The recent development of core/shell engineering of rare earth doped luminescent nanoparticles has ushered a new era in fluorescence thermal biosensing, allowing for the performance of minimally ...invasive experiments, not only in living cells but also in more challenging small animal models. Here, the potential use of active-core/active-shell Nd3+- and Yb3+-doped nanoparticles as subcutaneous thermal probes has been evaluated. These temperature nanoprobes operate in the infrared transparency window of biological tissues, enabling deep temperature sensing into animal bodies thanks to the temperature dependence of their emission spectra that leads to a ratiometric temperature readout. The ability of active-core/active-shell Nd3+- and Yb3+-doped nanoparticles for unveiling fundamental tissue properties in in vivo conditions was demonstrated by subcutaneous thermal relaxation monitoring through the injected core/shell nanoparticles. The reported results evidence the potential of infrared luminescence nanothermometry as a diagnosis tool at the small animal level.

Thirty-nine older women (64.4 ± 4.5 years) were allocated into three groups: BFR0 = resistance exercise (20%, 1 maximum repetition MR) + 0% BFR; BFR60 = 20% 1 MR resistance exercise + 60% BFR; and BFR80 = 20% 1MR resistance exercise + 80% BFR.
A reduction of 14 mmHg (BFR60 group) and 13 mmHg (BRF80 group) was observed 48 hr after the first exercise session, while vagal modulation was increased in the BRF60 group after 24 and 48 hr.
A low-intensity resistance exercise session with 60% and 80% of BFR resulted in blood pressure (systolic, diastolic, and mean) reduction and positive changes on heart rate variability after 24 h of a RE session.
Sugarcane bagasse is a vast lignocellulosic byproduct generated in the industry with ~50% humidity (1 kg dry matter associated with 1 kg water). Although the presence of water brings deleterious ...consequences for combustion, storage and sugar extraction, the location of water in fresh bagasse remains unknown. In this work, we use synchrotron X-ray microtomography for non-invasive 3D imaging of fresh bagasse particles, which allows the visualization of intraparticle water. The sclerified fiber cells in the sheaths surrounding xylem vessels are often found full of water. We suggest this can be juice preserved from the native stalks as many sclerified fibers seem to keep their structural integrity despite the mechanical action during sugarcane crushing. The microtomograms of fresh bagasse also shows mineral particles adhered to biomass surfaces, with adhesion presumably favored by the presence of water. In summary, this work unveils the location of water in fresh bagasse, solving an old mystery of sugarcane technology.
Abstract
Thermal resolution (also referred to as temperature uncertainty) establishes the minimum discernible temperature change sensed by luminescent thermometers and is a key figure of merit to ...rank them. Much has been done to minimize its value via probe optimization and correction of readout artifacts, but little effort was put into a better exploitation of calibration datasets. In this context, this work aims at providing a new perspective on the definition of luminescence-based thermometric parameters using dimensionality reduction techniques that emerged in the last years. The application of linear (Principal Component Analysis) and non-linear (t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding) transformations to the calibration datasets obtained from rare-earth nanoparticles and semiconductor nanocrystals resulted in an improvement in thermal resolution compared to the more classical intensity-based and ratiometric approaches. This, in turn, enabled precise monitoring of temperature changes smaller than 0.1 °C. The methods here presented allow choosing superior thermometric parameters compared to the more classical ones, pushing the performance of luminescent thermometers close to the experimentally achievable limits.
This study aims to analyze the behaviour of cardiac autonomic modulation in adolescents with a family history of hypertension along with polymorphism of the ACE gene (rs1799752). The study involved ...141 adolescents, with a mean age of 14.89, divided into the following six groups: offspring of normotensive parents (ONP): DD, DI and II; and offspring of hypertensive parents (OHP): DD, DI and II. Blood pressure, body composition, family history of hypertension, sleep disorder, and sexual maturation were assessed for the groups' characterization. Afterwards, an electrocardiogram was performed, and oral mucosal cells were collected to analyze heart rate variability and genotypic research of angiotensin‐converting enzyme. The main finding of this study was the decrease of vagal action in group OHP (genotype DD) relative to group ONP (genotype II): LF (%), 54.25 ± 3.14 vs 39.33 ± 3.80; HF (%), 45.74 ± 3.14 vs 60.66 ± 3.80; LF/HF, 1.48 ± 0.23 vs 0.68 ± 0.19. The results also showed changes in the variable diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in OHP (genotype DI) to ONP (genotype II) groups: 72.99 ± 2.33 vs 63.27 ± 1.72; and OHP (genotype DI) to ONP (genotype DD) groups. Adolescents with genotype DD and a family history of arterial hypertension present chances in cardiac autonomic modulation, the cardiac parasympathetic modulation is lower in these adolescents in comparison to participants of ONP + II group.

