Physical adsorption-based processes such as pressure swing adsorption (PSA) constitute an alternative to selectively adsorb CO2 from biogas streams. There is abundant work regarding the equilibrium ...of adsorption of pure CH4 and CO2 on different adsorbents. However, to design an adsorption process with a selected adsorbent it is very important to account for its dynamic behavior in a packed-bed. Thus, the performance of two biomass-based activated carbons (CS-CO2 and CS-H2O) previously prepared in our laboratory to separate CO2/CH4 has been evaluated. Full adsorption–desorption cycles were conducted at 30 °C (isothermal conditions) and different pressures (1, 3, 5, and 10 bar) feeding binary CO2/CH4 (50/50 vol %) mixtures to a purpose-built fixed-bed setup. A commercial activated carbon, Calgon BPL, was also evaluated for reference purposes. CO2 equilibrium uptakes were obtained from dynamic breakthrough curves and proved to be maximum at 10 bar (5.14, 4.48, and 4.14 mol kg–1 for CS-CO2, CS-H2O, and Calgon BPL, respectively). However, the CO2/CH4 separation efficiency, according to the difference in breakthrough times between CH4 and CO2, is very limited at 10 bar. A combined analysis of the productivity and purity of CH4 along with CO2 working capacity derived from dynamic experiments indicates that our biomass-based activated carbons would be better candidate materials for the CO2/CH4 separation at a pressure of 5 bar than the commercial activated carbon Calgon BPL.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of different bran extracts and concentrations, and their influence on the parameters of a mayonnaise-type emulsion. To that end, first ethanol and then water were used to extract two rice bran extracts (RBE) from rice bran. Both these extracts were then added at two different concentrations (0.5 and 2%) to the emulsions that were subsequently analysed after seven days under two different storage temperatures, 4 °C and 20 °C. The antioxidant and antimicrobial ability of the extracts were evaluated, along with a control and a synthetic antioxidant. Results indicate the positive effect of rice bran extracts as additives in the food matrix. Ethanolic rice bran extract (EE) at 2% decreased the oxidation as well as mould and yeast proliferation and preserved the emulsion structure, while the other treatments acted in a similar way although their effect was less pronounced.
Renewable clean H2 has a very promising potential for the decarbonization of energy systems. Sorption enhanced steam reforming (SESR) is a novel process that combines the steam reforming reaction and ...the simultaneous CO2 removal by a solid sorbent, such as CaO, which significantly enhances hydrogen generation, enabling high-purity H2 production. The CO2 sorption reaction (carbonation) is exothermic, but the sorbent regeneration by calcination is highly endothermic, which requires extra energy. Biogas is one of the available carbon-neutral renewable H2 production sources. It can be especially relevant for the energy integration of the SESR process since, due to the exothermic sorption reaction, the CO2 contained in the biogas provides extra heat to the system, which can help to balance the energy requirements of the process. This work studies different process configurations for the energy integration of the SESR process of biogas for high-purity renewable H2 production: (1) SESR with sorbent regeneration using a portion of the produced H2 (SESR+REG_H2), (2) SESR with sorbent regeneration using biogas (SESR+REG_BG), and (3) SESR with sorbent regeneration using biogas and adding a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) unit for hydrogen purification (SESR+REG_BG+PSA). When using biogas as fuel (Cases 2 and 3), these configurations were studied using air and oxy-fuel combustion atmospheres in the sorbent regeneration step, resulting in five case studies. A thermodynamic approach for process modeling can provide the optimal process operating conditions and configurations that maximize the energy efficiency of the process, which are the basis for subsequent optimization of the process at the practical level needed to scale up this technology. For this purpose, process simulations were performed using a steady-state plant model developed in Aspen Plus, incorporating a complex heat exchanger network (HEN) to optimize heat integration. A comprehensive parametric study assessed the effects of biogas composition, temperature, pressure, and steam to methane (S/CH4) ratio on the process performance represented by the selected key performance indicators, i.e., H2 purity, H2 yield, CH4 conversion, cold gas efficiency (CGE), net efficiency (NE), fuel consumption for the sorbent regeneration step, and CO2 capture efficiency. H2 with a purity of 98.5 vol % and a CGE of 75.7% with zero carbon emissions can be achieved. When adding a PSA unit, nearly 100% H2 purity and CO2 capture efficiency were achieved with a CGE of 77.3%. The use of oxy-fuel combustion during regeneration lowered the net efficiency of the process by 2.3% points (since it requires an air separation unit) but allowed the process to achieve negative carbon emissions.

The wide occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments urges the development of cost-effective solutions for their removal from water. In a circular economy context, primary paper mill sludge (PS) was used to produce activated carbon (AC) aiming the adsorptive removal of these contaminants. The use of low-cost precursors for the preparation of ACs capable of competing with commercial ACs continues to be a challenge. A full factorial design of four factors (pyrolysis temperature, residence time, precursor/activating agent ratio, and type of activating agent) at two levels was applied to the production of AC using PS as precursor. The responses analysed were the yield of production, percentage of adsorption for three pharmaceuticals (sulfamethoxazole, carbamazepine, and paroxetine), specific surface area (SBET), and total organic carbon (TOC). Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate influencing factors in the responses and to determine the most favourable production conditions. Four ACs presented very good responses, namely on the adsorption of the pharmaceuticals under study (average adsorption percentage around 78%, which is above that of commercial AC), and SBET between 1389 and 1627 m2 g−1. A desirability analysis pointed out 800 °C for 60 min and a precursor/KOH ratio of 1:1 (w/w) as the optimal production conditions.
