The next generation magnetic spectrometer in space, AMS-100, is designed to have a geometrical acceptance of 100 m 2 sr and to be operated for at least ten years at the Sun–Earth Lagrange Point 2. ...Compared to existing experiments, it will improve the sensitivity for the observation of new phenomena in cosmic rays, and in particular in cosmic antimatter, by at least a factor of 1000. The magnet design is based on high temperature superconductor tapes, which allow the construction of a thin solenoid with a homogeneous magnetic field of 1 Tesla inside. The inner volume is instrumented with a silicon tracker reaching a maximum detectable rigidity of 100 TV and a calorimeter system that is 70 radiation lengths deep, equivalent to four nuclear interaction lengths, which extends the energy reach for cosmic-ray nuclei up to the PeV scale, i.e. beyond the cosmic-ray knee. Covering most of the sky continuously, AMS-100 will detect high-energy gamma-rays in the calorimeter system and by pair conversion in the thin solenoid, reconstructed with excellent angular resolution in the silicon tracker.
Aims
In patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE), right ventricular dysfunction at echocardiography is associated with increased in-hospital mortality. The aims of this study in patients with ...acute PE were to identify a sensitive and simple criterion for right ventricular dysfunction at multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) using echocardiography as the reference standard and to evaluate the predictive value of the identified MDCT criterion for in-hospital death or clinical deterioration.
Methods and results
Right ventricular dysfunction at MDCT was defined as the right-to-left ventricular dimensional ratio and was centrally assessed by a panel unaware of clinical and echocardiographic data. A right-to-left ventricular dimensional ratio ≥0.9 at MDCT had a 92% sensitivity for right ventricular dysfunction 95% confidence interval (CI) 88-96. Overall, 457 patients were included in the outcome study: 303 had right ventricular dysfunction at MDCT. In-hospital death or clinical deterioration occurred in 44 patients with and in 8 patients without right ventricular dysfunction at MDCT (14.5 vs. 5.2%; P< 0.004). The negative predictive value of right ventricular dysfunction for death due to PE was 100% (95% CI 98-100). Right ventricular dysfunction at MDCT was an independent predictor for in-hospital death or clinical deterioration in the overall population hazard ratio (HR) 3.5, 95% CI 1.6-7.7; P= 0.002 and in haemodynamically stable patients (HR 3.8, 95% CI 1.3-10.9; P= 0.007).
Conclusion
In patients with acute PE, MDCT might be used as a single procedure for diagnosis and risk stratification. Patients without right ventricular dysfunction at MDCT have a low risk of in-hospital adverse outcome.

PAN is a scientific instrument suitable for deep space and interplanetary missions. It can precisely measure and monitor the flux, composition, and direction of highly penetrating particles ...(>∼100 MeV/nucleon) in deep space, over at least one full solar cycle (11 years). The science program of PAN is multi- and cross-disciplinary, covering cosmic ray physics, solar physics, space weather and space travel. PAN will fill an observation gap of galactic cosmic rays in the GeV region, and provide precise information of the spectrum, composition and emission time of energetic particle originated from the Sun. The precise measurement and monitoring of the energetic particles is also a unique contribution to space weather studies. PAN will map the flux and composition of penetrating particles, which cannot be shielded effectively, precisely and continuously, providing valuable input for the assessment of the related health risk, and for the development of an adequate mitigation strategy. PAN has the potential to become a standard on-board instrument for deep space human travel.
PAN is based on the proven detection principle of a magnetic spectrometer, but with novel layout and detection concept. It will adopt advanced particle detection technologies and industrial processes optimized for deep space application. The device will require limited mass (20 kg) and power (20 W) budget. Dipole magnet sectors built from high field permanent magnet Halbach arrays, instrumented in a modular fashion with high resolution silicon strip detectors, allow to reach an energy resolution better than 10% for nuclei from H to Fe at 1 GeV/n. The charge of the particle, from 1 (proton) to 26 (Iron), can be determined by scintillating detectors and silicon strip detectors, with readout ASICs of large dynamic range. Silicon pixel detectors used in a low power setting will maintain the detection capabilities for even the strongest solar events. A fast scintillator with silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) readout will provide timing information to determine the entering direction of the particle, as well as a high rate particle counter. Low noise, low power and high density ASIC will be developed to satisfy the stringent requirement of the position resolution and the power consumption of the tracker.
