ABSTRACT
In this review of Noël Carroll's Arthur Danto's Philosophy of Art: Essays, I focus on the issue of Danto's philosophy of art history and Carroll's position that, unlike Danto, we ought to ...understand Danto's “end of art (history)” thesis as an orientational narrative (that is, a pragmatic‐instrumental narrative with cognitive purchase) rather than as a historical‐scientific narrative. In making this case, I show how Carroll's argument demonstrates that Danto's “end of art (history)” thesis is in tension with Danto's philosophy of history. Furthermore, I engage and respond to the most substantive critiques that Carroll proffers in this text, especially as they concern Danto's philosophy of art history and the related issue of Danto's (art) historically anchored search for a definition of art. In giving special attention to the socio‐historical background conditions (namely, “the artworld” conditions) for an object to be conferred art status, I also show how Carroll's incisive reading offers a critical rejoinder to claims made by recent critics such as Robert B. Pippin and Ivan Gaskell, who have dehistoricized Danto's definition of art, claiming that it allows for any artist to enfranchise any object as an artwork, proper.
This paper seeks to show how Kant’s epistemological conception of the transcendental faculties of cognition relates to his ontological conception of the transcendental distinction between ...mind-dependent, ideal appearances (viz., empirical objects) and mind-independent, transcendentally real things in themselves, as they relate to the self. I engage the metaphysical foundations of Kant’s account of self-consciousness and how this account relates to the self as an empirically perceivable and conceptualizable object of observation. This paper also connects Kant’s work in the Transcendental Deduction on the transcendental unity of apperception with Kant’s work on “clear” and “obscure” representations.
According to commentators like Rosalind Krauss, Briony Fer, Caroline Jones, and Michael Fried, Clement Greenberg's formalist/positivist device of "medium- specificity" debars errant affective ...aesthetic experiences that arc embodied; despite significant differences in how these theorists arrive at this conclusion, one shared point of emphasis is Greenberg's inheriting Kant's disinterested conception of pleasure in reflective judgments of beauty. Offering a textualist review of Kant's Analytic of the Beautiful, I seek to demonstrate that neither Greenberg, nor Greenberg's critics, arc correct in their account of Kant's judgments of beauty. (1) Specifically, I argue that Greenberg conflates Kant's conception of judgments of free beauty pulchritudo vaga) with merely adherent beauty (pulchritudo adhaerens). In formulating a rejoinder to Greenberg and the misplacement of Greenberg as a Kantian, and following Diarmuid Costello, I hope to save a path for a Kantian aesthetics of the present, much in the spirit of other broadly Kantian art historians and philosophers of art/aesthetics (e.g., Thierry de Duve, Paul Guyer, Ido Geiger, etc.). The disaster experiences of the past resulted in the need for a new international policy. The paper examines the transfer of the international policy for disaster risk reduction (DRR) into a local ...context, Turkey and Turkish, where new and old perspectives meet. Analyzed is a corpus consisting of two texts, with the purpose of examining the concepts’ actual use and contexts shaped by different attitudes, based on the three-dimensional framework of critical discourse analysis, translation studies and conceptual history. The concept transfer from international to the local level inevitably involves translation. The texts included “new” DRR terms as a result of the concealed translation attempts to adjust the old and contemporary terminologies. Thus, non-functional terms with blurred meanings arose. The awareness that such processes of transfer are complex would help to overcome this kind of simplistic top-down approaches and to give priority to “communicative labor.” The framework is not presented due to space limitations. It was also observed that the Turkish terminology lacks clear definitions. To affirm this, an in-depth analysis is needed. Terms transferred across contexts may end lacking conceptualizations due to non-functional translation choices. When adopting new social policies, this can be overcome through making effort for communication. This research looks at conceptual struggles related to social issues from a different aspect. The vague terms and inefficiencies in social implementations can be avoided by authorities being aware that discourse, translation and their production are parts of social action.
This paper looks at dialectical inferences as they relate to Hegel's modal metaphysics, closely examining the Actuality section of Hegel's Science of Logic and positing a reading of Hegel's modal ...actualism that engages with two strains of secondary commentary. Responding to commentators, we make the case that Hegel's 'das Logische' avoids presupposing possibility's being prior to actuality insofar as actuality and the derivation of possibility is considered as the in-itselfness of actuality, an implicit inner moment whereby actuality further determines itself. Actuality is immediate yet derived as an identity from the logic of inner and outer. If actuality as immediacy is explicit/outer, then its opposition, its implicitness/innerness, has to be possibility in the logic of modality. In order to conceive of actuality as existence, and particularly as an emerging process, we must already conceive the problem of presupposing an alien form within the logic of actuality.
