The scaling of disc galaxy rotation velocity with baryonic mass (the 'baryonic Tully-Fisher' relation, BTF) has long confounded galaxy formation models. It is steeper than the M ... V super( 3) ...scaling relating halo virial masses and circular velocities and its zero-point implies that galaxies comprise a very small fraction of available baryons. Such low galaxy formation efficiencies may, in principle, be explained by winds driven by evolving stars, but the tightness of the BTF relation argues against the substantial scatter expected from such a vigorous feedback mechanism. We use the apostle/eagle simulations to show that the BTF relation is well reproduced in ...cold dark matter (CDM) simulations that match the size and number of galaxies as a function of stellar mass. In such models, galaxy rotation velocities are proportional to halo virial velocity and the steep velocity-mass dependence results from the decline in galaxy formation efficiency with decreasing halo mass needed to reconcile the CDM halo mass function with the galaxy luminosity function. The scatter in the simulated BTF is smaller than observed, even when considering all simulated galaxies and not just rotationally supported ones. The simulations predict that the BTF should become increasingly steep at the faint end, although the velocity scatter at fixed mass should remain small. Observed galaxies with rotation speeds below ~40 km s super( -1) seem to deviate from this prediction. We discuss observational biases and modelling uncertainties that may help to explain this disagreement in the context of ...CDM models of dwarf galaxy formation. ABSTRACT
The cold dark matter halo mass function is much steeper than the galaxy stellar mass function on galactic and subgalactic scales. This difference is usually reconciled by assuming that the ...galaxy formation efficiency drops sharply with decreasing halo mass, so that virtually no dwarf galaxies form in haloes less massive than ∼1010 M⊙. In turn, this implies that, at any given radius, the dark mass enclosed by a galaxy must exceed a certain minimum. We use rotation curves of dwarf galaxies compiled from the literature to explore whether their enclosed mass is consistent with these constraints. We find that almost one‐half of the dwarfs in our sample with stellar mass in the range of 106 < Mgal/M⊙ < 107 are at odds with this restriction: either they live in haloes with masses substantially below 1010 M⊙ or there is a mechanism capable of reducing the dark mass enclosed by some of the faintest dwarfs. Neither possibility is easily accommodated within the standard Λ cold dark matter scenario. Extending galaxy formation to haloes well below 1010 M⊙ would lead to large numbers of dwarf galaxies in excess of current estimates; at the same time, the extremely low stellar mass of the systems involved makes it unlikely that baryonic effects can reduce their dark matter content. Resolving this challenge seems to require new insights into dwarf galaxy formation, or perhaps a radical revision of the prevailing paradigm.
ABSTRACT
Photometric data can be analysed using the 3D correlation function ξp to extract cosmological information via e.g. measurement of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). Previous studies ...modeled ξp assuming a Gaussian photo-z approximation. In this work we improve the modeling by incorporating realistic photo-z distribution. We show that the position of the BAO scale in ξp is determined by the photo-z distribution and the Jacobian of the transformation. The latter diverges at the transverse scale of the separation s⊥, and it explains why ξp traces the underlying correlation function at s⊥, rather than s, when the photo-z uncertainty σz/(1+ z) ≳ 0.02. We also obtain the Gaussian covariance for ξp. Due to photo-z mixing, the covariance of ξp shows strong off-diagonal elements. The high correlation of the data causes some issues to the data fitting. None the less, we find that either it can be solved by suppressing the largest eigenvalues of the covariance or it is not directly related to the BAO. We test our BAO fitting pipeline using a set of mock catalogs. The data set is dedicated for Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) BAO analyses and includes realistic photo-z distributions. The theory template is in good agreement with mock measurement. Based on the DES Y3 mocks, ξp statistic is forecast to constrain the BAO shift parameter α to be 1.001 ± 0.023, which is well consistent with the corresponding constraint derived from the angular correlation function measurements. Thus, ξp offers a competitive alternative for the photometric data analyses.
