Management quality is known to influence depository institution performance, but less understood are the characteristics of managers that influence performance. We empirically examine how the ...political ideology of a credit union’s CEO influenced decision making and performance during the financial crisis. Our results indicate that the return on assets of credit unions run by conservative CEOs are 22 basis points lower during the crisis relative to liberal CEOs. Returns are shown to be lower as a direct result of credit unions with conservative CEOs applying more conservative accounting practices for loan losses than their counterparts during the crisis, despite similar loan quality.
Astrocytes are a major category of glial support cell in the central nervous system and play a variety of essential roles in both health and disease. As our understanding of the diverse functions of ...these cells improves, the extent of heterogeneity between astrocyte populations has emerged as a key area of research. Retinal astrocytes, which form the direct cellular environment of retinal ganglion cells somas and axons, undergo a reactive response in both human glaucoma and animal models of the disease, yet their contributions to its pathology and progression remain relatively unknown. This gap in knowledge is largely a function of inadequate isolation techniques, driven in part by the sparseness of these cells and their similarities with the more abundant retinal Müller cells. Here, we present a novel method of isolating retinal astrocytes and enriching their RNA, tested in both normal and ocular hypertensive mice, a common model of experimental glaucoma. Our approach combines a novel enzyme assisted microdissection of retinal astrocytes with selective ribosome immunoprecipitation using the Ribotag method. Our microdissection method is rapid and preserves astrocyte morphology, resulting in a brief post-mortem interval and minimizing loss of RNA from distal regions of these cells. Both microdissection and Ribotag immunoprecipitation require a minimum of specialized equipment or reagents, and by using them in conjunction we are able to achieve > 100-fold enrichment of astrocyte RNA. We explore X-ray emission from a sample of 18 He ii λ1640 emitting star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 2.3–3.6 from the VANDELS survey in the Chandra Deep Field South, to set constraints on the ...role of X-ray sources in powering the He ii emission. We find that 4 He ii emitters have tentative detections with S/N ∼ 2 and have X-ray luminosities, LX = 1.5−4.9 × 1041 erg s−1. The stacked luminosity of all 18 He ii emitters is 2.6 × 1041 erg s−1, and that of a subset of 13 narrow He ii emitters (FHWM(He ii) < 1000 km s−1) is 3.1 × 1041 erg s−1. We also measure stacked LX for non-He ii emitters through bootstrapping of matched samples, and find LX = 2.5 × 1041 erg s−1, which is not significantly different from LX measured for He ii emitters. The LX per star formation rate for He ii emitters (log (LX/SFR) ∼ 40.0) and non-emitters (log (LX/SFR) ∼ 39.9) are also comparable and in line with the redshift evolution and metallicity dependence predicted by models. Due to the non-significant difference between the X-ray emission from galaxies with and without He ii, we conclude that X-ray binaries or weak or obscured active galactic nuclei are unlikely to be the dominant producers of He ii ionizing photons in VANDELS star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 3. Given the comparable physical properties of both He ii emitters and non-emitters reported previously, alternative He ii ionizing mechanisms such as localized low-metallicity stellar populations, Pop-III stars, etc. may need to be explored.
ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the ultraviolet (UV) continuum slopes (β) for a sample of 172 galaxy candidates at 8 < zphot < 16 selected from a combination of JWST NIRCam imaging and ...COSMOS/UltraVISTA ground-based near-infrared imaging. Focusing primarily on a new sample of 121 galaxies at 〈z〉 ≃ 11 selected from ≃ 320 arcmin2 of public JWST imaging data across 15 independent data sets, we investigate the evolution of β in the galaxy population at z ≥ 9. We find a significant trend between β and redshift, with the inverse-variance weighted mean UV slope evolving from 〈β〉 = −2.17 ± 0.06 at z = 9.5 to 〈β〉 = −2.59 ± 0.06 at z = 11.5. Based on a comparison with stellar population models including nebular continuum emission, we find that at z > 10.5 the average UV continuum slope is consistent with the intrinsic blue limit of dust-free stellar populations (βint ≃ −2.6). These results suggest that the moderately dust-reddened galaxy population at z < 10 was essentially unattenuated at z ≃ 11. The extremely blue galaxies being uncovered at z > 10 place important constraints on dust attenuation in galaxies in the early Universe, and imply that the already observed galaxy population is likely supplying an ionizing photon budget capable of maintaining ionized intergalactic medium fractions of ≳ 5 per cent at z ≃ 11.

