TO THE EDITOR: West Nile virus (WNV) is a member of the genus Flavivirus within the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex. The enzootic virus cycle involves transmission between avian hosts and ...ornithophilic mosquitoes, whereas humans and horses are considered dead-end hosts. Given the recent increase of WNV infection in humans and horses in Europe, concern has been raised regarding public and animal health.
For Hilfer derivatives of the product of two functions, we present equations and inequalities, generalizing well‐known results for Caputo and Riemann‐Liouville derivatives. Using the Laplace ...transformation, we introduce a generalized distributed Mittag‐Leffler‐Hilfer stability and show two results for like‐Lyapunov stability. We also extend equations and inequalities for the product of two functions of Hilfer derivatives of distributed order. Finally, we give some consequences and examples that illustrate the theory.

The ALICE experiment went through major upgrades in preparation for Runs 3 and 4 at the CERN LHC, which foresee a significant increase in the data stream rate. To cope with it, a new Computing System ...Online–Offline (O2) was developed by ALICE and several detectors were upgraded. One of these upgrades corresponded to the ALICE Diffractive (AD) detector, which was replaced by the new Forward Diffractive Detector (FDD). A fundamental system that allows for recording of data as well as for the stable and safe operation of the experimental setup is the Detector Control System (DCS). The DCS controls, monitors, and configures detectors’ hardware and their subsystems among which are commercial hardware and specific custom equipment. In this work, we describe the implementation of the DCS of FDD, which was designed and developed using the SCADA commercial software WinCC Open Architecture (WinCC-OA®) and the Joint Controls Project (JCOP) Framework. We also describe the modeling of FDD-DCS as a finite state machine to be integrated into the ALICE Central DCS, and to be operated by DCS shifters in the run control center and, remotely, by detector experts. This new DCS was developed to comply with the new LHC operational standards that allow for processing the increased luminosity due to collisions at a higher energy, and for fulfilling the specific requirements of the ALICE experiment, in order to address the scientific challenges of its physics program.

It has been shown that a hot and dense deconfined nuclear matter state produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, can be quantitatively described by the String Percolation phenomenological ...model. The model address the phase transition in terms of the two-dimensional continuum percolation theory over strings, which are schematic representations of the fundamental interactions among the partons of the colliding nuclei in the initial state. In this work, we present an extension of the critical string density results including the eccentricity dependence on the initial state geometry focus on small string number with different density profile, small deviations from the different profile densities are found. The percolation threshold shows consistency with the thermodynamic limit for the uniform density profile with a large number of strings in the case of circular boundary system. A significant dependence on the eccentricity for a small number of strings compared to high occupancy systems is exhibited, the implications may become relevant in hadron–hadron or hadron–nucleus collision systems.

The QCD phase diagram, in particular its sector of high baryon density, is one of the most prominent outstanding mysteries within the Standard Model of particle physics. We sketch a project how to ...arrive at a conjecture for the case of two massless quark flavours. The pattern of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is isomorphic to the spontaneous magnetisation in an O(4) non-linear σ-model, which can be employed as a low-energy effective theory to study the critical behaviour. We focus on the 3d O(4) model, where the configurations are divided into topological sectors, as in QCD. A topological winding with minimal Euclidean action is denoted as a skyrmion, and the topological charge corresponds to the QCD baryon number. This effective model can be simulated on a lattice with a powerful cluster algorithm, which should allow us to identify the features of the critical temperature, as we proceed from low to high baryon density. In this sense, this projected numerical study has the potential to provide us with a conjecture about the phase diagram of QCD with two massless quark flavours.

were considered. Our more effective blend was determined through preliminary bioassays using the high-throughput screening system (HITSS) and 90 × 90 cm mosquito cages. We designed a low-cost, pyramid-shaped, sticky cardboard trap to incorporate the selected blend. Semi-field 2 × 2 m cages and field tests were utilized to evaluate its effectiveness through mosquito capture percentages. In laboratory tests, blend number 2 presented an attraction percentage of 47.5 ± 4.8%; meanwhile, in semi-field cages, a 4-inch, 110 v powered fan was used to disperse the attractants, and then a similar capture percentage of 43.2 ± 4.0% was recorded. Results were recorded during the field evaluation of the at-house indoor environment and were compared with those recorded with the golden-standard BG-Sentinel trap, i.e., our prototype trapped an average of 6.0 ± 1.5 mosquitoes versus 10.0 ± 2.6. Summary
West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito‐transmitted flavivirus recognized as an emerging and re‐emerging pathogen in different countries. This study describes the monitoring of the first WNV ...epidemic in Spain between 2010 and 2011. Between September and December 2010, 36 outbreaks of WNV in horses were reported in three different provinces of Andalusia (southern Spain), with no apparent spread outside this area. The temporal distribution and the clinical signs observed during the WNV epidemic in Spain were, in general, similar to those reported in Europe and in the Mediterranean Basin. Morbidity, mortality and fatality rate in the affected herds were 4.6, 1.4 and 35.3%, respectively. Thirty‐six of 75 (47.4%) suspected herds investigated presented at least one IgM seropositive animal. The individual seroprevalence in unvaccinated animals from the infected holdings was 51.7%. RNA WNV lineage 1 virus was confirmed from blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples in a lethally infected horse. The entomological survey showed that the most abundant mosquito species detected in the affected area was Culex pipiens. A cross‐sectional study was carried out in non‐suspected herds between April 2010 and February 2011 in the affected area. The individual seroprevalence was 11.0%, and six of the 38 herds sampled (15.8%) presented at least one seropositive animal. The results showed active WNV circulation several months before the first outbreak was reported in horses. The seropositivity found in municipalities where clinical cases were not reported indicates a higher geographical dissemination of the virus. Significantly higher seroprevalences were detected in areas close to Morocco. Furthermore, 90 wild ruminants were tested for the presence of antibodies against WNV, but the results were all negative.
