This paper analyzes the influence of large bank shareholders on the terms of bank loans for a sample of 12,045 loans to 3,290 borrowers from 45 countries over the period 2004–2013. We investigate the ...effects of bank control over bank loan terms during the global financial crisis, regardless of whether the bank shareholder is a lender or not. In line with a monitoring effect, the results suggest that firms with bank shareholders that are non‐lenders borrowed at lower interest rates and longer maturities during the period of crisis. However, borrowers paid higher spreads and were offered shorter maturities when they borrowed from banks that are also shareholders. This effect is consistent with banks obtaining private benefits as large shareholders as a consequence of the informational hold‐up problems affecting borrowers.
The VELOUR study showed the benefit of FOLFIRI-Aflibercept (FA) versus FOLFIRI in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in second-line treatment. However, only 36% of the included ...patients were ≥65 years. Thus, we seek to evaluate the efficacy and safety of FA in the elderly population in the context of routine practice.
We conducted an observational, retrospective, multicenter, observational study of patients ≥70 years with mCRC treated with FA after progression to oxaliplatin chemotherapy in routine clinical practice in 9 hospitals of the GITuD group.
Of 388 patients treated with FA between June 2013 and November 2018, 75 patients ≥70 years were included. The median number of cycles was 10 and the objective response (ORR) and disease control rates (DCR) were 33.8% and 72.0%, respectively. With a median follow-up of 27.1 months, median Progression-free survival (PFS) was 6.6 months and median Overall Survival (OS) was 15.1 months. One third fewer metastasectomies were performed in the ≥75 years' subgroup (24 vs. 52%, p = 0.024) and more initial FOLFIRI dose reductions (68 vs. 36%, p = 0.014). ORR (23.8% vs. 38.3%), DCR (42.8% vs. 85.1%), and PFS (4 vs. 7.8 months; p = 0.017) were significantly less, without difference in OS (9.9 vs. 17.1 months; p = 0.129). The presence of prior hypertension (HT) (PFS 7.9 vs. 5.7 months, p = 0.049) and HT ≥ grade 3 during treatment (PFS 7.6 vs. 6.6 months, p = 0.024) were associated with longer PFS. The most frequent grade 3/4 adverse events were: asthenia (21.3%), neutropenia (14.7%), and diarrhea (14.7%). 57.3% required FOLFIRI dose reduction; 34.7% of aflibercept, including discontinuation (5.3% and 18.7%, respectively).
FA combination is effective in patients ≥70 years. The occurrence of HT is predictive of efficacy. Close monitoring of toxicity and initial dose adjustment is recommended.

285 PMS and 285 age-matched controls, as well as 88 PMDD cases and 176 controls participated in the study. Medium and high levels of perceived stress were associated with an increase in the odds of PMS (Odds Ratio (OR) = 2.49; 95%CI: 1.41-4.39 and OR = 4.90; 95%CI: 2.70-8.89, respectively). For PMDD the results were: OR = 2.61; 95%CI: 1.35-5.05 and OR = 5.79; 95%CI: 2.63-12.76, respectively. Subjects with medium and high levels of neuroticism were also at higher odds of suffering from PMS (OR = 2.53; 95%CI: 1.06-6.06 and OR = 8.05; 95%CI: 3.07-2.12, respectively). For PMDD, the results were OR = 3.70; 95%CI: 1.27-10.77 and 5.73: 95%CI: 1.96-16.77, respectively. High levels in the large majority of coping strategies were also associated with increased odds of PMS and PMDD.
Psychological factors including perceived stress, neuroticism and coping strategies are strongly related to PMS/PMDD. This association is unlikely to be due to confounding or misclassification bias. A reverse causation process cannot be ruled out although its likelihood is remote.
This paper analyses the influence of female directors on the demand for audit effort and on financial reporting quality for a sample of Australian non-financial listed firms over the period ...2004-2018. Our results suggest that gender diversity at the Board and the audit committee have a beneficial impact both on the demand of audit effort and on the outcomes of the audit process. This beneficial effect of female directors is attributable to non-executive directors. Long tenured and busy female directors and women chairing the board or the audit committee are revealed as especially influential at improving audit efforts and outcomes. We obtain further indication that audit effort and reporting quality improve from the first women added to the board not being necessary to attain a certain critical mass to generate these effects. Also, gender diversity improves the external auditor independence though the presence of lower of non-audit fees. The results are robust to endogeneity corrections. Evidence from the Australian market provides a positive argument for small and mid-cap Australian listed firms to follow the path of large Australian listed firms towards gender diversity.

