The COMET experiment at J-PARC aims to search for a lepton-flavour violating process of muon to electron conversion in a muonic atom, μ-e conversion, with a branching-ratio sensitivity of better than ...10−16, 4 orders of magnitude better than the present limit, in order to explore the parameter region predicted by most of well-motivated theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. The need for such an excellent sensitivity places several stringent requirements on the detector; (i) good momentum resolution, <2%, for 100 MeV/c electron, which is primarily limited by multiple scattering effect for this momentum region, and (ii) high rate capability, up to 5×109μ−/s muon beam by J-PARC. In order fulfil such requirements, we decided to develop the straw-base planar tracker which is operational in vacuum and made of an extremely light material. The COMET straw tracker consists of 10 mm diameter straw tube, longer than 1 m length, with 20μm-thick Mylar foil and 70 nm-thick aluminium cathode.
Recently, two big milestones, detector-performance verification by the full-scale prototype with 100 MeV/c electron beam, and start the assembly of final straw tracker for COMET Phase-I, were achieved. In this article, details of these two big milestones are provided. In addition, some prospects on the straw tracker development towards the COMET Phase-II are also given.

The experiment requires to detect the monochromatic electron of 105MeV, the momentum resolution is primarily limited by the multiple scattering effect for this momentum region. Thus we need the very light material detector in order to achieve an excellent momentum resolution, better than 2%, for 100MeV region. In order to fulfil such a requirement, the thin-wall straw-tube planar tracker has been developed by an extremely light material which is operational in vacuum. The COMET straw tracker consists of 9.8mm diameter straw tube, longer than 1m length, with 20-μm-thick Mylar foil and 70-nm-thick aluminium deposition. Currently even thinner and smaller, 12μm thick and 5mm diameter, straw is under development by the ultrasonic welding technique.
A high statistics ∑p scattering experiment has been performed at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged ∑− beam running in a liquid hydrogen target ...were accumulated by detecting the π−p→K+∑− reaction with a high intensity π− beam of 20 M/spill. The number of the Σ− beam was about 1.7 × 107 in total. The ∑−ρ elastic scattering and the ∑−p → Λn inelastic scattering events were successfully observed with about 100 times larger statistics than that in past experiments.
In the J-PARC E27 experiment, we search for a
K
−
pp
bound state via the
d
(
π
+
,
K
+
) reaction at 1.7 GeV/
c
at the K1.8 beam line. The binding energy and decay width of the
K
−
pp
bound state can ...be obtained in the missing mass measurement with a good energy resolution of 2 MeV/
c
2
. A range counter array (RCA) was constructed to detect the two high-momentum protons from the
K
−
pp
decay and to reduce the background such as quasi-free hyperon production. Recently, we have carried out a pilot run in June, 2012. The
d
(
π
+
,
K
+
) missing-mass spectrum has been obtained for the first time. In this report, an overview of the E27 experiment and a preliminary result on this pilot run are presented.
Recent results and future directions of the γ-ray spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei are discussed. A further analysis of the last KEK experiment (E566) has revealed a new γ transition in 12ΛC at 6048 keV ...(preliminary), which is ascribed to the M1(13−→11−) transition. At J-PARC, studies will be extended from p-shell to s-shell and sd-shell hypernuclei. In the first part of the J-PARC E13 experiment, we will measure the 4ΛHe(1+→0+) transition to study charge-symmetry breaking in the ΛN interaction and investigate the 19ΛF hypernucleus to study ΛN spin–spin interaction further using one of the sd-shell hypernuclei. In the second part of E13, we will precisely measure the spin-flip B(M1) value for the 7ΛLi(3/2+→1/2+) transition. Beyond E13, we plan to study impurity effects by observing possible changes in nuclear deformation caused by the presence of a Λ in sd-shell hypernuclei, as well as to investigate various heavier Λ hypernuclei in order to precisely determine the energies of Λ single-particle orbits.
For the future linear collider calorimetry, fine-granularity is indispensable for energy measurements based on particle flow algorithm, which could achieve better energy resolution for jets than the ...conventional method. To explore the possibility for such a calorimeter using scintillator, an electromagnetic calorimeter test module, made of scintillator-strips and lead plates, was constructed and tested with test beams. Performance of the test module is presented in this article, in terms of the shower profile studies as well as energy and spatial measurements.
