Bronchial atresia is a rare anomaly that characteristically presents with a pulmonary nodule and hyperinflation of the lung distal to the nodule. To make this diagnosis definitively, invasive studies ...have been required. Now with the combined use of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, a diagnosis can be made without resorting to invasive techniques. This article describes a case of bronchial atresia illustrating the noninvasive approach.
During therapeutic treatment with heavy ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To ...estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, an accurate prediction on the fluences of these secondary fragments is necessary. Nowadays, a very limited set of double di ffential carbon fragmentation cross sections are being measured in the energy range used in hadrontherapy (40 to 400 MeV/u). Therefore, new measurements are performed to determine the double di ffential cross section of carbon on di erent thin targets. This work describes the experimental results of an experiment performed on May 2011 at GANIL. The double di ffential cross sections and the angular distributions of secondary fragments produced in the 12C fragmentation at 95 MeV/u on thin targets (C, CH2, Al, Al2O3, Ti and PMMA) have been measured. The experimental setup will be precisely described, the systematic error study will be explained and all the experimental data will be presented.
Two patients, a 66-year-old man (case 1) and a 55-year-old woman (case 2), had been known (for 40 and 35 years, respectively) to have type 1 neurofibromatosis. Dyspnoea, recently even at rest, had ...developed in both over the past few years. Both were emaciated (weight 62 kg, height 180 cm; 42 kg, 166 cm, respectively). In both the chest radiography had net-like increased interstitial markings. Computed tomography in case 1 showed largely subpleural small-blister-like changes bilaterally (honeycomb lung), while there were large apical cysts bilaterally in case 2. Lung function tests demonstrated restrictive changes in case 1 (vital capacity 48% of norm, relative one-second capacity 88%) and severe ventilation abnormality in case 2 (vital capacity 42% of norm, relative one-second capacity 47%). Both had marked hypoxaemia even at rest and the walking limit was 200 m in case 1, 40 m in case 2. The pulmonary changes were most likely manifestations of the neurofibromatosis. Symptomatic treatment consisted of long-term oxygen therapy with a portable liquid oxygen system (flow rate: 1-2 l/min at rest and 3-5 l/min on exercise; duration: 24 h/d). This achieved a walking distance without hypoxaemia of 500 and 200 m, respectively, with marked improvement in the patients' condition.
During therapeutic treatment with heavier ions like carbon, the beam undergoes nuclear fragmentation and secondary light charged particles, in particular protons and alpha particles, are produced. To ...estimate the dose deposited into the tumors and the surrounding healthy tissues, the accuracy must be higher than (\(\pm\)3% and\(\pm\)1 mm). Therefore, measurements are performed to determine the double differential cross section for different reactions. In this paper, the analysis of data from 12C +12C reactions at 95 MeV/u are presented. The emitted particles are detected with \DeltaEthin-\DeltaEthick-E telescopes made of a stack of two silicon detectors and a CsI crystal. Two different methods are used to identify the particles. One is based on graphical cuts onto the \DeltaE-E maps, the second is based on the so-called KaliVeda method using a functional description of \DeltaE versus E. The results of the two methods will be presented in this paper as well as the comparison between both.

To determine the cardiovascular responses to beta-blockade and cold air stress, six males were randomly exposed at rest to three drug conditions (placebo, nonselective beta-blockade (propranolol), ...and selective beta-blockade (atenolol)) in each of two environments (5 and 25 degrees C) for 1 h. Cardiac output was lower on beta-blockade than on the placebo in both the 25 and 5 degrees C environments. Cardiac output on propranolol (4.2 +/- 0.3 L.min-1) at 5 degrees C was lower than on atenolol (4.7 +/- 0.4 L.min-1, p < 0.05). Mean arterial pressure was greater (p < 0.05) at 5 than 25 degrees C for each drug condition. There was no drug effect on total peripheral resistance at 25 degrees C. At 5 degrees C, total peripheral resistance on both beta-blockers (propranolol 1942.7 +/- 169.9 dyn.s.cm-5 (1 dyn = 10 microN); atenolol 1706.7 +/- 160.0 dyn.s.cm-5) was higher (p < 0.05) than on the placebo (1485.3 +/- 111.8 dyn.s.cm-5). Total peripheral resistance was also higher on propranolol than atenolol (p < 0.05). In conclusion, cold air stress interacts with beta-blockade to elevate total peripheral resistance by decreasing cardiac output while having little effect on mean arterial pressure. These effects are greater on nonselective than on selective blockade.
A boy with MCA/MR and a fragile site (FS) at 8q22 opens the discussion of a possible association between a rare autosomal FS and an abnormal phenotype. The child was born after prenatal diagnosis of ...ureterohydronephrosis. He had facial dysmorphia and mental retardation (IQ = 40). The karyotype showed 8q22 FS in 12% of the cells obtained after addition of FUdR to the culture medium. No other etiologic factor was shown to be responsible for the MCA/MR syndrome. Several authors have reported a variety of neurodevelopmental abnormalities and mental retardation in individuals with rare FS expressed on chromosomes 2, 9, 10, 16 and 19. If rare FS predispose to phenotypic abnormalities what are the mechanisms?
