared with that of similar tools.
