During the last decade, six new superheavy elements were added into the seventh period of the periodic table, with the approval of their names and symbols. This milestone was followed by proclaiming ...2019 the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements by the United Nations General Assembly. According to theory, due to their large atomic numbers, the new arrivals are expected to be qualitatively and quantitatively different from lighter species. The questions pertaining to superheavy atoms and nuclei are in the forefront of research in nuclear and atomic physics and chemistry. This Colloquium offers a broad perspective on the field and outlines future challenges.
Compared to controlled laboratory settings, the real world is highly distracting with constant demands on visual attention to avoid hazards and falling. Fall-risk assessments do not adequately take ...into account the potential role of everyday distractions and environmental hazards. The purpose of this project was to identify the effect of the environment on gait and gaze behavior during walking in older adult fallers relative to non-fallers.
Thirteen older adult fallers (76.8±9.4 years, 3.2±2.3 falls in last year) and 13 age-matched non-fallers (78.3±7.3 years, 0 falls in last year) participated. Participants walked in a real-world and lab setting while gait and gaze were recorded. Gait variables were stride length variability, stride duration variability, and stride velocity. Gaze was analyzed for percentage of time fixating and average fixation duration coded across 6 areas of interest (AOIs) in the visual surroundings.
Non-fallers walked faster than fallers, but there were no other group or environment effects on gait. For gaze behavior, fallers had shorter fixation durations on the near environment than non-fallers, but only in the real world. In the real world relative to the lab, fallers decreased fixation durations on the near environment but increased durations on near people. In the real world, participants spent a greater proportion of time fixating on people than on the walking path or the near environment compared to the lab. After adjusting for baseline gait speed, fallers had shorter fixation durations than non-fallers in both environments.
Our results indicate that in a busy environment, older adults concentrate most of their overt visual attention on people when navigating their walking path. Fallers in particular focus longer on people near to them and have overall shorter fixations than non-fallers. Visual focus while walking in a busy environment should be further explored as a fall-risk factor.
Context. A multiwavelength study of laboratory carbons with varying degrees of hydrogenation and sp2 hybridization is required to characterize the structure of the carbonaceous carriers of ...interstellar and circumstellar extinction. Aims. We study the spectral properties of carbonaceous dust analogs from the far-ultraviolet to the mid-infrared and correlate features in both spectral ranges to the aromatic/aliphatic degree. Methods. Analogs to carbonaceous interstellar dust encountered in various phases of the interstellar medium have been prepared in the laboratory. These are amorphous hydrogenated carbons (a-C:H), analogs to the diffuse interstellar medium component, and soot particles, analogs to the polyaromatic component. Thin films (d < 100 nm) have been measured in transmission in the vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV; 120–210 nm) within the atmospheric pressure experiment (APEX) chamber of the DISCO beam line at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility. Spectra of these films were further measured through the UV-Vis (210 nm–1 μm) and in the mid-infrared (3–15 μm). Results. Tauc optical gaps, Eg, are derived from the visible spectra. The major spectral features are fitted through the VUV to the mid-infrared to obtain positions, full-widths at half maximum (FWHM), and integrated intensities. These are plotted against the position of the π-π∗ electronic transitions peak. Unidentified or overlapping features in the UV are identified by correlations with complementary infrared data. A correlation between the optical gap and position of the π-π∗ electronic transitions peak is found. The latter is also correlated to the position of the sp3 carbon defect band at ~8 μm, the aromatic C=C stretching mode position at ~6 μm, and the H/C ratio. Conclusions. Ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy of structurally diverse carbon samples are used to constrain the nanostructural properties of carbon carriers of both circumstellar and interstellar extinction, such as the associated coherent lengths and the size of polyaromatic units. Our study suggests that carriers of the interstellar UV bump should exhibit infrared bands akin to the A/B classes of the aromatic infrared bands, while the circumstellar bump carriers should exhibit bands corresponding to the B/C classes.

As a part of interstellar dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are processed by the interaction with vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) photons that are emitted by hot young stars. This interaction ...leads to the emission of the well-known aromatic infrared bands but also of electrons, which can significantly contribute to the heating of the interstellar gas.
