Different flow characteristics namely sequent depth ratio, relative height of jump, relative energy loss, efficiency, relative length of jump and relative length of roller in suddenly expanding ...channel against inflow Froude number varying between 2 to 9 at different expansion ratios B1/B2 (0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.8) as third variable are experimentally studied. Physical explanations of the variation of these characteristics with Froude number are discussed based on the results from experiments. Empirical models are proposed for all the six characteristics for rectangular and suddenly expanding channels using Buckingham π-method which gives quite satisfactory results when compared with other researchers result. Effectiveness of baffle blocks and sills (with different configurations) were also discussed in dissipating maximum energy. Due weightage has been given to Froude and Reynold’s number in present study as reported literature as well. As a result, baffle block and sills caused a significant improvement in sequent depth ratio by an amount of 30%, reduction in relative length of jump ratio and relative length of the roller by an amount of 38% and 37% respectively. Hence, energy dissipation increases due to appurtenances.
A novel fiber Michelson interferometer (FMI) based on parallel dual polarization maintaining fiber Sagnac interferometers (PMF-SIs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for temperature ...sensing. The free spectral range (FSR) difference of dual PMF-SIs determines the FSR of envelope and sensitivity of the sensor. The temperature sensitivity of parallel dual PMF-SIs is greatly enhanced by the Vernier effect. Experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the proposed sensor is improved from -1.646 nm/°C (single PMF-SI) to 78.984 nm/°C (parallel dual PMF-SIs), with a magnification factor of 47.99, and the temperature resolution is improved from ±0.03037°C to ±0.00063°C by optimizing the FSR difference between the two PMF-SIs. Our proposed ultrasensitive temperature sensor is with easy fabrication, low cost and simple configuration which can be implemented for various real applications that need high precision temperature measurement.
In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy optimization and the provision of security are the major design challenges. Since the wireless sensor devices are energy constrained, the issue of high ...energy consumption by the malicious nodes must be addressed well in order to enhance the network performance by making increased network lifetime, reduced energy consumption and delay. In the past, many researchers worked in the provision of new techniques for providing improved security to WSN in order to enhance the reliability in the routing process. However, most of the existing routing techniques are not able to achieve the required security through the use of intelligent techniques for safeguarding the sensor nodes from malicious attacks. In order to address these problems, a new fuzzy temporal clustering-based secured communication model with trust analysis and outlier detection has been developed in this research work. For this purpose, a new fuzzy temporal rule-based cluster-based routing algorithm with trust modelling and outlier detection for monitoring the nodes participating in the communication has been proposed. In addition, a fuzzy temporal rule- and distance-based outlier detection algorithm is also proposed in this paper for distinguishing the malicious nodes from other nodes within each cluster of the network and has been used in the secured routing algorithm. The proposed secure routing algorithm uses the temporal reasoning tasks of explanation-based learning and prediction as well as spatial constraints for making efficient routing decisions through the application of trust and key management techniques for performing effective authentication of nodes and thereby isolating the malicious nodes from communication through outlier detection. By applying these two proposed algorithms for communication in the proposed work, it is proved through experiments that the proposed secure routing algorithm and the outlier detection algorithm are able to perform secured and reliable routing through genuine cluster head nodes more effectively. Moreover, these two algorithms provide improved quality of service with respect to the reliability of communication, packet delivery ratio, reduction in end-to-end delay and reduced energy consumption.
Mimicking nature using artificial technologies has always been a quest/fascination of scientists and researchers of all eras. This paper characterizes viscous fingering instability-based, ...lithography-less, spontaneous, and scalable process towards fabrication of 3D patterns like nature-inspired honeycomb structures with ultra-high aspect ratio walls. Rich experimental characterization data on volatile polymer solution evolution in a uniport lifted Hele-Shaw cell (ULHSC) is represented on a non-dimensional phase plot. The plot with five orders of magnitude variation of non-dimensional numbers on each axis demarcates the regions of several newly observed phenomena: 'No retention', 'Bridge breaking', and 'Wall formation' with 'stable' and 'unstable' interface evolution. A new non-dimensional ratio of the velocity of evaporating static interface versus lifting velocity is proposed for the same. This phase plot along with physical insights into the phenomena observed, pave pathways for extending the method to multiport LHSC (MLHSC) to demonstrate multiwell honeycomb structures. The work thus establishes a solid foundation with valuable insights for scalable manufacturing of devices useful for application in biomedical and other domains.
A novel, to the best of our knowledge, design of plastic optical fiber (POF) balloon-based refractive index sensor for the detection of different concentrations of sodium chloride is proposed and ...experimentally investigated. The experimental characterization supports the finding that the transmission loss is sensitive to the external environment's targeted refractive index changes of the analyte. The proposed sensor achieves a maximum intensity-based sensitivity of 3105 RIU
, resolution of 3.22 ×10
, and the figure of merit (FOM) is 326 RIU
from 2 to 2.5 Mol/L of the analyte with the chosen refractive index changes at 680 nm for a diameter D = 0.1 cm of the POF balloon structure. Furthermore, a high linear performance of 0.9896 is achieved with good robustness against the fabrication imperfection. The ultra-sensitiveness to the refractive index with a simple demonstration of the POF balloon-based structure has potential applications in the chemical, biological, and food safety sensing fields.