Abstract Background and aims Lupin seed is referred to as an antidiabetic product in traditional medicine. Conglutin-γ, a lupin seed glycoprotein, was found to cause a significant plasma glucose ...reduction when orally administered to rats in glucose overload trials. Conglutin-γ was identified as being responsible for the claimed biological activity, and the aim of this work was to envisage its hypothetical insulin-mimetic cellular mechanism of action. Insulin is responsible for proteosynthesis control through IRS/AKT/P70S6k/PHAS1 pathways modulation, glucose homeostasis through PKC/Flotillin-2/caveolin-3/Cbl activation and muscle differentiation/hypertrophy via muscle-specific MHC gene transcription control. Methods and results To assess whether conglutin-γ modulates the same insulin-activated kinases, myoblastic C2C12 cells were incubated after 72 h of differentiation with 100 nM insulin or 0.5 mg/mL (∼10 μM) conglutin-γ. Metformin-stimulated cells were used as a positive control. The effect on the above mentioned pathways was evaluated after 5, 10, 20 and 30 min. In the control cells medium insulin, conglutin-γ and metformin were not added. We demonstrated that insulin or conglutin-γ cell stimulation resulted in the persistent activation of protein synthetic pathway kinases and increased glucose transport, glut4 translocation and muscle-specific gene transcription regulation. Conclusions Our results indicate that conglutin-γ may regulate muscle energy metabolism, protein synthesis and MHC gene transcription through the modulation of the same insulin signalling pathway, suggesting the potential therapeutic use of this natural legume protein in the treatment of diabetes and other insulin-resistant conditions, as well as the potential conglutin-γ influence on muscle cells differentiation and regulation of muscle growth.
Lupin flour is growingly being used in bakery products, mainly as a soybean protein substitute. The aim of the present work was to detect and quantify the presence of lupin flour in wheat-based foods ...using a newly set up qPCR system based on SYBR green. Although DNA sequence information for lupin is scarce, it has been possible to design a primer pair highly specific for the target gene and devoid of any primer-dimers amplification capacity. Lupin flour revealed to be a difficult matrix, since large amounts of compounds tend to co-purify with DNA, even adopting well established extraction protocols. Nonetheless, the primers used allowed to reach high PCR efficiencies and did not show any cross-reactivity with DNAs extracted from various plant and animal foods. The sensitivity achieved was 7
pg of lupin DNA, corresponding to a percentage of less than 0.1% of lupin flour in the foods.
Buckwheat is an old crop whose seeds are under-utilized. The protein composition of these seeds, however, makes them suitable as much needed ingredients for the production of gluten-free products. ...Several buckwheat species and local cultivars are known worldwide. In this work, 1D and 2D electrophoresis were used to characterize and compare the seed protein profiles of two buckwheat species (Fagopyrum esculentum and Fagopyrum tataricum). The two analyzed cultivars of F. esculentum represent authentic landraces of an Italian Alpine valley, named Valtellina. The protein profiles of F. tataricum and the two F. esculentum cultivars did not show major differences. However, narrow but significant differences were present between these two landraces, allowing their discrimination at protein level. This work represents a molecular-based approach to the designation of origin and authenticity of local buckwheat varieties and their tracing in flours for human food. Multimessenger astrophysics is based on the detection, with the highest possible accuracy, of the cosmic radiation. During the last 20 years, the advent space-borne magnetic spectrometers in space ...(AMS-01, Pamela, AMS-02), able to measure the charged cosmic radiation separating matter from antimatter, and to provide accurate measurement of the rarest components of Cosmic Rays (CRs) to the highest possible energies, have become possible, together with the ultra-precise measurement of ordinary CRs. These developments started the era of precision Cosmic Ray physics providing access to a rich program of high-energy astrophysics addressing fundamental questions like matter-antimatter asymmetry, indirect detection for Dark Matter and the detailed study of origin, acceleration and propagation of CRs and their interactions with the interstellar medium

In this paper we address the above-mentioned scientific questions, in the context of a second generation, large acceptance, superconducting magnetic spectrometer proposed as mission in the context of the European Space Agency’s Voyage2050 long-term plan: the Antimatter Large Acceptance Detector In Orbit (ALADInO) would extend by about two orders of magnitude in energy and flux sensitivity the separation between charged particles/anti-particles, making it uniquely suited for addressing and potentially solving some of the most puzzling issues of modern cosmology.
Given the good performances in terms of geometrical acceptance and energy resolution, calorimeters are the best suited detectors to measure high energy cosmic rays directly in space. However, in ...order to exploit this potential, the design of calorimeters must be carefully optimized to take into account all limitations related to space missions, due mainly to the mass of the experimental apparatus. CaloCube is a three years R&D project, approved and financed by INFN in 2014, aiming to optimize the design of a space-borne calorimeter by the use of a cubic, homogeneous and isotropic geometry. In order to maximize detector performances with respect to the total mass of the apparatus, comparative studies on different scintillating materials, different sizes of crystals and different spacings among them have been performed making use of Monte Carlo simulations. In parallel to this activity, several prototypes instrumented with CsI:Tl cubic crystals have been constructed and tested with particle beams (muons, electrons, protons and ions). Both simulations and prototypes showed that the CaloCube design leads to a good particle energy resolution (< 2% for electromagnetic showers, < 40% for hadronic showers) and a good effective geometric factor (> 3:5 m2 sr for electromagnetic showers, > 2:5 m2 sr for hadronic showers). Thanks to these performances, in 5 years of operation it would be possible to measure the ux of electrons+positrons up to some tens of TeV and the uxes of protons and nuclei up to some units of PeV/nucleon, hence extending these measurements by at least one order of magnitude in energy compared to the experiments currently operating in space.