Our aim is to investigate the impact of molecular size on the photoionization properties of cationic PAHs.
Trapped PAH cations of sizes between 30 and 48 carbon atoms were submitted to VUV photons in the range of 9 to 20 eV from the DESIRS beamline at the synchrotron SOLEIL. All resulting photoproducts including dications and fragment cations were mass-analyzed and recorded as a function of photon energy.
Photoionization is found to be predominant over dissociation at all energies, which differs from an earlier study on smaller PAHs. The photoionization branching ratio reaches 0.98 at 20 eV for the largest studied PAH. The photoionization threshold is observed to be between 9.1 and 10.2 eV, in agreement with the evolution of the ionization potential with size. Ionization cross sections were indirectly obtained and photoionization yields extracted from their ratio with theoretical photoabsorption cross sections, which were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. An analytical function was derived to calculate this yield for a given molecular size.
Large PAH cations could be efficiently ionized in H i regions and provide a contribution to the heating of the gas by photoelectric effect. Also, at the border of or in H ii regions, PAHs could be exposed to photons of energy higher than 13.6 eV. Our work provides recipes to be used in astronomical models to quantify these points.
We present the first Ge-based constraints on sub-MeV /c2 dark matter (DM) particles interacting with electrons using a 33.4 g Ge cryogenic detector with a 0.53 electron-hole pair (rms) resolution, ...operated underground at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. Competitive constraints are set on the DM-electron scattering cross section, as well as on the kinetic mixing parameter of dark photons down to 1 eV / c2. In particular, the most stringent limits are set for dark photon DM in the 6 to 9 eV / c2 range. These results demonstrate the high relevance of Ge cryogenic detectors for the search of DM-induced eV-scale electron signals.
Everyday walking often involves simultaneous performance of a cognitive task in environments with competing auditory and visual stimuli. Previous research has not evaluated task performance in these ...situations, where older adults are known to fall, limiting our understanding of how older adults adjust their gait, visual scanning (gaze), and cognitive processing to avoid falls (or not). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of dual-task walking in a high-distraction real-world environment on cognitive performance, gait performance, and gaze behavior in older adult fallers relative to non-fallers.
Fourteen community-dwelling, older adult fallers (76.6 ± 9.1 years, 11 females) and 15 community-dwelling, older adult non-fallers (77.4 ± 7.6 years, 11 females) participated. Participants performed single-task walking, single-task cognitive (seated category naming), and dual-task walking (category naming + walking) trials for 1 min each in a real-world environment (busy hospital lobby). Gait speed, stride length variability, stride duration variability, gaze fixation duration on 6 areas of interest (AOIs), and percentage of time fixating on 6 AOIs were recorded during single- and dual-task walking trials. Number of correct responses, time to first response, and mean subsequent response time (measure of rate of decline of response retrieval throughout trial) were determined for single-task cognitive and dual-task walking trials. Two-way MANCOVAs and MANOVAs were used to compare the effects of fall status and task condition on gait and cognitive variables. Hierarchical linear regression models were used to assess predictors of gaze behavior variables.
Compared to single-task, during dual-task trials, participants walked 0.21 m/s slower, had 1.5 fewer verbal responses, and a 2823 ms shorter mean subsequent response time, indicating a faster declining rate of retrieval during the cognitive task. Additionally, during dual-task walking, participants fixated their gaze on Far People (AOI) for a significantly smaller percentage of time and on the Near Walking Path (AOI) for a significantly greater percentage of time than during single-task walking. During all trials, being a non-faller predicted a longer average fixation duration on the Far Environment (AOI) than for fallers. Environmental busyness, baseline gait speed, and baseline executive function impacted gaze behavior.
All participants exhibited dual-task decrements in gait and cognitive performance and changes in gaze behavior from single- to dual-task walking. Perhaps of more importance, non-fallers appear to have had more freedom to divert their gaze to less relevant environmental stimuli while walking, and two measures of fall risk impacted patterns of gaze behavior differently. Thus, overt visual attention during walking in real-world environments should be further explored in relation to fall risk.
