From its beginning in the end of the 15th century the Maribor city castle was rebuilt and completed many times, mostly as a result of changing of its function in the city. Until the middle of the ...17th century it was mostly about additional fortifying works (the Bastille), since the castle was also used as an important part of northeast city wall fortification. From the middle of the 17th century it gradually became the central dominion of aristocracy in Maribor, at first of the counts of Khisl and later of the counts of Brandis. In that time the late administrative mansion of provincial princes by construction and by meaning changed into a castle, and conceptually into a noble residence.
Literature about construction history of the castle is relatively huge, besides the author of the article Ivan Stopar, Sergej Vriöer and Karel Piöec wrote about it. The archive material, which is mostly kept in the Provincial archive Maribor and in the Styrian land archive in Gradec, is even reacher. Because of different owners and different use of the castle the material in the Gradec archive can be found in many different funds and because of that only this article shows an accurate view of construction history of the Maribor city castle.
The article completes yearlong study about construction phases of the Maribor city castle. It gives us a complete view of each construction phase, of use of the castle as well as of the way of constructing in the 16th century. It leads us from the beginning of the castle as a warehouse of the provincial prince to its climate as a representative flat building of the Maribor aristocracy.
