We investigate the phenomenon of bipartite entanglement revivals under purely local operations in systems subject to local and independent classical noise sources. We explain this apparent paradox in ...the physical ensemble description of the system state by introducing the concept of “hidden” entanglement, which indicates the amount of entanglement that cannot be exploited due to the lack of classical information on the system. For this reason this part of entanglement can be recovered without the action of non-local operations or back-transfer process. For two noninteracting qubits under a low-frequency stochastic noise, we show that entanglement can be recovered by local pulses only. We also discuss how hidden entanglement may provide new insights about entanglement revivals in non-Markovian dynamics.
COVID-19 disease is one of the biggest public health challenges in Italy and global healthcare facilities, including radiotherapy departments, faced an unprecedented emergency. Cancer patients are at ...higher risk of COVID-19 infection because of their immunosuppressive state caused by both tumor itself and anticancer therapy adopted. In this setting, the radiation therapy clinical decision-making process has been partly reconsidered; thus, to reduce treatment duration and minimize infection risk during a pandemic, hypofractionated regimens have been revised. Moreover, telemedicine shows its helpfulness in the radiotherapy field, and patients get the supportive care they need minimizing their access to hospitals. This review aims to point out the importance of hypofractionated RT and telemedicine in cancer patient management in the COVID-19 era.
Background and aims: Myofibroblast-like cells, originating from activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC/MFs), play a key role in liver fibrosis, a potentially reversible process that may rely on ...induction of HSC/MFs apoptosis. While this possibility has been shown in cultured rat HSC, very limited data are currently available for human HSC/MFs. Methods: Cultured human HSC/MFs were exposed to several proapoptotic stimuli, including those known to induce apoptosis in rat HSC/MFs, and induction of cell death and related mechanisms were investigated using morphology, molecular biology, and biochemical techniques. Results: In this study we report that fully activated human HSC/MFs did not undergo spontaneous apoptosis and survived to prolonged serum deprivation, Fas activation, or exposure to nerve growth factor, tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α), oxidative stress mediators, doxorubicin, and etoposide. Induction of caspase dependent, mitochondria driven apoptosis in HSC/MFs was observed only when protein synthesis or transcription were inhibited. Importantly, the process of HSC activation was accompanied by changes in expression of a set of genes involved in apoptosis control. In particular, activated human HSC/MFs in culture overexpressed Bcl-2. The role of Bcl-2 was crucial as Bcl-2 silenced cells became susceptible to TNF-α induced apoptosis. Finally, Bcl-2 was markedly expressed in HSC/MFs present in liver tissue obtained from patients with hepatitis C virus related cirrhosis. Conclusions: Human activated HSC/MFs are resistant to most proapoptotic stimuli due to Bcl-2 overexpression and this feature may play a key role in the progression of fibrosis in chronic liver diseases.
We describe a new, state‐of‐the‐art, Earth System Regional Climate Model (RegCM‐ES), which includes the coupling between the atmosphere, ocean, and land surface, as well as a hydrological and ocean ...biogeochemistry model, with the capability of using a variety of physical parameterizations. The regional coupled model has been implemented and tested over some of the COordinated Regional climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) domains and more regional settings featuring climatically important coupled phenomena. Regional coupled ocean‐atmosphere models can be especially useful tools to provide information on the mechanisms of air‐sea interactions and feedbacks occurring at fine spatial and temporal scales. RegCM‐ES shows a good representation of precipitation and SST fields over the domains tested, as well as realistic simulations of coupled air‐sea processes and interactions. The RegCM‐ES model, which can be easily implemented over any regional domain of interest, is open source, making it suitable for usage by the broad scientific community.

The increasing availability of observational data sets of high temporal and spatial resolution is providing a more complete view of the ocean and atmosphere, revealing strong air‐sea coupling processes. In order to obtain an accurate representation and better understanding of the climate system, its variability, and possible future change, the inclusion of all mechanisms of interaction among the different climate components becomes ever more desirable. Regional coupled ocean‐atmosphere models can be especially useful tools to provide information on the mechanisms of air‐sea interactions and feedback occurring at regional fine spatial and temporal scales. °C). Fibres were stable under hydrolytic conditions and seemed to favour the entrance of water and then, the swelling and the hydrolysis of the starch (the most bio-available component). At higher fibre content, the composites become more hydrolytically stable probably due to the presence of a fibre–fibre physical network. Microbial attack in biotic aqueous medium was evidenced by the presence of a biofilm, especially on the fibre surface. In soil burial, PCL/S and 15%SF–PCL/S were degraded to about 50% of the initial mass. The weight loss pattern showed by the composite was associated with the presence of strong fibre–fibre and fibre–matrix interactions, which are absent in the neat matrix.