It has been proposed that lipid oxidation reactions in edible oils primarily occur in reverse micelles (RM) of amphiphilic components. While the prooxidative effect of RM has been demonstrated, the ...mechanism involved is not fully understood. Both reductions and enhancements in the antioxidant efficacy (AE) of α-tocopherol and Trolox have been observed in different studies when phosphatidylcholine (PC) was added and PC RM were formed. However, most of these investigations employed lipid systems consisting of stripped vegetable oil diluted in saturated medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCT) and utilized antioxidant concentrations well below those found in edible oils. These two specific factors were investigated in the present study. The effect of RM of purified egg yolk PC on the AE of 1.16 mmol kg−1 α-tocopherol or Trolox in stripped sunflower oil (SSO) was studied by the Rancimat (100 °C) and oven (50 °C) tests. Increasing PC concentrations (50–1000 ppm) had no significant impact on α-tocopherol, but substantial reductions in AE were observed for Trolox. This phenomenon may be attributed to the partitioning of Trolox into the pre-existing PC micelles, suggesting that primary oxidation reactions occurred in the continuous lipid phase. In addition, the effectiveness of both antioxidants decreased significantly in the presence of PC when a low antioxidant concentration (0.06 mmol kg−1) was assayed in SSO:MCT (1:3, w/w).

This work describes the production of alternative adsorbents from industrial residues and their application for the removal of a highly consumed antidepressant (citalopram) from water. The adsorbents were produced by pyrolysis of both primary and biological paper mill sludge at different temperatures and residence times. The original sludge and the produced chars were fully characterized by elemental and proximate analyses, total organic carbon, specific surface area (BET), N2 isotherms, FTIR, 13C and 1H solid state NMR and SEM. Batch kinetic and equilibrium experiments were carried out to describe the adsorption of citalopram onto the produced materials. The fastest kinetics and the highest adsorption capacity were obtained using primary sludge pyrolysed at 800°C during 150min. The use of pyrolysed paper mill sludge for the remediation of contaminated waters might constitute an interesting application for the valorization of those wastes.
The fermentation of syngas is an attractive technology that can be integrated with gasification of lignocellulosic biomass. The coupling of these two technologies allows for treating a great variety ...of raw materials. Lignin usually hinders microbial fermentations; thus, the thermal decomposition of the whole material into small molecules allows for the production of fuels and other types of molecules using syngas as substrate, a process performed at mild conditions. Syngas contains mainly hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide in varying proportions. These gases have a low volumetric energy density, resulting in a more interesting conversion into higher energy density molecules. Syngas can be transformed by microorganisms, thus avoiding the use of expensive catalysts, which may be subject to poisoning. However, the fermentation is not free of suffering from inhibitory problems. The presence of trace components in syngas may cause a decrease in fermentation yields or cause a complete cessation of bacteria growth. The presence of tar and hydrogen cyanide are just examples of this fermentation’s challenges. Syngas cleaning impairs significant restrictions in technology deployment. The technology may seem promising, but it is still far from large-scale application due to several aspects that still need to find a practical solution.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship strategies has been recommended. This study aimed to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in a tertiary care ...Spanish hospital with an active ongoing antimicrobial stewardship programme (ASP). For a 20-week period, we weekly assessed antimicrobial consumption, incidence density, and crude death rate per 1000 occupied bed days of candidemia and multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial bloodstream infections (BSI). We conducted a segmented regression analysis of time series. Antimicrobial consumption increased +3.5% per week (p = 0.016) for six weeks after the national lockdown, followed by a sustained weekly reduction of −6.4% (p = 0.001). The global trend for the whole period was stable. The frequency of empirical treatment of patients with COVID-19 was 33.7%. No change in the global trend of incidence of hospital-acquired candidemia and MDR bacterial BSI was observed (+0.5% weekly; p = 0.816), nor differences in 14 and 30-day crude death rates (p = 0.653 and p = 0.732, respectively). Our work provides quantitative data about the pandemic effect on antimicrobial consumption and clinical outcomes in a centre with an active ongoing institutional and education-based ASP. However, assessing the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial resistance is required.
This study explored the feasibility of a bundle of indicators aimed at assessing the quality of antimicrobial use in intensive care units (ICUs) through an observational prospective study spanning 12 ...quarters (January 2019–December 2021) in a 1290-bed teaching hospital in Spain. Members of the antimicrobial stewardship programme team selected the indicators to analyse the quality of antimicrobial use based on consumption data from a list proposed in a previous study. Antimicrobial use in the ICU was measured as defined daily dose (DDD) per 100 occupied bed-days. Trends and points of change were analysed with segmented regression. The intravenous macrolides/intravenous respiratory fluoroquinolones ratio in the ICU increased progressively, although not significantly, by 11.14% per quarter, likely related to prioritization of the use of macrolides in serious community-acquired pneumonia and the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. A remarkable upward trend of 2.5% per quarter was detected in the anti-methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus/anti-methicillin-resistant S. aureus agents ratio in the ICU, which could be explained by the low prevalence of methicillin-resistant S. aureus at the study centre. Patterns of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid/piperacillin-tazobactam ratio and diversification of anti-pseudomonal beta-lactams showed an increment in use over the study. The use of these novel indicators provides additional information for the current analysis of DDD. Implementation is feasible, and led to the detection of patterns that agree with local guidelines and cumulative antibiogram reports, and foster targeted improvement actions within antimicrobial stewardship programmes.
