Insects of the order Hymenoptera have a defensive substance that contains many biologically active compounds. Specifically, venom from honeybees (
) contains many enzymes and peptides that are ...effective against various diseases. Different research papers stated the possibility of using bee venom (a direct bee sting or in an injectable form) in treating several complications; either in vivo or in vitro. Other reports used the active fractions of bee venom clinically or at labratory scale. Many reports and publications have stated that bee venom and its constituents have multiple biological activities including anti-microbial, anti-protozoan, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic properties. The present review aims to refer to the use of bee venom itself or its fractions in treating several diseases and counteracting drug toxicities as an alternative protocol of therapy. The updated molecular mechanisms of actions of bee venom and its components are discussed in light of the previous updated publications. The review also summarizes the potential of venom loaded on nanoparticles as a drug delivery vehicle and its molecular mechanisms. Finally, the products of bee venom available in markets are also demonstrated.
In the presented study, Bacillus subtilis strain AG4 isolated from marine was identified based on morphological, physiological, phylogenetic characteristics and an examination of 16S rRNA sequences. ...Novel exopolysaccharide (EPSR4) was extracted and isolated from the Bacillus subtilis strain as a major fraction of exopolysaccharide (EPS). The analysis of structural characterization indicated that EPSR4 is a β-glycosidic sulphated heteropolysaccharide (48.2%) with a molecular weight (Mw) of 1.48 × 104 g/mole and has no uronic acid. Analysis of monosaccharide content revealed that EPSR4 consists of glucose, rhamnose and arabinose monosaccharide in a molar ratio of 5:1:3, respectively. Morphological analysis revealed that EPSR4 possess a high crystallinity degree with a significant degree of porosity, and its aggregation and conformation in the lipid phase might have a significant impact on the bioactivity of EPSR4. The biological activity of EPSR4 was screened and evaluated by investigating its antioxidant, cytotoxicity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-Alzheimer activities. The antioxidant activity results showed that EPSR4 has 97.6% scavenging activity toward DPPH free radicals at 1500 µg/mL, with an IC50 value of 300 µg/mL, and 64.8% at 1500 µg/mL toward hydrogen peroxide free radicals (IC50 = 1500 µg/mL, 30 min). Furthermore, EPSR4 exhibited considerable inhibitory activity towards the proliferation of T-24 (bladder carcinoma), A-549 (lung cancer) and HepG-2 (hepatocellular carcinoma) cancer cell lines with IC50 of 244 µg/mL, 148 µg/mL and 123 µg/mL, respectively. An evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity revealed that EPSR4 has potent lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitory activity (IC50 of 54.3 µg/mL) and a considerable effect on membrane stabilization (IC50 = 112.2 ± 1.2 µg/mL), while it showed cyclooxygenase (COX2) inhibitory activity up to 125 µg/mL. Finally, EPSR4 showed considerable inhibitory activity towards acetylcholine esterase activity. Taken together, this study reveals that Bacillus subtilis strain AG4 could be considered as a potential natural source of novel EPS with potent biological activities that would be useful for the healthcare system.

The phytochemical, antidermatophytic, antioxidant, and nephroprotective properties of the aboveground parts of the traditional medicinal plant Solanum surattense were investigated. The methanolic extract alone had a higher concentration of phytochemicals than other extracts. The hole-plate diffusion method revealed that the methanolic extract had significant antidermatophytic activity against Trichophyton rubrum, Candida albicans, and Epidermophyton floccosum and comparable with nystatin. It also demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities comparable to standard antioxidants. Moreover, the methanolic extract demonstrated outstanding nephroprotection on the Human Embryonic Kidney (HEK 293) cell line when tested with cisplatin using the (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The increased concentration (500 g mL−1) of the crude methanolic extract effectively protected (95.31 %) the HEK 293 cells from cisplatin nephrotoxic activity, and it was comparable with rutin (98.5 %) drug. These findings suggested that the methanolic extract ingredients could be used for a variety of medicinal purposes.

Over the past few years, the research on the replacement of fossil fuel from inedible oil has been gaining more and more interest owing to the positive approach done on the waste animal fat for the reusable purpose. The performance, emission and combustion characteristics were measured for both diesel and chicken fat biodiesel blends (CFB). A small single cylinder, four stroke, air cooled, combustion ignition engine was used to conduct all tests. The biodiesel was produced by using transesterification process with the chicken eggshell dominated catalyst. The derived catalyst from the waste chicken eggshell was CaO used as a catalyst for the esterification process. The biodiesel blends used for conducting tests were B10 (10% of Chicken fat biooil + 90% diesel), B30 (30% of Chicken fat biooil + 70% diesel), B50 (50% of Chicken fat biooil + 50% diesel) and D100 or B0 (100% diesel). The Brake power (BP), Brake torque, Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT), Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) and emission of CO, CO2, NOx and HC for all fuel blends were calculated and compared with pure diesel B0. All tests were conducted at different engine speed as 1800 rpm, 2000 rpm, 2200 rpm, 2400 rpm and 2600 rpm. From the performance qualities results, the biodiesel blends increased the brake power, BTE, EGT and HRR while reduced the CO, HC and smoke emissions. However, there was a little increment in NOX emission. The CFB is helpful in both overcoming the shortage of fossil fuel and better waste management.
