Hypotrichosis with juvenile macular dystrophy is a rare autosomal recessive disease, characterized by hypotrichosis and progressive macular degeneration, leading to blindness in the first three ...decades of life. It is associated with mutations in the cadherin 3 gene, resulting in the abnormal expression of P-cadherin. We report a case of a 4-year-old female patient diagnosed with this genodermatosis.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors and a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Irrespective of the method that allows for risk stratification of prostate ...cancer suspects, diagnosis relies on tissue sampling through prostate biopsy and subsequent histopathological evaluation. This provides critical information about disease aggressiveness, which is required for adequate patient management. Prostate biopsy methods have significantly evolved over the years, including the definition of indications, sampling schemes and use of imaging techniques (ultrasound and MRI) that allow for more accurate tissue sampling. In response to the challenges emerging from more precise collection of minute prostate tissue samples for analysis, histopathological assessment should include not only the observation of routinely stained sections, but also, and increasingly so, a series of ancillary techniques, especially immunohistochemistry, which increment the accuracy of prostate cancer diagnosis and may provide relevant information to guide patient management.
Visceral and cutaneous leishmaniasis are major endemic diseases in northeast Brazil. The objective of the current study was to determine the species and geographic distribution of potential sand fly ...vectors of Leishmania in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Sand flies were captured using CDC light traps in 30 municipalities distributed throughout the 8 geographic zones of the state. Twelve Lutzomyia species were identified. Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva was the most prevalent and accounted for 85.59% of the sand fly captured. The remaining species were distributed as follows: L. evandroi Costa Lima & Antunes (10.83%), L. oswaldoi Mangabeira (0.99%), L. sallesi Galvão & Coutinho (0.58%), L. intermedia Lutz & Neiva (0.53%), L. lenti Mangabeira (0.53%), L. migonei França (0.49%), L. walkeri Newstead (0.24%), L. goiana Martins, Falcão & Silva (0.15%), L. samueli Deane (0.04%), and L. capixaba Dias, Falcão, Silva & Martins (0.03%), and L. peresi Mangabeira (0.01%). L. longipalpis, which is known to be a vector of Leishmania chagasi Cunha & Chagas (L. donovani chagasi), was captured in 93% of municipalities distributed across all geographical areas of the state and its distribution was independent of obvious climatic and topographic parameters. It was identified in all municipalities where human visceral leishmaniasis had been reported. In contrast, climate and topography appeared to be important for other Lutzomyia species. For example, L. intermedia and L. migonei, which are known to transmit Leishmania braziliensis Viana, were geographically restricted. They were captured in municipalities where cases of cutaneous and mucosal leishmaniasis had been reported. The widespread distribution of L. longipalpis, its adaptation to peridomicillary settings, and its ability to transmit L. (d.) chagasi suggest that a large number of persons may be at risk of acquiring visceral leishmaniasis in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.
Analysis of the phylogenetic relationships among trypanosomes from vertebrates and invertebrates disclosed a new lineage of trypanosomes circulating among anurans and sand flies that share the same ...ecotopes in Brazilian Amazonia. This assemblage of closely related trypanosomes was determined by comparing whole SSU rDNA sequences of anuran trypanosomes from the Brazilian biomes of Amazonia, the Pantanal, and the Atlantic Forest and from Europe, North America, and Africa, and from trypanosomes of sand flies from Amazonia. Phylogenetic trees based on maximum likelihood and parsimony corroborated the positioning of all new anuran trypanosomes in the aquatic clade but did not support the monophyly of anuran trypanosomes. However, all analyses always supported four major clades (An01‐04) of anuran trypanosomes. Clade An04 is composed of trypanosomes from exotic anurans. Isolates in clades An01 and An02 were from Brazilian frogs and toads captured in the three biomes studied, Amazonia, the Pantanal and the Atlantic Forest. Clade An01 contains mostly isolates from Hylidae whereas clade An02 comprises mostly isolates from Bufonidae; and clade An03 contains trypanosomes from sand flies and anurans of Bufonidae, Leptodactylidae, and Leiuperidae exclusively from Amazonia. To our knowledge, this is the first study describing morphological and growth features, and molecular phylogenetic affiliation of trypanosomes from anurans and phlebotomines, incriminating these flies as invertebrate hosts and probably also as important vectors of Amazonian terrestrial anuran trypanosomes.
This research explores the realm of Vehicle Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) and emphasizes the potential of the field. Applications that enable direct communication between vehicles and Vulnerable Road ...Users (VRUs) have the potential to significantly improve road safety for all road users. The goal is to let cars know where VRUs are, how fast they are going, and in what direction - all in real-time, taking advantage of the current progress in Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. The implemented solution centers on pedestrian detection using advanced communication protocols with a Road Side Unit (RSU). Acting as a central hub, the RSU collects pedestrian information and disseminates it to vehicles. Equipped with this data, vehicles autonomously execute collision avoidance algorithms, ensuring rapid and informed responses to potential road hazards. The proposed system underwent comprehensive implementation and testing in realistic scenarios using simulation environments. The results align with expectations, validating the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed solution.
Background:Fatigue, sleep disorders and neuropsychiatric symptoms are frequently reported in patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The relationships between these symptoms are not yet fully ...understood and their management is difficult in clinical practice. This study was aimed to evaluate the frequency of fatigue, anxiety, depression, vitamin D deficiency and sleep disturbances in patients with MS from our outpatient MS clinic. Methods:This cross-sectional study sample consisted of 78 adult MS patients. They were analyzed on both their clinical features (type of MS, disease duration, clinical severity, type of treatment, psychiatric medication) and specific scales scores (Expanded Disability Status Scale, Modified Fatigue Impact Scale - MFIS, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale- HADS, Epworth Sleepiness Scale - ESS, Sun exposure status scale). Vitamin D levels as measured by 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) serum concentration was obtained. Results:The prevalence of clinically significant fatigue was 50%; mean MFIS score was 35.72 (SD 19.6), which was significantly higher than in healthy population. There was a strong linear correlation of fatigue with anxiety (r=0.681, p<0.005) and depression (r=0.780, p<0.005). Fatigue was progressively higher with increased clinical disability (p<0.001). Patients reporting insomnia had higher fatigue levels(p<0.023). Low vitamin D levels were seen in 42.6% of patients. Patients with depressive symptoms were more likely to report lower levels of present sun exposure (p<0.037).Conclusions:Fatigue is a very common symptom in our MS patients, our findings support that higher levels of MS disability are associated with increased fatigue and should be considered. Importantly, we found that fatigue, sleep disturbances and neuropsychiatric symptoms cluster together and should be recognized and managed in MS patients.
Lutzomyia derelicta n. sp. is described from specimens collected in an
isolated xeric habitat in the rainforest in the north of the State of
Pará, Brazil. The new species lacks the posterior bulge in ...the
dorsal wall of the cibarium characteristic of the New World genus
Lutzomyia, and the armature of the male genitalia is of the pattern
found elsewhere only in the Old World species of Sergentomyia. L.
derelicta is phenetically intermediate between the known species of
Lutzomyia and Sergentomyia, and cannot readily be placed in any
existing subgenus or species group of either genus.
