This paper presents an analysis of the attitudes of non-native English-speaking students of business and economics towards the use of Slovene as the mother tongue in the acquisition of specialized ...business and economics related terms in English. The research questions posed in this paper address the students’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness and necessity of the teachers’ use of Slovene to explain specialized terms in English and their use of Slovene when learning specialized terms. The results of our analysis are of value to Business English teachers and as they suggest ways in which students’ mother tongue may be used in teaching and learning of specialized terminology in English.
Over the past decades, the monolingual (English-only) approach to English language teaching and learning has prevailed. In recent years, however, the trend of using students’ first language (L1) in ...teaching and learning English as a foreign language has re-emerged. However, the research on the use of L1 in teaching English for specific purposes is far from extensive. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of Slovene as the students’ L1 in teaching and learning Business English at tertiary level. The specific objectives were to determine the students’ attitudes towards the teachers’ and the students’ use of Slovene during Business English lessons and the students’ use of Slovene in learning Business English. The present study was quantitative, with data gathered via a questionnaire. The results show that, on the one hand, there is some inclination towards the use of L1 both in class and during their study of Business English. On the other hand, the preference towards the use of predominantly (or exclusively) English in class is also present and is positively correlated with the level of students’ knowledge of English. The results are of value to English language teachers as they suggest the contexts in which students’ L1 could be used in the process of teaching and learning English for specific purposes.
In our era of globalisation, English is at the top of the languages used in international business. A vast majority of business communication in English is carried out by non-native speakers of ...English. In a cross-cultural exchange of information, the sender and the recipient come from different cultural backgrounds. The patterns of communication vary across the globe and non-native speakers tend to apply their native language patterns when communicating in English. This paper thus focuses on the concept of spoken communication and dimensions of culture and how they are reflected in communication patterns in different business situations. It also addresses the teaching of Business English as a lingua franca and the role of Business English teachers in helping learners develop their communicative and intercultural competence in order to communicate effectively in a multicultural work environment.
Z našo raziskavo smo ugotovili, da so najpogostejši naklonski glagoli v teh dokumentih glagoli shall, will, may, must in can ter, da sta glagolski besedni zvezi ‚modal+infinitive’ and ‘modal+be+past participle’ prisotni najpogosteje. Izsledki naše analize so skladni z namenom in značilnostmi teh dokumentov.
Technical terminology, which comprises individual words and various kinds of more or less fixed word partnerships, constitutes an important part of professional discourse. A good command of domain ...specific collocations adds to the proficiency in specialist communication in any domain, including commerce. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a corpus-based study of the most common collocations of 16 high-frequency nouns in ‘standard terms and conditions of sale’ as authentic, commerce-related documents. Our research shows that the most frequent nouns form a substantial number of significant collocations which can be considered technical terminology in the field of commerce. In turn, these findings can be used as the basis for designing teaching syllabi and teaching materials for courses in English for commerce and trade.
