Objectives
To quantitatively and qualitatively assess the characteristics of YouTube videos dealing with Sjögren's syndrome.
Materials & Methods
A comprehensive electronic search was performed for ...‘Sjögren's syndrome' in YouTube. After excluding duplicates, irrelevant videos, and non‐English‐language domains, 70 videos were included for analysis. Videos were classified as useful, misleading, or personal experience. The overall quality of videos was scored according to the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Useful videos were assessed for reliability and comprehensiveness based on two 5‐point scales. Key points of the misleading videos were explored and patients' personal experiences were further investigated.
Results
Thirty‐six videos (51.4%) were classified as useful, 6 (8.6%) as misleading, and 28 (40%) as patient's personal experience. Independent users tend to upload videos with personal experience, while university channels/professional organizations share useful videos with evidence‐based information. Significant difference was observed in GQS among useful, misleading videos, and patient's experiences. The mean reliability, comprehensiveness, and GQS scores of useful videos were 2.5 (s.d.:1.2), 2.6 (s.d.:1.4), and 3.4 (s.d.:1.0), respectively, whereas only six videos (16.7%) were rated as complete vis‐à‐vis content. The most frequently misleading topics were etiology and treatment.
Conclusions
Specialists should refer their patients to validated e‐information resources and actively participate in the development of video‐sharing platforms.
Background: Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience symptoms of various mental disorders along with the characteristics that define ASD. High rates of several ...psychiatric disorders have been reported in people with ASD such as anxiety, depression, cognitive problems, emotional regulation difficulties and related behavioral problems can occur in children of all ages with ASD. There are many treatment programs that can help autistic persons cope with these symptoms. Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and more are treatment programs that can help people with autism recognize and manage their symptoms.
Aim: This paper examines through bibliographic sources of the last 15 years the possible mental disorders that a child or adolescent with ASD may experience, as well as the therapeutic interventions that can help to manage them.
Methodology: For the present bibliographic research, 15 scientific articles from English journals were used. The databases from which the scientific articles were found were PubMed, PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar.
Results: According to the results of various studies, children and adolescents with autism show various symptoms of psychological disorders such as Anxiety Disorders, Depression and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The combination of CBT and ICT can help people with autism recognize and manage their symptoms.
Discussion: The various symptoms of disorders that children and adolescents with autism experience can have a major impact on their family, their daily life, their schooling, and their future work. It is of the utmost importance that these children enter into a treatment program in order to better manage and treat their symptoms. The support of the school is also very important.
Objectives
To identify the most discussed dental articles on the Web and to assess the association between the intensity of online attention, publication characteristics, and citations.
Materials and ...methods
An Altmetric Explorer search was conducted for articles published in the 91 dental journals included in 2015 InCites™ Journal Citation Report® and mentioned online at all times. The 100 articles with the highest online attention, as measured by the “Altmetric Attention Score” (AAS), were screened for journal title, quartile of impact factor distribution (Q1–Q4), publication date, origin and affiliation of first author, article topic, type, and access. Citation counts were harvested from Scopus.
Results
The top 100 articles presented a median AAS of 119 and were mostly discussed on news outlets, Twitter, and Mendeley. Forty‐one articles were published in Q1 journals, 24 in Q2 journals, 32 in Q3 journals, and three in Q4 journals. AAS was significantly higher in articles of Q2 journals (median AAS = 398, range = 70–513) than in articles of Q1. A weak reverse correlation existed between AAS and time since publication (r = −.25, p < .05). No correlation was detected between AAS and other publication characteristics or number of citations.
Conclusions
Increased social impact of dental articles is not significantly associated with high citation rates.
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) deal with impairments in functional living skills. Video-based instruction (VBI) has been used for teaching and enhancing functional living skills for ...adolescents and young adults with ASD. This literature review of 19 relevant reports investigates various different types of VBI used in the studies. It explores the utilization and efficacy of VBI in enhancing the functional living capabilities of adolescents and young adults with ASD. Social skills were taught in most of the included studies. Only two studies focused on workplace social skills, three on vocational skills, and one on academic skills. The findings demonstrate that video modeling (VM) alone or in conjunction with other methods or strategies, is the method most often used in enhancement of functional living skills in adolescents and young adults with ASD.
Background: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) form a heterogeneous group, posing a challenge for clinical definition. Additional problems regarding the diverse clinical presentation ...arise from changes in diagnostic criteria according to the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), with exclusion of individuals who met earlier criteria or inclusion of more than previously.
Objectives: To investigate studies that have attempted to reduce the heterogeneity of ASD based on cluster analysis of phenotypic data and to clarify whether ASD should be interpreted as 'a unitary spectrum,' with a severity gradient, or defined by distinct subtypes. This will allow better understanding of the disorder with implications for its treatment and prognosis.
Methods: A literature search was made through PubMed, Researchgate and Google Scholar for studies of ASD populations. In addition, reference lists from identified studies were reviewed.
Results: Only 10 studies were found that dealt with the heterogeneity of ASD and its different subtypes, based on the review prerequisites. Most of the studies appear to support the existence of subtypes within ASD, but it remains unclear whether these are considered as different specific subtypes with characteristic profiles of symptoms or as a part of a severity gradient across symptom domains.
Conclusions: Drawing definitive conclusions from the published studies about the nature of ASD is difficult, due to the fundamental methodological differences among the studies and their inconsistent findings. This review shed light on a number of discrepancies regarding the current classification of ASD. However, future research will be necessary to provide a more definite answer on the question of a definition based on separate diagnostic subtypes or on a severity gradient by including larger samples that are followed longitudinal and by applying better diagnostic system and choosing the appropriate variables.