341 entries comprising of 250 genotypes/lines and 91 gene differentials were tested for leaf rust (Puccinia triticina Erik) in different ecological zones of Punjab during 2016-17 and 2017-18. Each ...entry was planted in a single 1 m long row and Morocco was used as a spreader. Data on leaf rust severity was recorded once in 3rd week of March during both study years at all locations by following Modified Cobb Scale while the data was recorded three times on 2nd, 22nd and 29th March during 2018 at Faisalabad location to study rust development pattern. The disease severity ranged from 0-100S during 2016-17 and from 0-80S during 2017-18. The genotype HYT 60-5 and the genes Lr-19, Lr-26 and Lr 27+31 showed no disease symptoms at any location during both the study years. These genes can be used for future breeding material development. Area under disease progressive curve (AUDPC), calculated on the basis of periodical readings from Faisalabad, ranged from 0-550 and the susceptible check Morocco has AUDPC value of 600. 120 entries including HYT 60-5 have disease progression 0, which showed that there may be a major gene based resistance in these entries. Area under disease progressive curve/Day (AUDPC/DAY) was calculated for the rest of 130 genotypes to have an understanding of the disease progression pattern and out of which 43 entries have AUDPC/Day value ranging from 1-2 and 28 entries have AUDPC/Day value ranging from 2-3 which revealed that these entries are very useful for use in breeding for durable rust resistance and can be utilized as a parent in back cross and top cross breeding schemes. Material with AUDPC value less than 10 is the best source of resistance against the leaf rust. Varieties/advanced lines, Ujala-16, V-14154, and V-14124 have shown slow rust development and are very good sources of resistance. Similarly, HYT 60-5 has proven an excellent source of resistance. The advance line V-14154 has been approved as a commercial cultivar by the name "Akbar-19".
The aim of this study is to investigate the radiation shielding properties of novel concrete samples with bulk Bi2O3 and Bi2O3 nanoparticles (Bi2O3 NP) incorporated into its composition. The mass ...attenuation coefficient of the concrete samples without Bi2O3 and with 5 and 7 wt% bulk Bi2O3 were experimentally determined and were compared against values obtained using the XCOM and Geant4 simulations. Both methods greatly agree with the experimental values. The linear attenuation coefficients (LAC) of blank concrete (C-0), concrete with 5% bulk Bi2O3 (C-B5), and concrete with 5% nanoparticle Bi2O3 (C-N5) were determined and compared at a wide energy range. We found that the LAC follows the trend of C-0 < C-B5 < C-N5 at all the tested energies. Since both C-B5 and C-N5 have a greater LAC than C-0, these results indicate that the addition of Bi2O3 improves the shielding ability of the concretes. In addition, we investigated the influence of nanoparticle Bi2O3 on the LAC of the concretes. The half-value layer (HVL) for the concretes with bulk Bi2O3 and Bi2O3 nanoparticles is also investigated. At all energies, the C-0 has the greatest HVL, while C-N15 has the least. Thus, C-N15 concrete is the most space efficient, while C-0 is the least space efficient. The radiation protection efficiency (RPE) of the prepared concretes was found to decrease with increasing energy for all five samples. For C-0, the RPE decreased from 63.3% at 0.060 MeV to 13.48% at 1.408 MeV, while for C-N15, the RPE decreased from 87.9 to 15.09% for the same respective energies. Additionally, C-N5 had a greater RPE than C-B5, this result demonstrates that Bi2O3 NP are more efficient at shielding radiation than bulk Bi2O3.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, responsible for over half a million deaths in 2020. Almost 75% of FDA-approved drugs are mainly nitrogen- and sulfur-containing heterocyclic ...compounds, implying the importance of such compounds in drug discovery. Among heterocycles, thiazole-based heterocyclic compounds have demonstrated a broad range of pharmacological activities. In the present study, a novel set of 1,3-thiazole derivatives was designed and synthesized based on the coupling of acetophenone derivatives, and phenacyl bromide was substituted as a key reaction step. The activity of synthesized compounds was screened against the proliferation of two breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231). Almost all compounds exhibited a considerable antiproliferative activity toward the breast cancer cells as compared to staurosporine, with no significant cytotoxicity toward the epithelial cells. Among the synthesized compounds, compound 4 exhibited the most potent antiproliferative activity, with an IC50 of 5.73 and 12.15 µM toward MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cells, respectively, compared to staurosporine (IC50 = 6.77 and 7.03 µM, respectively). Exploring the mechanistic insights responsible for the antiproliferative activity of compound 4 revealed that compound 4 possesses a significant inhibitory activity toward the vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) with (IC50 = 0.093 µM) compared to Sorafenib (IC50 = 0.059 µM). Further, compound 4 showed the ability to induce programmed cell death by triggering apoptosis and necrosis in MCF-7 cells and to induce cell cycle arrest on MCF-7 cells at the G1 stage while decreasing the cellular population in the G2/M phase. Finally, detailed in silico molecular docking studies affirmed that this class of compounds possesses a considerable binding affinity toward VEGFR2 proteins. Overall, these results indicate that compound 4 could be a promising lead compound for developing potent anti-breast cancer compounds.
