By advancing the components of the polarized negative ion source the number of polarized particles for injection into the cyclotron injector of the cooler synchrotron COSY at the IKP of the ...Forschungszentrum Julich has been increased, since 2000, by a factor of three to 5.5X1012 H- ions, delivered in a 20 milliseconds pulse with a repetition rate of 2 seconds. This report sums up briefly the characteristics of the ion source in its present mode of operation and describes the achievements towards higher beam intensities as well as for providing polarized H- and D- beams with high reliability.

Rb were compared with the results of nuclear model calculations using the code TALYS, which combines the statistical, precompound, and direct interactions. In general, the experimental cross-section data as well as the isomeric cross-section ratios are reproduced well by the model calculations, provided the input model parameters are properly chosen and the level structure of the product nucleus is thoughtfully considered. The quality of the agreement between experimental data and model calculations was numerically quantified. For products formed via emission of a light complex particle as well as multi-nucleons (e.g.,
$$\alpha $$
α
and 2p2n), the contribution of the latter process starts increasing when its energy threshold is crossed.

The vector and tensor polarizations of a deuteron beam have been measured using elastic deuteron-carbon scattering at 75.6 MeV and deuteron-proton scattering at 270 MeV. After their acceleration to ...1170 MeV inside the COSY ring, the polarizations of the deuterons were checked by studying a variety of nuclear reactions using a cluster target at the ANKE magnet spectrometer placed at an internal target position of the storage ring. All these measurements were consistent with the absence of depolarization during acceleration and provide us with a number of secondary standards that can be used in subsequent experiments at the facility.
Excitation functions A(N)(p(p),Theta(c.m.)) of the analyzing power in pp--> elastic scattering have been measured with a polarized atomic hydrogen target for projectile momenta p(p) between 1000 and ...3300 MeV/ c. The experiment was performed for scattering angles 30 degrees </=Theta(c.m.)</=90 degrees using the recirculating beam of the proton storage ring COSY during acceleration. The resulting excitation functions and angular distributions of high internal consistency have significant impact on the recent phase shift solution SAID SP99, in particular, on the spin triplet phase shifts between 1000 and 1800 MeV, and demonstrate the limited predictive power of single-energy phase shift solutions at these energies.
The Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) has taken the leadership of a consortium to design and construct the HESR as part of the Facility for Antiproton an Ion Research (FAIR) project at the Gesellschaft ...fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in Germany. The HESR is a 50 Tm synchrotron/storage ring for antiprotons using superconducting magnet technology, where the development of a bent dipole magnet (cosine theta) with a radius of curvature of 13.9 m and a length of 3.3 m is the major task. On basis of the HERA cooling system the cryogenic design for the HESR has started. One key issue will be the design of several cold-warm transitions e.g. at PANDA, the E-Cooler and in the region of the stochastic beam cooling system. Another important development is the cryostat layout housing the superconducting curved magnets and in particular the alignment system and measurement equipment for the bent magnets. This paper will present an overview both of the cryogenic layout and the cryostat design. It will give a status report on the achievements so far and discuss the future plans.
We present new measurements of cumulative cross sections for the production of 139Ce and 149Tb by proton-induced spallation of tantalum foil targets at different proton energies between 300 and ...1700 MeV, using the COSY synchrotron at FZ Jülich. Those measurements are presented in the context of the production of medically-relevant radioisotopes for medical applications.
At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/Jülich spin-correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic ...beam target. We report results for A(NN), A(SS), and A(SL) for c.m. scattering angles between 30 degrees and 90 degrees. Our data on A(SS)--the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV--clearly disagrees with predictions of available pp scattering phase-shift solutions while A(NN) and A(SL) are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced.
