We present experimental constraints on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon elastic cross sections from the total 129.5 kg yr exposure acquired by the Large Underground Xenon experiment (LUX), operating ...at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota (USA). A profile likelihood ratio analysis allows 90% C.L. upper limits to be set on the WIMP-neutron (WIMP-proton) cross section of σ_{n}=1.6×10^{-41} cm^{2} (σ_{p}=5×10^{-40} cm^{2}) at 35 GeV c^{-2}, almost a sixfold improvement over the previous LUX spin-dependent results. The spin-dependent WIMP-neutron limit is the most sensitive constraint to date.
We estimate the amount of Ar37 produced in natural xenon via cosmic-ray-induced spallation, an inevitable consequence of the transportation and storage of xenon on the Earth’s surface. We then ...calculate the resulting Ar37 concentration in a 10-tonne payload (similar to that of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment) assuming a representative schedule of xenon purification, storage, and delivery to the underground facility. Using the spallation model by Silberberg and Tsao, the sea-level production rate of Ar37 in natural xenon is estimated to be 0.024 atoms/kg/day. Assuming the xenon is successively purified to remove radioactive contaminants in 1-tonne batches at a rate of 1 tonne/month, the average Ar37 activity after 10 tons are purified and transported underground is 0.058-0.090 μBq/kg, depending on the degree of argon removal during above-ground purification. Such cosmogenic Ar37 will appear as a noticeable background in the early science data, while decaying with a 35-day half-life. This newly noticed production mechanism of Ar37 should be considered when planning for future liquid-xenon-based experiments.
Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential component in the treatment of many pediatric malignancies. Thoracic RT may expose the heart to radiation dose and thereby increase the risk of late cardiac ...disease. This comprehensive review from the Pediatric Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic (PENTEC) initiative focused on late cardiac disease in survivors of childhood cancer treated with RT.
This systematic review was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology. We identified 1496 articles; 4 were included for dose-response modeling between mean cardiac radiation dose and risk of late coronary artery disease, heart failure (HF), valvular disease, and any cardiac disease.
For each 10-Gy increase in corrected mean cardiac radiation dose in 1.8- to 2.0-Gy fractions, we estimated a hazard ratio of 2.01 (95% confidence interval CI, 1.79-2.25) for coronary artery disease, of 1.87 (95% CI, 1.70-2.06) for HF, of 1.87 (95% CI, 1.78-1.96) for valvular disease, and of 1.88 (95% CI, 1.75-2.03) for any cardiac disease. From the same model, for each 100-mg/m
increase in cumulative anthracycline dose, the hazard ratio for the development of HF was 1.93 (95% CI, 1.58-2.36), equivalent to an increase in mean heart dose of approximately 10.5 Gy. Other nontreatment factors were inconsistently reported in the analyzed articles.
Radiation dose to the heart increases the risk of late cardiac disease, but survivors of childhood cancer who receive a mean dose <10 Gy at standard fractionation are at low absolute risk (<∼2% approximately 30 years after exposure) of late cardiac disease in the absence of anthracycline exposure. Minimizing cardiac radiation dose is especially relevant in children receiving anthracyclines. When cardiac sparing is not possible, we recommend prioritizing target coverage. It is likely that individual cardiac substructure doses will be a better predictor of specific cardiac diseases than mean dose, and we urge the pediatric oncology community to further study these relationships.
Fas ligand (FasL) gene therapy for cancer has shown promise in rodents; however, its efficacy in higher mammals remains unknown. Here, we used intratumoral FasL gene therapy delivered in an ...adenovirus vector (Ad-FasL) as neoadjuvant to standard of care in 56 dogs with osteosarcoma. Tumors from treated dogs had greater inflammation, necrosis, apoptosis, and fibrosis at day 10 (amputation) compared to pretreatment biopsies or to tumors from dogs that did not receive Ad-FasL. Survival improvement was apparent in dogs with inflammation or lymphocyte-infiltration scores >1 (in a 3-point scale), as well as in dogs that had apoptosis scores in the top 50th percentile (determined by cleaved caspase-3). Survival was no different than that expected from standard of care alone in dogs with inflammation scores ≤1 or apoptosis scores in the bottom 50th percentile. Reduced Fas expression by tumor cells was associated with prognostically advantageous inflammation, and this was seen only in dogs that received Ad-FasL. Together, the data suggest that Ad-FasL gene therapy improves survival in a subset of large animals with naturally occurring tumors, and that at least in some tumor types like osteosarcoma, it is most effective when tumor cells fail to express Fas.
