Diabetes is a disorder of glucose metabolism, and over 90% are type 2 diabetes. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is one of the type 2 diabetes complications, usually accompanied by changes in myocardial ...structure and function, together with cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Our study investigated the effect of curcumin on regulating oxidative stress (OS) and apoptosis in DCM. In vivo, diabetes was induced in an experimental rat model by streptozoticin (STZ) together with high‐glucose and high‐fat (HG/HF) diet feeding. In vitro, H9c2 cardiomyocytes were cultured with high‐glucose and saturated free fatty acid palmitate. Curcumin was orally or directly administered to rats or cells, respectively. Streptozoticin ‐induced diabetic rats showed metabolism abnormalities and elevated markers of OS (superoxide dismutase SOD, malondialdehyde MDA, gp91phox, Cyt‐Cyto C), enhanced cell apoptosis (Bax/Bcl‐2, Cleaved caspase‐3, TUNEL‐positive cells), together with reduced Akt phosphorylation and increased Foxo1 acetylation. Curcumin attenuated the myocardial dysfunction, OS and apoptosis in the heart of diabetic rats. Curcumin treatment also enhanced phosphorylation of Akt and inhibited acetylation of Foxo1. These results strongly suggest that apoptosis was increased in the heart of diabetic rats, and curcumin played a role in diabetic cardiomyopathy treatment by modulating the Sirt1‐Foxo1 and PI3K‐Akt pathways.
Coal-based porous materials for supercapacitors were successfully prepared using Taixi anthracite (TXA) by multi-stage activation. The characterization and electrochemical tests of activated carbons ...(ACs) prepared in different stages demonstrated that the AC from the third-stage activation (AC
) shows good porous structures and excellent electrochemical performances. AC
exhibited a fine specific capacitance of 199 F g
at a current density of 1 A g
in the three-electrode system, with 6 mol L
KOH as the electrolyte. The specific capacitance of AC
remained 190 F g
even despite increasing the current density to 5 A g
, indicating a good rate of electrochemical performance. Moreover, its specific capacitance remained at 98.1% of the initial value after 5000 galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) cycle tests at a current density of 1 A g
, suggesting that the AC
has excellent cycle performance as electrode materials for supercapacitors. This study provides a promising approach for fabricating high performance electrode materials from high-rank coals, which could facilitate efficient and clean utilization of high-rank coals.
Defects on product surfaces affect quality of the product. Machine vision provides an efficient tool for the surface defect detection. Threshold is commonly used to separate objects from the image ...background in the vision-based inspection method. The Otsu method is one of the most used approaches to decide the threshold for a satisfied result when the image histogram is bimodal, but it fails when the histogram of an image is unimodal or close to unimodal. Defects in product surfaces can range from small to large sizes, which results in distributions of the image histogram change from unimodal to bimodal. An improved Otsu method, named the weighted object variance (WOV), is proposed in this research to detect defects on product surfaces. A parameter that equals the cumulative probability of defects occurrence is weighted on the object variance of between-class variance. The weight ensures that the threshold always be a value that locates at the valley of two peaks or at the left bottom rim of a single peak histogram. It is essential to have a high detection rate and low false alarm rate for the defect detection. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the improved Otsu method in the defect detection of various surfaces. Compared to other thresholding methods such as maximum entropy, Otsu, valley-emphasis, and modified valley-emphasis methods, the WOV method provides better segmentation results.
We report acute antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 in 285 patients with COVID-19. Within 19 days after symptom onset, 100% of patients tested positive for antiviral immunoglobulin-G (IgG). ...Seroconversion for IgG and IgM occurred simultaneously or sequentially. Both IgG and IgM titers plateaued within 6 days after seroconversion. Serological testing may be helpful for the diagnosis of suspected patients with negative RT-PCR results and for the identification of asymptomatic infections.

The Salen unit represents one of the most important ligands in coordination chemistry. We report herein the first example of a Salen-based covalent organic framework (COF), in which both the ...construction of the COF structure and the functionalization with Salen moieties have been realized in a single step. Due to its structural uniqueness, the obtained COF material, Salen-COF, possesses high crystallinity and excellent stability. Based on this, a series of metallo-Salen-based COFs were prepared via metalation for further applications.
We demonstrate maintenance and transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus by Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks in the larva, nymph, and adult stages with dissemination in ...salivary gland, midgut, and ovarian tissues. The H. longicornis tick is a competent vector to transmit this virus in both transovarial and transstadial modes.
Graphenes have very attractive properties for photovoltaics. Their tunable bandgap and large optical absorptivity are desirable for efficient light harvesting. Their electronic levels and interfacing ...with other materials for charge transfer processes can both be tuned with well-developed carbon chemistry. Graphenes have also been shown to have very large charge mobilities, which could be useful for charge collection in solar cells. In addition, they consist of elements abundant on Earth and are environmentally friendly. However, these important properties have not been taken advantage of because graphenes that are large enough to be useful for photovoltaics have extremely poor solubility and have a strong tendency to aggregate into graphite. Here we present a novel solubilization strategy for large graphene nanostructures. It has enabled us to synthesize solution-processable, black graphene quantum dots with uniform size through solution chemistry, and we show that they can be used as sensitizers for solar cells.