The prognosis of the oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients remains very poor, mainly due to their high propensity to invade and metastasize. In this perspective, we investigated E-cadherin gene (CDH1) promoter methylation status in OSCC and its correlation with Ecadherin protein expression, clinicopathological characteristics and patient outcome.
Histologically proven OSCC and paired normal mucosa were analyzed for CDH1 promoter methylation status and E-cadherin protein expression by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry. Colocalization of E-cadherin with epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) was evidenced by confocal microscopy and by immunoprecipitation analyses.
This study indicated E-cadherin protein down-regulation in OSCC associated with protein delocalization from membrane to cytoplasm. Low E-cadherin expression correlated to aggressive, poorly differentiated, high grade carcinomas and low patient survival. Moreover, protein down-regulation appeared to be due to E-cadherin mRNA downregulation and CDH1 promoter hypermethylation. In an in vitro model of OSCC the treatment with EGF caused internalization and co-localization of E-cadherin with EGFR and the addition of demethylating agents increased E-cadherin expression.
Low E-Cadherin expression is a negative prognostic factor of OSCC and is likely due to the hypermethylation of CDH1 promoter. The delocalization of E-cadherin from membrane to cytoplasm could be also due to the increased expression of EGFR in OSCC and the consequent increase of E-cadherin co-internalization with EGFR.
The National Palliative Care and Interventional Radiotherapy Study Groups of the Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO) carried out a survey whose aim was to obtain a ..."snapshot" of the real-world practice of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) treatments in Italy.
The survey was conducted on SurveyMonkey's online interface and was sent via e-mail to our society Radiation Oncologists.
Fifty-eight Italian radiation oncologists (ROs), representing 54 centers, answered the survey. Thirteen percent of the ROs declared they treat fewer than 10 NMSC lesions annually, 36% treat between 11 and 20, and 51% treat more than 20 lesions annually. Interventional radiotherapy (IRT) was offered by 25% of the ROs, and every case was reportedly discussed by a multidisciplinary team (71%). Electrons (74%), volumetric modulated arc therapy (V-MAT) (57%), three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) (43%), and IRT (26%) were the main treatment options. With external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), 46 and 53 different RT schedules were treated for curative and palliative intent, respectively; whereas for IRT, there were 21 and 7 for curative and palliative intent, respectively. The most popular EBRT curative options were 50–70.95/22–35 fractions (fx) and 50–70 Gy/16-20fx and for EBRT palliative settings, 30Gy/10fx, and 20–35Gy/5fx. For IRT, the most popular curative options were 32–50Gy/8-10fx and 30–54Gy/3-5fx, whereas 30Gy/6fz was the palliative option. Less than 10 re-RT cases were reported in one year in 42.5%, 11–20 cases in 42.5%, and >20 cases annually in 15%. Electrons (61%), VMAT (49%), and BRT (25%) were the most widely used approaches: 20–40Gy in 10fx and 20–25Gy in 5fx were the recommended fractionations.
The survey shows a variegated reality. A national registry with more detailed data could help in undercover its causes.

SARS-CoV-2 is a new Coronavirus identified as the cause of Coronavirus disease in 2019 (COVID-19). The epidemic spread in China and beyond its borders, involving 114 countries with more than 5 ...million dead. On March 11, the WHO declared the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to be a pandemic and encouraged nations to adopt harsh restrictive measures. Therefore, patients more and more often turn to dental offices only for emergencies. Healthcare professionals, including dentists, are at high infectious risk. In fact, the closeness to the oral cavity and nasopharynx and the use of drills or ultrasonic devices that cause aerosol release, make dental professions at high risk of bacterial and viral infections. The way patients are treated has changed. In fact, it should be mandatory to carry out a pre-treatment telephone triage and the use of mouthwashes to reduce bacterial load. In the current pandemic, it is necessary to adopt specific safety protocols that can protect dental operators as well as limit the spread of the virus. The purpose of this review is to present an overview on ways to reduce the risk of SARS-CoV-2 contagion in dentistry by focusing on the immediate situation as well as by looking towards the future.
To reach the review purpose, we selected a series of studies using keywords "COVID-19" OR "SARS-CoV-2" in association with "dentistry" AND "safety protocols" AND "healthcare procedures" AND "individual protection dispositive" AND "air transmission" AND "droplet". We selected papers exclusively in English language, up to 1st January 2022.
During future phases of the pandemic, everywhere in the World, it is necessary to impose all dentistry team both a serological screening and the vaccination, as already established for all health staff in Italy.
For own safety, it is an important for the whole dentistry category constantly update the devices and the protocols adopted, as well as monitoring the real infectious threats, which may occur.