We use VANDELS spectroscopic data overlapping with the ≃7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South survey to extend studies of high-mass X-ray binary systems (HMXBs) in 301 normal star-forming galaxies ...in the redshift range 3 < z < 5.5. Our analysis evaluates correlations between X-ray luminosities (LX), star formation rates (SFRs), and stellar metallicities (Z⋆) to higher redshifts and over a wider range in galaxy properties than hitherto. Using a stacking analysis performed in bins of both redshift and SFR for sources with robust spectroscopic redshifts without AGN signatures, we find convincing evolutionary trends in the ratio LX/SFR to the highest redshifts probed, with a stronger trend for galaxies with lower SFRs. Combining our data with published samples at lower redshift, the evolution of LX/SFR to z ≃ 5 proceeds as (1 + z)1.03 ± 0.02. Using stellar metallicities derived from photospheric absorption features in our spectroscopic data, we confirm indications at lower redshifts that LX/SFR is stronger for metal-poor galaxies. We use semi-analytic models to show that metallicity dependence of LX/SFR alone may not be sufficient to fully explain the observed redshift evolution of X-ray emission from HMXBs, particularly for galaxies with SFR < 30 M⊙ yr−1. We speculate that reduced overall stellar ages and ‘burstier’ star formation histories in the early Universe may lead to higher LX/SFR for the same metallicity. We then define the redshift-dependent contribution of HMXBs to the integrated X-ray luminosity density and, in comparison with models, find that the contribution of HMXBs to the cosmic X-ray background at z > 6 may be ≳0.25 dex higher than previously estimated.

In this paper, we present the public release of the spectroscopic measurement catalogues from this survey, featuring emission and absorption line centroids, fluxes, and rest-frame equivalent widths obtained through a Gaussian fit, as well as a number of atomic and molecular indices (e.g. Lick) and continuum breaks (e.g. D4000), and including a correction to be applied to the error spectra. We describe the measurement methods and the validation of the codes that were used.
The United States recently proposed to sell Saudi Arabia advanced weaponry worth 20 billion dollars over the next 10 years. The volume of trade, while significant, is second in the news headline that ...the United States would provide Saudi Arabia with precision-guided bombs, upgrades to its fighters, and new naval vessels. Trade of strategic commodities, such as armaments, suggests a strong interdependence between countries, which may influence international relations differently than the same volume of toys traded between nations. The author posits the volume and pattern of commodities that countries trade with each other are both relevant to interstate conflict. Commodities are heterogeneous and thus vary in terms of this strategic importance, substitutability, and ease of expropriation. This heterogeneity, along with the volume of trade, influences the opportunity cost of lost trade caused by conflict. This article empirically examines whether the pattern of trade is relevant to conflict for the period 1962-2000. The results from both single and simultaneous equations models indicate that increasing the share of bilateral trade in energy, non-ferrous metals, and electronics increases conflict, whereas for chemicals and arms it reduces conflict. Differences in these strategic commodities' elasticity of import demand and export supply, along with their ease of expropriation, contribute to the heterogeneous effects.
Much of what we know about astrocyte form and function is derived from the study of gray matter protoplasmic astrocytes, whereas white matter fibrous astrocytes remain relatively unexplored. Here, we ...used the ribotag approach to isolate ribosome-associated mRNA and investigated the transcriptome of uninjured fibrous astrocytes from three regions: unmyelinated optic nerve head, myelinated optic nerve proper, and corpus callosum. Astrocytes from each region were transcriptionally distinct and we identified region-specific astrocyte genes and pathways. Energy metabolism, particularly oxidative phosphorylation and mitochondrial protein translation emerged as key differentiators of astrocyte populations. Optic nerve astrocytes expressed higher levels of neuroinflammatory pathways than corpus callosum astrocytes and we further identified CARTPT as a new marker of optic nerve head astrocytes. These previously uncharacterized transcriptional profiles of white matter astrocyte types reveal their functional diversity and a greater heterogeneity than previously appreciated.

We investigate the redshift evolution of the O iii/H β nebular emission line ratio for a sample of galaxies spanning the redshift range 0 < z < 4. We compare the observed evolution to a set of ...theoretical models which account for the independent evolution of chemical abundance, ionization parameter and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure in star-forming galaxies with redshift. Accounting for selection effects in the combined data sets, we show that the evolution to higher O iii/H β ratios with redshift is a real physical effect which is best accounted for by a model in which the ionization parameter is elevated from the average values typical of local star-forming galaxies, with a possible simultaneous increase in the ISM pressure. We rule out the possibility that the observed O iii/H β evolution is purely due to metallicity evolution. We discuss the implications of these results for using local empirical metallicity calibrations to measure metallicities at high redshift, and briefly discuss possible theoretical implications of our results.
