ABSTRACT
This contribution analyses texts written by the descendants of Holocaust survivors and former refugees who have contributed to the newsletter of the Second Generation Network based in ...Britain. Examination of this material demonstrates how these postmemory trauma narratives add to our understanding of Holocaust and Refugee Studies. The ongoing impact of the Holocaust on subsequent generations descended from survivors and refugees suggests that it should be considered an integral part of British history that continues to reverberate in twenty‐first century society in the UK.

Dieser Beitrag analysiert die Texte von Nachfahren Holocaust‐Überlebender und ehemaliger Flüchtlinge, die diese für den Nachrichtenbrief des Second Generation Network schrieben. Das Material zeigt, wie eine Untersuchung dieser Postmemory Trauma‐Narrative zu unserem Verständnis des Holocaust und der Flüchtlingsgeschichte beiträgt. Die anhaltende Auswirkung des Holocaust auf die Kinder und Enkel von Überlebenden und ehemaligen Flüchtlingen macht deutlich, dass das Ereignis ein wesentlicher Teil der Geschichte Großbritanniens ist und nachhaltige Konsequenzen für die britische Gesellschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts hat.
The memories of the child refugees who fled Central Europe on the so-called Kindertransport between December 1938 and September 1939 are the most widely documented of any refugee and migrant group to ...come the United Kingdom. However, the dominant narrative has been one of migration to and settling in England, despite the fact that the child refugees settled in places across the British Isles, including Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland—the last of which, for example, received an estimated eight hundred Kindertransportees. This essay will investigate how former Kindertransportees negotiate their different identities in their memory narratives. The majority of the Kindertransportees were Jewish, although approximately 20 percent came from families that did not identify as Jewish but were persecuted as Jews. Therefore, there is a complicated interplay of religious identities, those derived from the country the child refugees were leaving behind and those of the country and the nations of settlement. This article will compare those narratives that construct non-English identity as Other, those that adopt separate national identities in the Diaspora with earlier definitions of Englishness versus Britishness, and others that adopt a center/margin hierarchy common in British culture.
Abstract
This article focuses on two novels written by Austrian-born Jewish women writers who were forced into exile in Britain by the National Socialists: Anna Gmeyner's Café du Dôme and Martina ...Wied's Das Krähennest. The article discusses the innovative features of both works, such as different levels of reality, the doppelgänger motif, and performativity, as well as how these fit in with expanding definitions of modernisms.

This essay uses several autobiographical texts by former members of the Kindertransporte to discuss the tension between institutional history and personal life stories in relation to a number of ...issues present in these texts. Authenticity, group identity, the cultural construct of the 'child' concept and the fragmented self are examined within the framework of Holocaust memoir writing and cultural and autobiographical theory. The essay argues for a multidimensional analysis of such autobiographical texts to reach a wider audience within and outside Holocaust studies.