Heparanase has been viewed as a promising anti-cancer drug target for almost two decades, but no anti-heparanase therapy has yet reached the clinic. This endoglycosidase is highly expressed in a ...variety of malignancies, and its high expression is associated with greater tumor size, more metastases, and a poor prognosis. It was first described as an enzyme cleaving heparan sulfate chains of proteoglycans located in extracellular matrices and on cell surfaces, but this is not its only function. It is a multi-functional protein with activities that are enzymatic and non-enzymatic and which take place both outside of the cell and intracellularly. Knowledge of the crystal structure of heparanase has assisted the interpretation of earlier structure-function studies as well as in the design of potential anti-heparanase agents. This review re-examines the various functions of heparanase in light of the structural data. The functions of the heparanase variant, T5, and structure and functions of heparanase-2 are also examined as these heparanase related, but non-enzymatic, proteins are likely to influence the
efficacy of anti-heparanase drugs. The anti-heparanase drugs currently under development predominately focus on inhibiting the enzymatic activity of heparanase, which, in the absence of inhibitors with high clinical efficacy, prompts a discussion of whether this is the best approach. The diversity of outcomes attributed to heparanase and the difficulties of unequivocally determining which of these are due to its enzymatic activity is also discussed and leads us to the conclusion that heparanase is a valid, but challenging drug target for cancer.
Background
To date, a systematic review of the evidence regarding the association between vitamin D and allergic diseases development has not yet been undertaken.
Objective
To review the efficacy and ...safety of vitamin D supplementation when compared to no supplementation in pregnant women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children for the prevention of allergies.
Methods
Three databases were searched through January 30, 2016, including randomized (RCT) and nonrandomized studies (NRS). Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed the certainty in the body of evidence using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) approach.
Results
Among the 1932 articles identified, one RCT and four NRS were eligible. Very low certainty in the body of evidence across examined studies suggests that vitamin D supplementation for pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants may not decrease the risk of developing allergic diseases such as atopic dermatitis (in pregnant women), allergic rhinitis (in pregnant women and infants), asthma and/or wheezing (in pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants), or food allergies (in pregnant women). We found no studies of primary prevention of allergic diseases in children.
Conclusion
Limited information is available addressing primary prevention of allergic diseases after vitamin D supplementation, and its potential impact remains uncertain.
ABSTRACT
We present an optical transmission spectrum for WASP-94A b, the first atmospheric characterization of this highly-inflated hot Jupiter. The planet has a reported radius of ...$1.72^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$ RJup, a mass of only $0.456^{+0.032}_{-0.036}$ MJup, and an equilibrium temperature of 1508 ± 75 K. We observed the planet transit spectroscopically with the EFOSC2 instrument on the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT) at La Silla, Chile: the first use of NTT/EFOSC2 for transmission spectroscopy. We achieved an average transit-depth precision of 128 ppm for bin widths of ∼200 Å. This high precision was achieved in part by linking Gaussian Process hyperparameters across all wavelength bins. The resulting transmission spectrum, spanning a wavelength range of 3800–7140 Å, exhibits a sodium absorption with a significance of 4.9σ, suggesting a relatively cloud-free atmosphere. The sodium signal may be broadened, with a best-fitting width of $78_{-32}^{+67}$ Å in contrast to the instrumental resolution of 27.2 ± 0.2 Å. We also detect a steep slope in the blue end of the transmission spectrum, indicating the presence of Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere of WASP-94A b. Retrieval models show evidence for the observed slope to be super-Rayleigh and potential causes are discussed. Finally, we find narrow absorption cores in the CaII H&K lines of WASP-94A, suggesting the star is enshrouded in gas escaping the hot Jupiter.
The pursuit of mimicking complex multiscale systems has been a tireless effort with many successes but a daunting task ahead. A new perspective to engineer complex cross-linked meshes and ...branched/tree-like structures at different scales is presented here. Control over Saffman-Taylor instability which otherwise randomly rearranges viscous fluid in a 'lifted Hele-Shaw cell' is proposed for the same. The proposed control employs multiple-ports or source-holes in this cell, to spontaneously shape a stretched fluid film into a network of well defined webs/meshes and ordered multiscale tree-like patterns. Use of multiple ports enables exercising strong control to fabricate such structures, in a robust and repeated fashion, which otherwise are completely non-characteristic to viscous fingering process. The proposed technique is capable of fabricating spontaneously families of wide variety of structures over micro and very large scale in a period of few seconds. Thus the proposed method forms a solid foundation to new pathways for engineering multiscale structures for several scientific applications including efficient gas exchange, heat transport, tissue engineering, organ-on-chip, and so on. Proposal of multi-port Hele-Shaw cell also opens new avenues for investigation of complex multiple finger interactions resulting in interesting fluid patterns.