Sentence representation at the semantic level is a challenging task for natural language processing and Artificial Intelligence. Despite the advances in word embeddings (i.e. word vector representations), capturing sentence meaning is an open question due to complexities of semantic interactions among words. In this paper, we present an embedding method, which is aimed at learning unsupervised sentence representations from unlabeled text. We propose an unsupervised method that models a sentence as a weighted series of word embeddings. The weights of the series are fitted by using Shannon’s Mutual Information (MI) among words, sentences and the corpus. In fact, the Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency transform (TF–IDF) is a reliable estimate of such MI. Our method offers advantages over existing ones: identifiable modules, short-term training, online inference of (unseen) sentence representations, as well as independence from domain, external knowledge and linguistic annotation resources. Results showed that our model, despite its concreteness and low computational cost, was competitive with the state of the art in well-known Semantic Textual Similarity (STS) tasks.
Although chemotherapy is the cornerstone treatment for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), acquired chemoresistance is common and constitutes the main reason for treatment failure. ...Monoclonal antibodies against insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) have been tested in pre-treated mCRC patients, but results have been largely deceiving.
We analysed time to progression, overall survival, and the mutational status of RAS, BRAF and nuclear p-IGF-1R expression by immunohistochemistry, in 470 metastatic CRC patients. The effect of IGF-1R activation and distribution was also assessed using cellular models of CRC and RNAi for functional validation.
Nuclear IGF-1R increased in metastatic tumours compared to paired untreated primary tumours, and significantly correlated with poor overall survival in mCRC patients. In vitro, chemo-resistant cell lines presented significantly higher levels of IGF-1R expression within the nuclear compartment, and PIAS3, a protein implicated also in the sumoylation process of intranuclear proteins, contributed to IGF-1R nuclear sequestration, highlighting the essential role of PIAS3 in this process. Intriguingly, we observed that ganitumab, an IGF-1R blocking-antibody used in several clinical trials, and dasatinib, an SRC inhibitor, increased the nuclear localisation of IGF-1R.
Our study demonstrates that IGF-1R nuclear location might lead to chemotherapy and targeted agent resistance.

We investigate stock market reactions to the announcement of the new, June 2022 European Union (EU) regulation on board gender diversity, which requires firms to appoint a minimum of 33% female directors (or 40% female non-executive directors). We find that the abnormal market returns surrounding the EU announcement are positive. We also note that the observed positive valuation effects are particularly strong for: (1) firms in countries with softer existing regulations on board gender diversity; and (2) firms with a larger gap between current levels of board gender diversity and the 33% gender quota. Our analysis of the EU legislation on gender quotas offers solid evidence that board gender quotas are perceived by investors as beneficial, particularly for firms exposed to a large gender imbalance.
INTRODUCTION: The coexpression of pIGF-1R and MMP-7 (double-positive phenotype, DP) correlates with poor overall survival (OS) in KRAS wild-type (WT) (exon 2) metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) ...patients treated with irinotecan-cetuximab in second/third line. METHODS: We analyzed two prospective biomarker design trials of newly diagnosed RAS-WT mCRC patients treated with panitumumab-FOLFOX6 (PULSE trial; NCT01288339) or cetuximab plus either FOLFOX6/FOLFIRI (POSIBA trial; NCT01276379). The main exposure was DP phenotype (DP/non-DP), as assessed by two independent pathologists. DP cases were defined by immunohistochemistry as >70% expression of moderate or strong intensity for both MMP-7 and pIGF-1R. Primary endpoint: progression-free survival (PFS); secondary endpoints: OS and response rate. PFS and OS were adjusted by baseline characteristics using multivariate Cox models. RESULTS: We analyzed 67 patients (30 non-DP, 37 DP) in the PULSE trial and 181 patients in the POSIBA trial (158 non-DP, 23 DP). Response rates and PFS were similar between groups in both studies. DP was associated with prolonged OS in PULSE (adjusted HR: 0.23; 95%CI: 0.11-0.52; P=.0004) and with shorter OS in POSIBA (adjusted HR: 1.67; 95%CI: 0.96-2.90; P=.07). CONCLUSION: A differential effect of anti-EGFRs on survival by DP phenotype was observed. Panitumumab might be more beneficial for RAS-WT mCRC patients with DP phenotype, whereas cetuximab might improve OS in non-DP.

To analyze the clinical utility of a clinical risk scale to predict the need for advanced airway management in patients with deep neck abscess.
Observational, analytical, cross-sectional study. Patients over 18 years old, both genders, with surgical management of a deep neck abscess, between January 1st, 2015 to December 31th, 2021, who were applied the clinical risk scale (https://7-414-5-19.shinyapps.io/ClinicalRiskScore/). The sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the scale were calculated based on the identified clinical outcomes. A p<0.05 was considered significant.
A sample of 213 patients was obtained, 121 (56.8%) men, of whom 50 (23.5%) required advanced airway management. Dyspnea was the variable with the most statistical weight in our study, (p=0.001) as well as the multiple spaces involvement, (p=0.001) the presence of air corpuscles, (p=0.001) compromise of the retropharyngeal space (p=0.001) and age greater than 55 years (p=0.001). Taking these data into account, were found for the clinical risk scale a sensitivity of 97% and a specificity of 65% (p=0.001, 95% CI 0.856–0.984).
The clinical risk scale developed to predict advanced airway management in patients with a diagnosis of deep neck abscess may be applicable in our environment with high sensitivity and specificity.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we find that Australian firms with environmentally sustainable practices generated higher abnormal returns. Firms with CEOs who were exposed to ...significant health risks from COVID-19 experienced poorer stock market performance. Firms with low pre-COVID default risk and high pre-COVID liquidity performed better during the COVID-19 stock market crash. This research signifies the importance of environmental sustainability for Australian firms to endure pandemics such as COVID-19.
