The detection of GW170817, the first neutron star-neutron star merger observed by Advanced LIGO and Virgo, and its following analyses represent the first contributions of gravitational wave data to ...understanding dense matter. Parameterizing the high density section of the equation of state of both neutron stars through spectral decomposition, and imposing a lower limit on the maximum mass value, led to an estimate of the stars' radii of km and km (Abbott et al 2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 121 161101). These values do not, however, take into account any uncertainty owed to the choice of the crust low-density equation of state, which was fixed to reproduce the SLy equation of state model (Douchin and Haensel 2001 Astron. Astrophys. 380 151). We here re-analyze GW170817 data and establish that different crust models do not strongly impact the mass or tidal deformability of a neutron star-it is impossible to distinguish between low-density models with gravitational wave analysis. However, the crust does have an effect on inferred radius. We predict the systematic error due to this effect using neutron star structure equations, and compare the prediction to results from full parameter estimation runs. For GW170817, this systematic error affects the radius estimate by 0.3 km, approximately of the neutron stars' radii.
The multiple testing problem arises not only when there are many voxels or vertices in an image representation of the brain, but also when multiple contrasts of parameter estimates (that represent ...hypotheses) are tested in the same general linear model. We argue that a correction for this multiplicity must be performed to avoid excess of false positives. Various methods for correction have been proposed in the literature, but few have been applied to brain imaging. Here we discuss and compare different methods to make such correction in different scenarios, showing that one classical and well known method is invalid, and argue that permutation is the best option to perform such correction due to its exactness and flexibility to handle a variety of common imaging situations.
•Correction for multiple testing across contrasts is necessary.•ANOVA followed by pairwise comparisons does not control the error rate in most cases.•Some well-known methods are conservative when a subset of the contrasts is tested.•Permutation performes well in all simulation scenarios.
The aim of this work was to evaluate the incorporation of a freeze-dried probiotic strain (
Lactobacillus plantarum
CIDCA 83114) into zeolites. The bacteria-zeolite mixture was added to poultry feed ...together with thyme, and the obtained product was stored for 60 days at 25 °C and 60–70% relative humidity. The ability of the obtained product to remove aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was studied. The highest bacterial viability was observed when 50% w/w bacteria were added to zeolites. The bacterial:zeolite mixtures were then incorporated into poultry feed containing or not thyme. Initial counts of
L. plantarum
were in the range of 1–2 × 10

CFU/g for all samples. In all cases, bacterial viability decreased one logarithmic order after 20 days of storage, and three logarithmic orders after 60 days. No significant viability loss was observed after exposure of the poultry feed to gastro-intestinal conditions. Freeze-dried
L. plantarum
and zeolite were able to remove AFB1, with an average reduction of 20 and 80%, respectively. Moreover, the freeze-dried bacteria-zeolite mixture was capable to remove up to 90% AFB1. This work contributes to enhance the nutritional quality of poultry feed, with a strong impact in production.
Autonomic neuropathy is a common and serious complication of diabetes. Early detection is essential to enable appropriate interventional therapy and management. Dynamic pupillometry has been proposed ...as a simpler and more sensitive tool to detect subclinical autonomic dysfunction. The aim of this study was to investigate pupil responsiveness in diabetic subjects with and without cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) using dynamic pupillometry in two sets of experiments.
During the first experiment, one flash was administered and the pupil response was recorded for 3 s. In the second experiment, 25 flashes at 1-s interval were administered and the pupil response was recorded for 30 s. Several time and pupil-iris radius-related parameters were computed from the acquired data. A total of 24 diabetic subjects (16 without and 8 with CAN) and 16 healthy volunteers took part in the study.
Our results show that diabetic subjects with and without CAN have sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunction, evidenced by diminished amplitude reflexes and significant smaller pupil radius. It suggests that pupillary autonomic dysfunction occurs before a more generalized involvement of the autonomic nervous system, and this could be used to detect early autonomic dysfunction.
Dynamic pupillometry provides a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive tool to screen high-risk diabetic patients for diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

MF is associated with an increased risk of heart failure, ...coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and death. Diabetes may influence the development of MF, but evidence is inconsistent.
The authors searched EMBASE, Medline Ovid, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for observational and interventional studies investigating the association of diabetes, glycemic control, and antidiabetic medication with MF assessed by histology and cardiac magnetic resonance (ie, extracellular volume fraction ECV% and T
time).
A total of 32 studies (88% exclusively on type 2 diabetes) involving 5,053 participants were included in the systematic review. Meta-analyses showed that diabetes was associated with a higher degree of MF assessed by histological collagen volume fraction (n = 6 studies; mean difference: 5.80; 95% CI: 2.00-9.59) and ECV% (13 studies; mean difference: 2.09; 95% CI: 0.92-3.27), but not by native or postcontrast T
time. Higher glycosylated hemoglobin levels were associated with higher degrees of MF.
Diabetes is associated with higher degree of MF assessed by histology and ECV% but not by T
time. In patients with diabetes, worse glycemic control was associated with higher MF degrees. These findings mostly apply to type 2 diabetes and warrant further investigation into whether these associations are causal and which medications could attenuate MF in patients with diabetes.

This study used a qualitative design based on twenty in-depth interviews of patients with cancer or caregivers of patients with the disease. The analysis of the text was based on an inductive thematic approach.
Resistance to disease and immune enhancement are properties attributed to Coragyps atratus when used for cancer treatment. The most recommended method of use is fresh blood ingestion, and the associated mechanism of action is transfer of immune factors to the individual who consumes it.
Use of Coragyps atratus as a treatment for cancer is a popular alternative therapy in Colombia. More studies are needed to understand the clinical effects of this intervention in cancer patients.