The influence of modifier oxides (TiO2, ZnO, BaO, and PbO) on the mechanical and radiation shielding properties of boro-tellurate glasses is investigated. Samples with a composition of ...B2O3-SrO-TeO2-RO (RO represents the modifier oxides) were fabricated using the melt quench method, and their physical, mechanical, and radiation attenuation parameters were reported. For this aim, Monte Carlo simulation was employed to predict the radiation attenuation parameters, while the Makishima-Mackenzie model was adopted to determine the mechanical properties. The tightly packed structure with better cross-linkage density is possessed by the Ti-containing glass (SBT-Ti) system among the titled glass batch. The higher Poisson and micro-hardness values of the SBT-Ti glass indicate its structure’s reduced free volume and better compactness. For the glass with PbO, the linear and mass attenuation coefficients are highly increased compared to those glasses doped with TiO2, ZnO, and BaO. The thinner half-value layer was reported at 0.015 MeV, taking values 0.006, 0.005, 0.004, and 0.002 for samples with TiO2, ZnO, BaO, and PbO, respectively. SBT-Pb sample (with PbO) has a thinner HVL compared to other fabricated glass samples. The fabricated glasses’ thickness (Deq) equivalent to 1 cm of lead (Pb) was reported. The results demonstrated that Deq is high at low energy and equals 11.62, 8.81, 7.61, 4.56 cm for SBT-Ti, SBT-Zn, SBT-Ba, and SBT-Pb glass samples, respectively. According to the Deq results, the fabricated glasses have a shielding capacity between 30 and 43% compared to the pure Pb at gamma-ray energy of 1.5 MeV. At high energy (8 MeV), the transmission factor values for a thickness of 1 cm of the fabricated samples reach 88.68, 87.83, 85.95, and 83.11% for glasses SBT-Ti, SBT-Zn, SBT-Ba, and SBT-Pb, respectively.
Nanotechnology recently emerged among the most exciting science-related innovations. Nanotechnology-produced metal nanoparticles got a lot of attention. This is emerging as a rapidly developing field ...due to its effective applications that targeted the manufacturing of new materials at the nanoscale level. There is considerable interest in the application of nanomaterials in many areas of industry including agrifood and biomedical products. In the agrifood area, nanomaterials have benefits in diverse areas which include fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, sensors, and quality stimulants, among other food processing, food packaging, and nutraceuticals to improve nutritional value. These applications in agriculture result in enhanced quality and crop yield, reduction in pollution caused by various chemicals, etc. In the pharmaceutical area, nanomaterials are claimed to ameliorate drug safety and efficacy, as well as bioavailability. They are utilized for targeting various drugs to a specific location in the body. However, there are also concerns that some nanoparticles may have adverse effects on human health. These include titanium dioxide, copper oxides, and other nanomaterials which lead to liver damage, skin damage, lung damage, and various other human health-related problems. This review is aimed at presenting a briefing on the state of the art in the application of nanotechnology in food and human nutrition and drug administration, consumer attitudes, and their challenges and opportunities with future perspectives.
wood is made up of lignocellulosic material; this lignocellulosic material contains two types of biopolymers, i.e., carbohydrate and aromatic polymers. In this study, this lignocellulosic material ...was used to prepare biochar. Three biochar, i.e., laboratory-based (B1), barrel-based (B2), and brick kiln-biochar (B3), were used for fluoride and arsenic removal from aqueous solution. Barrel-based biochar was prepared by using the two-barrel method's alteration. The highest fluoride removal (99%) was attained at pH 2 in the presence of B1, while in the presence of B2 and B3, maximum fluoride removal was 90% and 45.7%, respectively. At pH 10, the maximum arsenic removal in the presence of B1, B2, and B3 was 96%, 94%, and 93%, respectively. The surface characteristics obtained by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the presence of carbonyl group (C-O), and alkene (C=C) functional groups on all the three studied biochars. Isotherm studies showed that the adsorption was monolayered (all the adsorbed molecules were in contact with the surface layer of the adsorbent) as the Langmuir isotherm model best fits the obtained data. Adsorption kinetics was also performed. The R
value supports the pseudo-second-order kinetics, which means that chemisorption was involved in adsorbing fluoride and arsenic. It is concluded that B1 gives maximum removal for both fluoride (99%) and arsenic (96%). The study shows that lignocellulose-based biochar can be used for arsenic and fluoride removal from water.