The aim of this systematic review was to compare patient-reported outcomes after harvesting calvarial or anterior iliac crest bone grafts to repair severe jaw defects and enable implant placement. ...The MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases, and OpenGrey were searched for studies on patient satisfaction, pain, disturbances in daily functioning, sensory alterations, donor site aesthetics, and complication rates. Of the 1946 articles identified, 43 reporting 40 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria; the studies were one randomized controlled clinical trial, one retrospective controlled clinical trial, and 23 prospective and 15 retrospective cohort studies. A meta-analysis of two studies (74 patients) showed no difference in satisfaction (mean difference (MD) − 0.13, 95% confidence interval (CI) − 1.17 to 0.92; P = 0.813) or postoperative pain (directly postoperative: MD −2.32, 95% CI −5.20 to 0.55, P = 0.113; late postoperative: MD −0.01, 95% CI −0.14 to 0.11, P = 0.825) between donor sites. However, the level of evidence is limited, due to the retrospective, non-randomized design of one study. Postoperative gait disturbances were highly prevalent among the anterior iliac crest patients (28–100% after 1 week). The incidence rates of sensory disturbances and other complications were low, and the donor site aesthetic outcomes were favourable for both graft types. To conclude, harvesting bone grafts from the calvarium or anterior iliac crest to augment the severely resorbed edentulous jaw results in similar patient satisfaction. However, the findings for postoperative pain and disturbances in daily living suggest a trend in favour of calvarial bone grafts if harvested using an adjusted technique.
It is not yet established whether additional orbicularis oculi muscle excision leads to better patient-reported aesthetic outcomes (PRO) compared to a skin-only resection blepharoplasty. A ...double-blind randomized controlled trial of upper blepharoplasty, with or without muscle excision, was performed on 54 White European patients who assessed the procedure via PRO. FACE-Q questionnaires covering eyes in general, upper eyelids, forehead and eyebrows, overall face, age appearance appraisal, age appraisal, social functioning, satisfaction with the outcome, and adverse effects were completed preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months after upper blepharoplasty. The Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale was used to assess scarring. The FACE-Q scores for skin-only and skin/muscle upper blepharoplasty were similar regarding the upper eyelids, forehead and eyebrows, overall face, patient perceived aging and age, social functioning, and satisfaction with the results, and also increased for both procedures with time. The FACE-Q score regarding the eyes in general was higher in the skin-only group at the 12-month follow-up. Scarring and adverse effects did not differ between the groups. Additional muscle resection does not seem to influence patient satisfaction. Thus, when performing an upper blepharoplasty, there is no need for additional muscle resection as a routine procedure to improve patient satisfaction.
Background: The debate and research over autism spectrum disorders (ASD) encounter a theoretical and interpretive impasse that reflects our inability to provide a coherent definition. This challenge ...is confirmed by the current description of the condition as a spectrum, and its management stretches the limits of the various relevant fields of knowledge and research, including medicine, psychology, language and communication, education, sociology, human rights, ethics and legal issues, philosophy.
Objectives: In the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to persons with physical disabilities, technology has been tool. In the case of ASD, however, although some lines of research are focused on the study of sensory defects, the cause appears to lie, not only in perception, but also in interpretation of stimuli from the outside world. Since we entered the “digital era”, the use of technology as an assistive tool in interpretation of the surrounding world appears to provide a borderline between our knowledge and the dark area of our ignorance. For tackling this, an interdisciplinary approach is required. Which kind of assistive technology (AT) should be employed in the case of ASD, which leads us to an encounter with the theoretical and institutional void that the stormy pace of the digital transformation and evolution has created.
Methods: Searching was through PubMed, National Institute of Health (NIH) publications, the official websites of European Union , Autism Europe, resources were found in the library of the University of Macedonia. Ninety eight papers were identified through the literature review in the period 2000-2021
Results: A features of postmodern society that is taking shape under the influence of the digital technology could be the crossing from the physical reality into the virtual realm. Another feature might be the reference to symbolic language that characterizes the various different fields of knowledge, together with their protocols and communication jargon. This entails the creation of hybrid knowledge which is expanding our physical world, and which makes possible intercommunication between isolated disciplinary fields. People with ASD feel more at ease when dealing with digital entities than in interaction with other people. Also individuals who are involved in the digital realm for long periods present characteristics similar to those of ASD. Could the creation of a virtual realm be possible, which would act as a common locus between the so-called normal and people with ASD.
Conclusion: We conducted a preliminary study to explore the possibility of an interdisciplinary research program with the participation of experts from the various fields involved in the many aspects of ASD.
Employment appears to be one of the greatest problems individuals with ASD have to deal with during their transition to adult life. In particular, unemployment or underemployment appears to be common ...among them, which suggests a gap in employment theory and practice focusing on the needs of this population. Tech-aided interventions appear to be promising since they can provide them opportunities to access competitive employment. The purpose of the current article is to examine the use of technology in interventions for adolescents and young adults with ASD in school, home, and community settings. In particular, it focused on the users of technology, the goals addressed, the type of technology employed, the contexts in which intervention practices were employed, and the outcomes for adolescents and young adults with ASD. In most of the studies, positive results were recorded and the importance of the work-related social skills was underlined. Technology appears to show potential for the enhancement of vocational skills of adolescents and young adults with ASD. Future research should focus on the improvement of work-related social skills and the skills needed for successful job seeking and an interview process. The maintenance and the generalization of the acquired skills should be examined too.