This work explores a new class of vortex/magnetite/iron oxide nanoparticles designed for magnetic hyperthermia applications. These nanoparticles, named Vortex Iron oxide Particles (VIPs), are an ...alternative to the traditional Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs), since VIPs present superior heating power while fulfilling the main requirements for biomedical applications (low cytotoxicity and nonremanent state). In addition, the present work demonstrates that the synthesized VIPs also promote an internalization and aggregation of the particles inside the cell, resulting in a highly localized hyperthermia in the presence of an alternating magnetic field. Thereby, we demonstrate a new and efficient magnetic hyperthermia strategy in which a small, but well localized, concentration of VIPs can promote an intracellular hyperthermia process.

This investigation aimed to assess the efficacy of DNL in alleviating scopolamine-induced cognitive deficits in mice and its mechanisms.
We utilized the open-field test, novel object recognition test (NOR), and Morris water maze test (MWM) to assess the potential of DNL in ameliorating learning and memory dysfunction caused by scopolamine in mice. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was employed to measure Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) content and Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities in the brain, and oxidative stress-related factors in the serum, including Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH) content.
Scopolamine injection significantly reduced the discrimination index of mice in the NOR test and impaired their performance in the MWM test, as demonstrated by longer escape latency, fewer target crossings, and less time spent in the target quadrant in the MWM. After 25 days of administration, DNL increased the discrimination index of the scopolamine-treated mice in the NOR test. DNL reduced the escape latency in the MWM test in the model mice. DNL increased the target crossing number and the percentage of time spent in the target quadrant in the MWM test. ELISA experiments indicated that DNL decreased the AChE activities, increased the ChAT activities, and modulated oxidative stress makers (GSH, SOD, and MDA) in scopolamine-induced mice.
DNL may improve the learning and memory in mice treated with scopolamine, possibly by modulating oxidative stress and impaired cholinergic function.

Through deterministic data linkage of health registries, mRNA vaccine effectiveness (VE) against COVID-19-related hospitalisations and deaths was measured in 1,880,351 older adults. VE against ...hospitalisations was 94% (95% confidence interval (CI): 88–97) and 82% (95% CI: 72–89) for those 65–79 and ≥ 80 years old, with no evidence of waning 98 days after dose two. VE against mortality was 96% (95% CI: 92–98) and 81% (95% CI: 74–87) in these two age groups.
This paper evaluates the inflation forecasting models of a small open economy. We compare forecasts of Brazilian inflation (consumer price index—IPCA) based on the generalized autoregressive score ...(GAS) approach with the forecasts reported in the Focus Bulletin (the Brazilian Central Bank's weekly consensus survey report), as well as with other benchmark models. We selected a restricted number of the variables used most in the literature to compose the forecasting models. Furthermore, based on a confidence set, we applied a wide range of combination methods to the forecast components aiming at improving the forecasting power. Point and density forecast tests were performed to verify the performance of the models. The results showed that the GAS models had good predictive performance for the IPCA, and it was possible to improve their accuracy by combining them with other models.

Cryoglobulins are antibodies that precipitate at low temperatures and dissolve after rewarming. Cryoglobulinemia refers to the presence of circulating cryoglobulins and generally leads to a systemic ...inflammatory syndrome characterized by fatigue, arthralgia, purpura, ulcers, neuropathy and/or glomerulonephritis. The disease mainly involves small to medium-sized blood vessels and causes vasculitis due to cryoglobulin-containing immune complexes. Cryoglobulinemia is classified into three types (I, II and III) on the basis of immunoglobulin composition. Predisposing conditions include lymphoproliferative, autoimmune diseases and hepatitis C virus infection. The diagnosis of cryoglobulinemic syndrome is predominantly based on the presence of clinical features and laboratorial demonstration of serum cryoglobulins. The treatment strategy depends on the cause of cryoglobulinemia. For patients with chronic HCV infection, antiviral therapy is indicated. Immunosuppressive or immunomodulatory therapy, including steroids, plasmapheresis and cytotoxic agents, is reserved for organ-threatening manifestations. In this review, we discuss the main clinical presentations, diagnostic approach and treatment options.
