The topic of this article is the social differentiation in Istria from the Early to Late Bronze Age. Three relevant areas from the research of the fortified settlement of Monkodonja are addressed. ...Firstly, the differences in structure and architecture within the settlement are described. Secondly, districts of power in Rovinj are elaborated as a system of central Istrian settlements, equal in stature, with auxiliary and satellite areas. The small units, barely larger than 10 km, are separated from one another by unsettled, yet probably economically exploited spaces. Thirdly, the few elite graves, which are characterized more by their distinguished position in the main gate of the settlement than by their grave goods, are discussed. The complicated, multiphase burial ritual is described and the cists integrated in the structure are considered in relation to ancestral worship. Publication Abstract
The enclosed settlement from the developed Early and Middle Bronze Age of Monkodonja near Rovinj in Istria has been the subject of previous reports and poses a number of dating problems. The ...numerous, but mostly very fragmented, pottery finds have a distinctively local form and are not particularly helpful in narrowing down the chronological time frame. For this reason, a series of 21 14C-datings was performed in the "Leibniz" Laboratory for Age Determination in Kiel, Germany. With this data, a picture could be gained of the enclosure as it changed over the course of several rebuilding and construction phases behind the walls. All data samples for the AMS measurements were carried out on animal and human bones. According to the measurements, the hill was first used in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, although no traces of settlement were left behind. The last uses of the central settlement area date back to the time around 1000 BC. Abridged Publication Abstract
Burial mounds in the Region of Istria in the northern Adriatic have long been known but few of them have been excavated in the modern period. Interestingly, they are of different types, in regard to ...the manner of burial as well as kind of the stone-construction. One of them, on the hilltop of Maklavun, has the characteristics of a tholos. Its dating to the Middle Bronze Age is reasonably certain. The question arises whether the tholos, the form of which has rarely been found outside Greece, was built after prototypes from the Mycenaean world.

Thirteen stone tumuli have been documented to date on the Mušego-Mon Sego hill in the vicinity of Rovinj, which we consider to be an integral part of a necropolis belonging to the Bronze Age ...fortified hillfort settlement of Monkodonja-Moncodogno, located on the neighbouring north eastern hill. Tumuli nos. 6 and 7 were explored during 2006 and 2007. Systematic excavations gave significant new results, especially concerning architecture, despite the fact that both of them had been rummaged and hence damaged by the activities of “hidden treasure” hunters. Both tumuli were erected in a particular way, differing not only from one another but also from the monuments of this type which have already been excavated in the territory of Istria.
