In this paper we present a new adaptive two-stage algorithm for solving elliptic partial differential equations via a radial basis function collocation method. Our adaptive meshless scheme is based ...at first on the use of a leave-one-out cross validation technique, and then on a residual subsampling method. Each of phases is characterized by different error indicators and refinement strategies. The combination of these computational approaches allows us to detect the areas that need to be refined, also including the chance to further add or remove adaptively any points. The resulting algorithm turns out to be flexible and effective through a good interaction between error indicators and refinement procedures. Several numerical experiments support our study by illustrating the performance of our two-stage scheme. Finally, the latter is also compared with an efficient adaptive finite element method.
In this paper we consider the problem of finding an optimal value of the shape parameter in radial basis function interpolation. In particular, we propose the use of a leave-one-out cross validation ...(LOOCV) technique combined with univariate global optimization methods, which involve strategies of global optimization with pessimistic improvement (GOPI) and global optimization with optimistic improvement (GOOI). This choice is carried out to overcome serious issues of commonly used optimization routines that sometimes result in shape parameter values are not globally optimal. New locally-biased versions of geometric and information Lipschitz global optimization algorithms are presented. Numerical experiments and applications to real-world problems show a promising performance and efficacy of the new algorithms, called LOOCV-GOPI and LOOCV-GOOI, in comparison with their direct competitors.
Abstract
We consider theoretically a network of evanescently coupled optical microcavities to implement a space-multiplexed optical neural network in an integrated nanophotonic circuit. Nonlinear ...photonic network integrations based on evanescent coupling ensure a highly dense integration, reducing the chip footprint by several orders of magnitude compared to commonly used designs based on long waveguide connections while allowing the processing of optical signals with bandwidth in a practical range. Different nonlinear effects inherent to such microcavities are studied for realizing an all-optical autonomous computing substrate based on the reservoir computing concept, and their contribution to computing performance is demonstrated. We provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of basic microcavity parameters on the computational metrics of the system, namely, the dimensionality and the consistency. Importantly, we find that differences between frequencies and bandwidths of supermodes formed by the evanescent coupling are the determining factor of the reservoir’s dimensionality and scalability. The network’s dimensionality can be improved with frequency-shifting nonlinear effects such as the Kerr effect, while two-photon absorption has the opposite effect. Finally, we demonstrate in simulation that the proposed reservoir is capable of solving the Mackey–Glass prediction and the optical signal recovery tasks at gigahertz timescale.

Batch dark fermentation tests were performed on sheep cheese whey without inoculum addition at different operating pHs, relating the type and production yields of the observed gaseous and liquid by-products to the evolution of fermentation. Cheese whey fermentation evolved over time in two steps, involving an initial conversion of carbohydrates to lactic acid, followed by the degradation of this to soluble and gaseous products including short-chain fatty acids (mainly acetic, butyric and propionic acids) and hydrogen. The operating pH affected the production kinetics and yields, as well as the fermentation pathways. By varying the duration of the fermentation process, different cheese whey exploitation strategies may be applied and oriented to the main production of lactic acid, hydrogen or other organic acids.
In this paper we propose a new efficient interpolation tool, extremely suitable for large scattered data sets. The partition of unity method is used and performed by blending Radial Basis Functions ...(RBFs) as local approximants and using locally supported weight functions. In particular we present a new space-partitioning data structure based on a partition of the underlying generic domain in blocks. This approach allows us to examine only a reduced number of blocks in the search process of the nearest neighbour points, leading to an optimized searching routine. Complexity analysis and numerical experiments in two- and three-dimensional interpolation support our findings. Some applications to geometric modelling are also considered. Moreover, the associated software package written in Matlab is here discussed and made available to the scientific community.