Elliptical (E) and spiral (S) galaxies follow tight, but different, scaling laws that link their stellar masses, radii, and characteristic velocities. Mass and velocity, for example, scale tightly in ...spirals with little dependence on galaxy radius (the ‘Tully-Fisher relation’; TFR). On the other hand, ellipticals appear to trace a 2D surface in size-mass-velocity space (the ‘Fundamental Plane’; FP). Over the years, a number of studies have attempted to understand these empirical relations, usually in terms of variations of the virial theorem for E galaxies and in terms of the scaling relations of dark matter halos for spirals. We use Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to show that the scaling relations of both ellipticals and spirals arise as the result of (i) a tight galaxy mass–dark halo mass relation and (ii) the self-similar mass profile of cold dark matter halos. In this interpretation, E and S galaxies of a given stellar mass inhabit halos of similar masses, and their different scaling laws result from the varying amounts of dark matter enclosed within their luminous radii. This scenario suggests a new galaxy distance indicator applicable to galaxies of all morphologies and provides simple and intuitive explanations for long-standing puzzles, such as why the TFR is independent of surface brightness, or what causes the ‘tilt’ in the FP. Our results provide strong support for the predictions of ΛCDM in the strongly non-linear regime, as well as guidance for further improvements to cosmological simulations of galaxy formation.
The Tully-Fisher relation (TFR) links the stellar mass of a disc galaxy, M sub( str), to its rotation speed: it is well approximated by a power law, shows little scatter, and evolves weakly with ...redshift. The relation has been interpreted as reflecting the mass-velocity scaling (M ... V super( 3)) of dark matter haloes, but this interpretation has been called into question by abundance-matching (AM) models, which predict the galaxy-halo mass relation to deviate substantially from a single power law and to evolve rapidly with redshift. We study the TFR of luminous spirals and its relation to AM using the EAGLE set of ... cold dark matter (...CDM) cosmological simulations. Matching both relations requires disc sizes to satisfy constraints given by the concentration of haloes and their response to galaxy assembly. EAGLE galaxies approximately match these constraints and show a tight mass-velocity scaling that compares favourably with the observed TFR. The TFR is degenerate to changes in galaxy formation efficiency and the mass-size relation; simulations that fail to match the galaxy stellar mass function may fit the observed TFR if galaxies follow a different mass-size relation. The small scatter in the simulated TFR results because, at fixed halo mass, galaxy mass and rotation speed correlate strongly, scattering galaxies along the main relation. EAGLE galaxies evolve with lookback time following approximately the prescriptions of AM models and the observed mass-size relation of bright spirals, leading to a weak TFR evolution consistent with observation out to z = 1. ...CDM models that match both the abundance and size of galaxies as a function of stellar mass have no difficulty reproducing the observed TFR and its evolution. . We split the galaxies on color and find significant differences in their profile shapes. Red and green-valley galaxies show a splashback-like minimum in their slope profile consistent with theory, while the bluest galaxies show a weak feature at a smaller radius. We develop a mapping of galaxies to subhalos in simulations and assign colors based on infall time onto their hosts. We find that the shift in location of the steepest slope and different profile shapes can be mapped to the average time of infall of galaxies of different colors. The steepest slope traces a discontinuity in the phase space of dark matter halos. By relating spatial profiles to infall time, we can use splashback as a clock to understand galaxy quenching. We find that red galaxies have on average been in clusters over 3.2 Gyr, green galaxies about 2.2 Gyr, while blue galaxies have been accreted most recently and have not reached apocenter. Using the full radial profiles, we fit a simple quenching model and find that the onset of galaxy quenching occurs after a delay of about a gigayear and that galaxies quench rapidly thereafter with an exponential timescale of 0.6 Gyr.

Local primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is a promising observable of the underlying physics of inflation, characterized by $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc}$. We present the methodology to measure ...$f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc}$ from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) data using the two-point angular correlation function (ACF) with scale-dependent bias. One of the focuses of the work is the integral constraint (IC). This condition appears when estimating the mean number density of galaxies from the data and is key in obtaining unbiased $f_{\rm NL}^{\rm loc}$ constraints. The methods are analysed for two types of simulations: ∼246 goliat-png N-body small area simulations with fNL equal to −100 and 100, and 1952 Gaussian ice-cola mocks with fNL = 0 that follow the DES angular and redshift distribution. We use the ensemble of goliat-png mocks to show the importance of the IC when measuring PNG, where we recover the fiducial values of fNL within the 1σ when including the IC. In contrast, we found a bias of ΔfNL ∼ 100 when not including it. For a DES-like scenario, we forecast a bias of ΔfNL ∼ 23, equivalent to 1.8σ, when not using the IC for a fiducial value of fNL = 100. We use the ice-cola mocks to validate our analysis in a realistic DES-like set-up finding it robust to different analysis choices: best-fitting estimator, the effect of IC, BAO damping, covariance, and scale choices. We forecast a measurement of fNL within σ(fNL) = 31 when using the DES-Y3 BAO sample, with the ACF in the 1 deg < θ < 20 deg range.
