La forêt royale de Lercoul comporte une sapinière naturelle (non plantée) sur le versant nord-est du pic de la Bède. Ce toponyme vient du débès, défens en français, et témoigne d’un ancien statut de ...forêt protégée. De 1995 à 1998, nous y avions fouillé un atelier sidérurgique du iiie s. de n. è., dont les charbons de bois résiduels se composaient de hêtre à 95 %. In the field of lighting and daylighting, standard monitoring procedures to assess the overall performance of retrofit projects are scarce. Nevertheless the access to monitored data is crucial to ...assess whether daylighting or electric lighting systems deliver the expected performance in terms of cost-effectiveness and energy efficiency. In order to bridge this gap, a monitoring protocol is under development as part of the International Energy Agency – Solar Heating and Cooling Programme (IEA-SHC) Task 50 ‘Advanced Lighting Solutions for Retrofitting Buildings’. The protocol focuses on lighting and/or daylighting (façade or roof) retrofit in the non-residential building stock. It covers four key aspects: energy efficiency, costs, quality of the lighting environment and user satisfaction. The main features of this protocol are presented in this paper, along with some lessons learned from the ongoing application on selected case studies.

Abstract Falciparum malaria vaccine candidates have been developed using recombinant, replication-deficient serotype 5 and 35 adenoviruses (Ad5, Ad35) encoding the Plasmodium falciparum ...circumsporozoite surface protein (CSP) (Ad5.CS, Ad35.CS) (Crucell Holland BV, Leiden, The Netherlands). To evaluate the immunogenicity of these constructs, BALB/cJ mice were immunized twice with either Ad5.CS, Ad35.CS, empty Ad5-vector (eAd5), empty Ad35 vector (eAd35), or saline. Another group received the CSP-based RTS,S malaria vaccine formulated in the proprietary Adjuvant System AS01B (GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Rixensart, Belgium). Here we report that Ad5.CS, Ad35.CS, and RTS,S/AS01B, elicited both cellular and serologic CSP antigen-specific responses in mice. These adenoviral vectors induce strong malaria-specific immunity and warrant further evaluation.
This study was design to assess clinical agitation, electroencephalogram (EEG) and autonomic cardiovascular activity changes in children during induction of anesthesia with sevoflurane compared with ...halothane using noninvasive recording of EEG, heart rate, and finger blood pressure.
Children aged 2-12 yr premedicated with midazolam were randomly assigned to one of three induction techniques: 7% sevoflurane in 100% O2 (group SevoRAPID); 2%, 4%, 6%, and 7% sevoflurane in 100% O2 (group SevoINCR); or 1%, 2%, 3%, and 3.5% halothane in 50% N2O-50% O2 (group HaloN2O). An additional group of children who received 7% sevoflurane in 50% N2O-50% O2 (group SevoN2O) was enrolled after completion of the study. Induction was videotaped. EEG, heart rate, and finger blood pressure were continuously recorded during induction until 5 min after tracheal intubation and analyzed in frequency domain using spectral analysis.
Agitation was more frequent when anesthesia was induced with 100% O2 compared to the mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. No seizures were recorded in any group. In the four groups, induction of anesthesia was associated with an increase in EEG total spectral power and a shift toward the low-frequency bands. Sharp slow waves were present on EEG tracings of the three sevoflurane groups, whereas slow waves and fast rhythms (spindles) were observed in the halothane group. Sevoflurane induced a greater withdrawal of parasympathetic activity than halothane and a transient relative increase in sympathetic vascular tone at loss of eyelash reflex.
Agitation observed during sevoflurane induction was not associated with seizures. Sevoflurane induction induced a marked inhibition of parasympathetic control of heart rate.
Although low-energy and nearly zero-energy residential houses have been built in Sweden in the past decade, there are very few examples of low-energy office buildings. This paper investigates the ...design features affecting energy use in office buildings and suggests the optimal low-energy design from a Swedish perspective. Dynamic simulations have been carried out with IDA ICE 4 on a typical narrow office building with perimeter cell rooms. The results from the parametric study reveal that the most important design features for energy saving are demand-controlled ventilation as well as limited glazing on the façade. Further energy-saving features are efficient lighting and office equipment which strongly reduce user-related electricity and cooling energy. Together, the simulation results suggest that about 48% energy can be saved compared to a new office building built according to the Swedish building code. Thus, it is possible, using a combination of simple and well-known building technologies and configurations, to have very low energy use in new office buildings. If renewable energy sources, such as solar energy and wind power, are added, there is a potential for the annual energy production to exceed the annual energy consumption and a net zero-energy building can be reached. One aspect of the results concerns user-related electricity, which becomes a major energy post in very low-energy offices and which is rarely regulated in building codes today. This results not only in high electricity use, but also in large internal heat gains and unnecessary high cooling loads given the high latitude and cold climate.
Abstract We report the first safety and immunogenicity trial of the Plasmodium falciparum vaccine candidate FMP2.1/AS02A, a recombinant E. coli -expressed protein based upon the apical membrane ...antigen-1 (AMA-1) of the 3D7 clone formulated with the AS02A adjuvant. We conducted an open-label, staggered-start, dose-escalating Phase I trial in 23 malaria-naïve volunteers who received 8, 20 or 40 μg of FMP2.1 in a fixed volume of 0.5 mL of AS02A on a 0, 1, and 2 month schedule. Nineteen of 23 volunteers received all three scheduled immunizations. The most frequent solicited local and systemic adverse events associated with immunization were injection site pain (68%) and headache (29%). There were no significant laboratory abnormalities or vaccine-related serious adverse events. All volunteers seroconverted after second immunization as determined by ELISA. Immune sera recognized sporozoites and merozoites by immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and exhibited both growth inhibition and processing inhibition activity against homologous (3D7) asexual stage parasites. Post-immunization, peripheral blood mononuculear cells exhibited FMP2.1-specific lymphoproliferation and IFN-γ and IL-5 ELISPOT assay responses. This is the first PfAMA-1-based vaccine shown to elicit both potent humoral and cellular immunity in humans. Encouraged by the potential of FMP1/AS02A to target host immunity against PfAMA-1 that is known to be expressed by sporozoite, hepatic and erythrocytic stages, we have initiated field trials of FMP2.1/AS02A in an endemic population in the Republic of Mali.

The impact of seven shading devices on daylight quality in a south-oriented office was investigated by simulations with Radiance at three specific times on three sunny days. Daylight quality was ...assessed for a large number of desk positions by considering simple performance indicators: the absolute and relative work plane illuminance and the absolute and relative luminance of surfaces. The results indicated that the white awning, overhang and horizontal venetian blind provided adequate work plane illuminances for traditional office tasks but yielded high window luminances. The 45° venetian blind, white screen and blue awning provided suitable work plane illuminance for computer work and acceptable luminance ratios between the VDT, work plane and surroundings. The grey screen yielded unacceptably low illuminances and luminances, poor uniformity and unacceptable luminance ratios.