Background
Limited data exist on the prevalence and distribution of sedentary behavior (SB) in multiple sclerosis (MS).
Objective
The objective of this paper is to describe sitting time as a metric ...of SB in a large national sample of people with MS.
Methods
A total of 8004 individuals from the North American Research Committee on MS (NARCOMS) Registry completed the sitting time question from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire in spring 2015. We present descriptive data on sitting time for the total sample and across sociodemographic, clinical, and behavioral characteristics.
Results
The final sample included 6483 individuals. Of these, 36.7% were classified with mild disability, 24.7% with moderate disability, and 38.6% with severe disability. Median sitting time for the total sample was 480 min/day (P25 = 310 min/day, P75 = 720 min/day). Sitting time was highest for individuals with MS who were male (540 min/day), not married (540 min/day), had a disease duration >30 years (540 min/day), were underweight (540.5 min/day), had an annual income of < $15,000 (585 min/day), presented with a progressive form of MS (600 min/day), were classified as insufficiently active (600 min/day), or presented with severe disability (661 min/day).
Conclusion
Sitting time is twice as high in individuals with MS compared to the general population (240 min/day).
The LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter search aims to achieve a sensitivity to the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross-section down to (1–2)×10−12 pb at a WIMP mass of 40 GeV/c2. This paper describes the ...simulations framework that, along with radioactivity measurements, was used to support this projection, and also to provide mock data for validating reconstruction and analysis software. Of particular note are the event generators, which allow us to model the background radiation, and the detector response physics used in the production of raw signals, which can be converted into digitized waveforms similar to data from the operational detector. Inclusion of the detector response allows us to process simulated data using the same analysis routines as developed to process the experimental data.
The first searches for axions and axionlike particles with the Large Underground Xenon experiment are presented. Under the assumption of an axioelectric interaction in xenon, the coupling constant ...between axions and electrons g_{Ae} is tested using data collected in 2013 with an exposure totaling 95 live days ×118 kg. A double-sided, profile likelihood ratio statistic test excludes g_{Ae} larger than 3.5×10^{-12} (90% C.L.) for solar axions. Assuming the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky theoretical description, the upper limit in coupling corresponds to an upper limit on axion mass of 0.12 eV/c^{2}, while for the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zhakharov description masses above 36.6 eV/c^{2} are excluded. For galactic axionlike particles, values of g_{Ae} larger than 4.2×10^{-13} are excluded for particle masses in the range 1-16 keV/c^{2}. These are the most stringent constraints to date for these interactions.
To assess practice effects, and intrarater and interrater reliability of the MS functional composite (MSFC) outcome measure.
To address the poor reliability and insensitivity to change of available ...MS clinical rating scales, the National MS Society's Clinical Outcomes Assessment Task Force developed the MSFC, a multidimensional quantitative clinical outcome measure that includes tests of leg function/ambulation (Timed 25-Foot Walk), arm function (Nine-Hole Peg Test), and cognitive function (Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test).
Ten patients with secondary progressive MS underwent six testing sessions over a 2-week period. The MSFC was administered by the same examining technician in the first five sessions and by the other technician in the sixth. Patients were reassessed by both technicians after 6 months (sessions 7 and 8). The MSFC score was calculated as the mean of the Z scores of the three components. A pooled dataset derived from secondary progressive MS patients in the placebo arms of previous clinical trials and natural history studies served as the reference population to standardize scores.
Practice effects were evident initially but stabilized by the fourth administration. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was 0.97 for the MSFC for session 4 versus session 5 (intrarater reliability). The ICC was 0.95 for session 5 versus session 6 (interrater reliability), and was 0.96 for session 7 versus session 8 when patients were reassessed 6 months later.
The MS functional composite (MSFC) outcome measure had excellent intrarater and interrater reliability when standardized procedures were used to train examining technicians and to assess patients. Prebaseline testing sessions should be included in clinical trials employing the MSFC to compensate for practice effects.
We present measurements of the electron-recoil (ER) response of the LUX dark matter detector based upon 170000 highly pure and spatially uniform tritium decays. We reconstruct the tritium energy ...spectrum using the combined energy model and find good agreement with expectations. We report the average charge and light yields of ER events in liquid xenon at 180 and 105V/cm and compare the results to the NEST model. We also measure the mean charge recombination fraction and its fluctuations, and we investigate the location and width of the LUX ER band. These results provide input to a reanalysis of the LUX run 3 weakly interacting massive particle search.
