Benveniste's lectures had a shaping influence on a generation of scholars that includes Barthes, Deleuze, Foucault, Derrida, Kristeva and Todorov and here, for the first time, these are made ...available in English for a new generation of linguists and philosophers of language. This book includes the full course of fifteen lectures which Benveniste gave in the Collège de France on the rue des Écoles in Paris between December 1968 and December 1969. Benveniste's work as offered here presents the first serious attempt at reconciling the sign theories of Saussure and Peirce and draws together, language, writing and society into a comprehensive theory of signifying. Benveniste's philosophy of language considers key concepts such as utterance, enunciation, speaker, discourse, subjectivity and as such is central to the areas of discourse analysis, text linguistics, pragmatics, semantics, conversational analysis, stylistics and semiotics.
The experience of editing Benveniste’s Dernières leçons at the Collège de France, 1968-1969 (EHESS-Gallimard-Seuil, 2012), put into perspective with other achievements and projects, allows us to ...start examining the various problems posed by the edition of orally delivered courses whose sources happen to be diverse and sometimes highly instable: notes jotted down by the linguist and/or registered by the audience, published and filed documents about the same themes, notes of readings, etc. The diversity of issues and circumstances considered, is it possible to bring out some general methodological rules? This question underpins the content of the following article which presents, in passing, some unpublished texts by Émile Benveniste.
L’expérience de l’édition des Dernières leçons d’Émile Benveniste au Collège de France, 1968 et 1969 (EHESS-Gallimard-Seuil, 2012), mise en perspective avec d’autres réalisations et projets, permet d’engager une réflexion sur les divers problèmes que pose l’édition de cours proférés oralement dont les sources sont diverses et parfois très instables : notes du linguiste, notes d’auditeurs, documents publiés sur le même thème et archivés, notes de lecture, etc. Face à la diversité des questions et des situations, est-il possible de faire émerger quelques règles méthodologiques ? Cette interrogation sous-tend le présent article qui livre, au passage, quelques inédits d’Émile Benveniste.
Very little research has been devoted to the way in which the textual genetics approaches the manuscripts in the text processing. However the future of the genetics depends, partly, on the interest ...which one can carry to this new materiality of the manuscript. The notion of text, the concept of what text is, have they been changed, or at least modified by the use of text processing? To write a text is to elaborate a discourse in the form of an utterance and to record it. The order of the discourse, in other words, the semiotic (the linguistic recognizable) / semantic (the meaning expressed (uttered) in the discourse) ratio should in no way be modified by the use of text processing. What changes, on the other hand, it is the materialization of the paper support of the text and consequently the status of this materialization.
Dans la perspective d’Émile Benveniste, il sera difficile de s’en tenir aux termes de « représentation » et « opération ». Plus pertinente est la notion d’interprétance, qui, empruntée à Pierce, ...prend dans la théorie benvenistienne du langage une valeur à la fois fondatrice (de la fonction du langage dans la société, de l’instance énonciative dans les activités de langage) et épistémologique. Elle sert de pivot entre la langue saussurienne et le discours, elle soutient la dimension méta de toute analyse linguistique. Cette notion d’interprétance se décline, chez Benveniste en divers dispositifs conceptuels couplés : désigner/signifier, sémiotique/sémantique, personne/non personne, selon les instances de langage visitées.
It’s hard to comply with the terms of “representation” and “operation” in Emile Benveniste’s view; far more relevant is the notion of interpretance, borrowed from interpretant’s Peirce. In Benveniste’s theory of language, the notion of interpretance is given a value that is both foundational (i.e. founding the function of language in society, of the enunciative instance of the acts of speaking) and epistemological. It acts as a pivot between saussurean langue on one hand and speech (discours) on the other, supporting the meta dimension of any linguistic analysis. According to the different instances of language, Benveniste’s notion of interpretance is at play through various double conceptual devices: to refer to/to signify (désigner/signifier), semiotic/semantic (sémiotique/sémantique), grammatical person/non-person.

L’article se propose de continuer la discussion avec Claudine Normand sur la notion de « sujet » chez Benveniste en essayant d’établir ce que la linguistique de la subjectivité de Benveniste doit à ...la psychanalyse freudienne. L’essentiel de ce qui rapproche la linguistique de Benveniste de la théorie freudienne du langage passe par ce que Benveniste appelle, dans son article de 1946, la « théorie linguistique de la personne verbale ». La re-découverte de la disparité entre Je-tu et Il/on lui permet d’élaborer la théorie de l’énonciation avec le descriptif de son « appareil ». Là est le cœur de l’héritage, à tout le moins d’une profonde convergence de compréhension des faits du langage et de ce qui en permet l’expression subjective consciente ou inconsciente, subjectivité inhérente au langage. Benveniste se réapproprie de façon critique et dans une entreprise d’élaboration théorique linguistique la découverte freudienne qui commence à faire doxa. Au lieu de laisser de côté la découverte freudienne du caractère essentiel du rapport de parole pour la construction de l’humain, il l’observe et la réintègre dans un autre champ de travail : celui de la compréhension du fonctionnement linguistique du langage. Il fait passer les acquis freudiens du champ d’étude de la psyche au champ d’études du fonctionnement linguistique. Le sujet freudien devient le sujet d’énonciation, car celui qui énonce est un sujet.
