We propose a pre-bunched Laser Wakefield Acceleration (LWFA) experiment in a plasma channel at the BNL DUV-FEL Facility. BNL DUV-FEL facility is uniquely qualified to carry out the proposed ...experiment because of the high-brightness electron beam and RF synchronized TW Ti:Sapphire laser system. The DUV- FEL is a 200 MeV linac facility equipped with a photocathode RF gun injector, a 100 fs Ti:Sapphire laser system and a magnetic bunch compressor. The proposed LWFA will inject a 150 MeV, 10 fs electron bunch into a centimeters long plasma channel. Simulation and preliminary experiment showed that, high-brightness 10 fs electron bunch with 20 pC charge could be produced using the technique of longitudinal emittance compensation. The initial experiment will be performed using the existing Ti:Sapphire laser system (50 mJ, 100 fs) with 30 /spl mu/mm spot and 4 cm channel, the maximum energy gain will be about 15 MeV. We propose to upgrade the existing SDL laser output to 500 mJ with a shorter pulse length (50 fs). For an electron beam spot size of 20 urn, the expected energy gain is about 100 MeV for a 5 TW, 50 fs laser pulse.
Δ-modulated feedback control of a linear system introduces nonlinearity into the system through switchings between two input values. It has been found that Δ-modulation gives rise to periodic orbits. ...The existence of periodic points of all orders of Sigma-Delta modulation with “leaky” integration is completely characterized by some interesting groups of polynomials with “sign” coefficients. The results are naturally generalized to Sigma-Delta modulations with multiple delays. Further extensions relate to the existence of periodic points arising from Δ-modulated feedback control of a stable linear system in an arbitrary direction, for which some necessary and sufficient conditions are given.

The concept of an empirical mode decomposition method with which any complicated data set can be decomposed into a finite and often small number of intrinsic mode functions (IMF) is introduced. This ...method is used for time-varying signal analysis and provide a better joint time-frequency resolution than other methods like the STFT, wavelet and the Wigner-Ville distribution. Then we bring forward a new principle of the local wave method and the expression of the intrinsic mode function. We also introduce our new signal decomposition method called local mean mode decomposition (LMMD) which can provide better data mean and results.
We report on the experimental results of the dielectric based two beam accelerator (step-up transformer). By using a single high charge beam, we have generated and extracted a high power RF pulse ...from a 7.8 GHz primary dielectric structure and then subsequently transferred to a second accelerating structure with higher dielectric constant and smaller transverse dimensions. We have measured the energy change of a second (witness) beam passing through the acceleration stage. The measured gradient is >4 times the deceleration gradient. The detailed experiment of set-up and results of the measurements are discussed. Future plans for the development of a 100 MeV demonstration accelerator based on this technique is presented.
A recombinant inbred population of soybean was developed from a intraspecies cross of Kefeng1 and Nannong 1138-2. A genetic linkage group of soybean genome was constructed, which composed of 22 ...linkage groups, included 302 loci, covered 2,363.8 cM. The interval mapping was used to identify quantitative trait loci (QLTs) associated with ten important agronomic traits in the RIL population. The results indicated that thirty-four QTLs were detected for the ten traits associated with yield and seed quality. We conclude that QTL analysis offers a useful tool for the genetic improvement of soybean cultivars.
The alpha1beta1 and alpha2beta1 integrins, extracellular matrix receptors for collagens and/or laminins, have similarities in structure and ligand binding. Recent studies suggest that the two ...receptors mediate distinct post-ligand binding events and are not simply redundant receptors. To discern the mechanisms by which the two receptors differ, we focused on the roles of the cytoplasmic domains of the alpha subunits. We expressed either full-length alpha1 integrin subunit cDNA (X1C1), full-length alpha2 integrin subunit cDNA (X2C2), chimeric cDNA composed of the extracellular and transmembrane domains of alpha2 subunit and the cytoplasmic domain of alpha1 (X2C1), chimeric cDNA composed of the extracellular and transmembrane domains of alpha1 subunit and the cytoplasmic domain of alpha2 (X1C2), alpha1 cDNA truncated after the GFFKR sequence (X1C0) or alpha2 cDNA truncated after the GFFKR sequence (X2C0) in K562 cells. Although the cytoplasmic domains of the alpha1 and alpha2 subunits were not required for adhesion, the extent of adhesion at low substrate density was enhanced by the presence of either the alpha1 or alpha2 cytoplasmic tail. Spreading was also influenced by the presence of an alpha subunit cytoplasmic tail. Activation of the protein kinase C pathway with phorbol dibutyrate-stimulated motility that was dependent upon the presence of the alpha2 cytoplasmic tail. Both the phosphatidylinosotide-3-OH kinase and the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways were required for phorbol-activated, alpha2-cytoplasmic tail-dependent migration.

The VLTI Spectro Imager (VSI) was proposed as a second-generation instrument of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer providing the ESO community with spectrally-resolved, near-infrared images at ...angular resolutions down to 1.1 milliarcsecond and spectral resolutions up to R=12000. Targets as faint as K=13 will be imaged without requiring a brighter nearby reference object. The unique combination of high-dynamic-range imaging at high angular resolution and high spectral resolution enables a scientific program which serves a broad user community and at the same time provides the opportunity for breakthroughs in many areas of astrophysic including: probing the initial conditions for planet formation in the AU-scale environments of young stars; imaging convective cells and other phenomena on the surfaces of stars; mapping the chemical and physical environments of evolved stars, stellar remnants, and stellar winds; and disentangling the central regions of active galactic nuclei and supermassive black holes. VSI will provide these new capabilities using technologies which have been extensively tested in the past and VSI requires little in terms of new infrastructure on the VLTI. At the same time, VSI will be able to make maximum use of new infrastructure as it becomes available; for example, by combining 4, 6 and eventually 8 telescopes, enabling rapid imaging through the measurement of up to 28 visibilities in every wavelength channel within a few minutes. The current studies are focused on a 4-telescope version with an upgrade to a 6-telescope one. The instrument contains its own fringe tracker and tip-tilt control in order to reduce the constraints on the VLTI infrastructure and maximize the scientific return.