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are classified into long and short events. Long GRBs (LGRBs) are associated with the end states of very massive stars, while short GRBs (SGRBs) are linked to the ...merger of compact objects. GRB 200826A was a peculiar event, because by definition it was an SGRB, with a rest-frame duration of ∼0.5 s. However, this event was energetic and soft, which is consistent with LGRBs. The relatively low redshift (
z
= 0.7486) motivated a comprehensive, multiwavelength follow-up campaign to characterize its host, search for a possible associated supernova (SN), and thus understand the origin of this burst. To this aim we obtained a combination of deep near-infrared (NIR) and optical imaging together with spectroscopy. Our analysis reveals an optical and NIR bump in the light curve whose luminosity and evolution are in agreement with several SNe associated to LGRBs. ). We conclude that GRB 200826A is a typical collapsar event in the low tail of the duration distribution of LGRBs. These findings support theoretical predictions that events produced by collapsars can be as short as 0.5 s in the host frame and further confirm that duration alone is not an efficient discriminator for the progenitor class of a GRB.
ABSTRACT
We report observations and analysis of the nearby gamma-ray burst GRB 161219B (redshift z = 0.1475) and the associated Type Ic supernova (SN) 2016jca. GRB 161219B had an isotropic gamma-ray ...energy of ∼1.6 × 1050 erg. Its afterglow is likely refreshed at an epoch preceding the first photometric points (0.6 d), which slows down the decay rates. Combined analysis of the SN light curve and multiwavelength observations of the afterglow suggest that the GRB jet was broad during the afterglow phase (full opening angle ∼42° ± 3°). Our spectral series shows broad absorption lines typical of GRB supernovae (SNe), which testify to the presence of material with velocities up to ∼0.25c. The spectrum at 3.73 d allows for the very early identification of an SN associated with a GRB. Reproducing it requires a large photospheric velocity ($35\, 000 \pm 7000$ km s−1). The kinetic energy of the SN is estimated through models to be Ekin≈4 × 1052 erg in spherical symmetry. The ejected mass in the explosion was Mej≈6.5 ± 1.5 M⊙, much less than that of other GRB-SNe, demonstrating diversity among these events. The total amount of 56Ni in the explosion was 0.27 ± 0.05 M⊙. The observed spectra require the presence of freshly synthesized 56Ni at the highest velocities, at least three times more than a standard GRB-SN. We also find evidence for a decreasing 56Ni abundance as a function of decreasing velocity. This suggests that SN 2016jca was a highly aspherical explosion viewed close to on-axis, powered by a compact remnant. Applying a typical correction for asymmetry, the energy of SN 2016jca was ∼(1–3) × 1052 erg, confirming that most of the energy produced by GRB-SNe goes into the kinetic energy of the SN ejecta.
Introduction
Many forms of mental disorders, especially psychotic disorders are characterized also by a worsening of sexual functioning. Sexual dysfunction has been shown to significantly correlate ...with a longer duration of untreated psychosis and with heavier psychotic symptomatology.
Objectives
The aim of this study is to validate the Italian version of the Arizona Sexual Experience (ASEX), a very handy and reliable tool to assess sexual dysfunction, in a population of people suffering from psychotic spectrum disorders.
Methods
Seventy-three psychiatric patients were recruited and assessed for mental illness and sexual functioning. We administered the Italian version of ASEX, adequately translated by two expert bilinguals. After 15 days we administered once again the test for test-retest reliability.
Results
Validation of ASEX revealed Cronbach’s coefficients >0.70 in both single items as in the total score. In addition, the test-retest reliability revealed Pearson’s coefficients >0.50 in the various domains. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed good fit indexes for the two factors model of ASEX (SRMR=0.54; CFI=0.974; RMSEA=0.135).
Conclusions
This study represents the first validation in the Italian psychiatric context of a very useful specific tool for the sexual assessment in people suffering from mental illness. Our analysis revealed good psychometric characteristics in terms of confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability.

Factors tuning the functional performances of the various TiO2-based materials in the wide range of their possible applications are poorly understood. Here the electronic structure of TiO2-based ...materials characterized by Ti3+ self-doping, obtained by a sol–gel route wholly performed in air at room temperature, is reported. In the amorphous hybrid TiO2–acetylacetonate (HSGT) material the formation of the Ti(iv)–acac complex makes it photoresponsive to visible light and allows us to obtain by means of a simple annealing in air at 400 °C a very stable black Ti3+ self-doped anatase TiO2 nanomaterial (HSGT-400), characterized by an extraordinary high concentration of Ti atoms with oxidation states lower than IV (about 26%), which absorbs light in the entire visible range. The very high stability of HSGT-400 is mainly related to the process, which does not require the use of harsh conditions nor external reducing agents. The electronic structure of HSGT, owing to the presence of the Ti(iv)–acac complex, allows the stabilization of superoxide anion radicals on its surface for a very long time (months) at room temperature. The extraordinary low recombination rate of electron–hole pairs gives to HSGT unusual catalytic performances at room temperature allowing the complete removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol from water in about one hour without any light irradiation. Our results clearly highlight the connection among the production process of TiO2-based materials, their electronic structure and, finally, their functional behaviour.
Over the last years the zebrafish imposed itself as a powerful model to study skeletal diseases, but a limit to its use is the poor characterization of collagen type I, the most abundant protein in ...bone and skin. In tetrapods collagen type I is a trimer mainly composed of two α1 chains and one α2 chain, encoded by COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes, respectively. In contrast, in zebrafish three type I collagen genes exist, col1a1a, col1a1b and col1a2 coding for α1(I), α3(I) and α2(I) chains. During embryonic and larval development the three collagen type I genes showed a similar spatio-temporal expression pattern, indicating their co-regulation and interdependence at these stages. In both embryonic and adult tissues, the presence of the three α(I) chains was demonstrated, although in embryos α1(I) was present in two distinct glycosylated states, suggesting a developmental-specific collagen composition. Even though in adult bone, skin and scales equal amounts of α1(I), α3(I) and α2(I) chains are present, the presented data suggest a tissue-specific stoichiometry and/or post-translational modification status for collagen type I. In conclusion, this data will be useful to properly interpret results and insights gained from zebrafish models of skeletal diseases.
