Arbutus unedo
Arbutus unedo also known as the strawberry tree is an evergreen shrub very appreciated in the Mediterranean area, however, it is still considered as an underexploited tree. Due to its various benefits, ethnobotanicals, chemists, nutritionists and anthropologists are more and more interested in it. It belongs to Erecaceae family and it is abundant, especially all over the Mediterranean sea and in other hotsummer and rainy-winter areas. In a bibliographic and an ethnobotanic study of the strawberry tree, we are going to briefly present the shrub, enumerate its different parts pharmacological properties and its operational fields. In traditional medicine, the fruits are used as antiseptics, diuretics and laxatives and the leaves are known by their diuretics, urinary antiseptics, antidiarrheal, astringent, depurative and antihypertensive properties. The high pharmacological potential was demonstrated by different Arbutus unedo extracts analysis, which provide it with its antidiarrheal, astringent, depurative and antihypertensive properties antifungal, antiparasitic, antiaggregant, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, antiinflammatory, antitumoral, antioxidant, and spasmolytic properties. Indeed, fruits, leaves and roots composition of this shrub reveals a promising basis as a phytopharmaceutical product and must motivate researchers to enhance their studies in order to develop innovative drugs.

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a valuable fiber and medicinal plant from the Malvaceae family. It is an alternative crop that may be a feasible source of cellulose which is economically viable and ...ecologically friendly. This plant is cultivated for its fiber although its leaves and seeds have also been used in traditional medicine in India and Africa for the treatment of various disease conditions. Kenaf fibers are commonly used for paper pulp and cordage, but it is also a promising lignocellulosic feedstock for bioenergy production. The kenaf seed oil can be used for cooking and in different industrial applications. The present paper is an overview on its ethnobotanical and phytochemical properties reported in the literature that we have investigated and its great potential as a valuable multipurpose crop due to numerous uses.
Melaleuca styphelioides is considered as medicinal plant. This study was carried out to evaluate for the first time the phytochemical composition and to compare the antifungal activities of essential ...oil (EOs), methanol and aqueous extracts of M. styphelioides Sm. leaves against three fungi (Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus nigricans and Penicillium digitatum). A total of 10 components of the EO were identified, with the principal compound being methyl eugenol (87.2%). Results of the phytochemical analysis of leaves extract exhibited the presence of different phytoconstituents (phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins and anthocyanins). Volatile and non-volatile extracts were found to express dose-dependent inhibition against all tested fungi. Indeed, the EO oil showed significant inhibition of fungal growth and the IC
50
was 2.08 µL/mL for A. niger indicating that M. styphelioides leaf EO was particularly effective against this pathogen. The most susceptible species for the aqueous extract was P. digitatum (IC
50
= 9.54 mg/mL) whereas R. nigricans was found to be more susceptible to the methanolic extract (IC
50
= 8.31 mg/mL). Thus, the EO and aqueous as well as methanol extracts of M. styphelioides leaves possess antifungal activity and hence, it can be suggested for use in the food or pharmaceutical industries as an alternative to chemical preservatives.
Our study is about the essential oil of Citrus aurantium L. in Tunisia and its plant extract. The yield of this essential oil is 0, 56% but the yield of the extract of plant was 17.1% for the aqueous ...extract ant 18.3% for the ethanolic extract. The analysis of chemical composition by using GC and GC/MS showed the essential oil of C. aurantium L. species to be rich in monoterpenes such as α-terpineol, lianolyl acetate, linalool and limonene. The antifungal activity of this oil showed us an inhibition of the germination of mushrooms, in the same way we could note that the biologic activities are generally assigned to the chemotypes high content in oxygenated monoterpene.
Portulaca oleracea
Portulaca oleracea
L., purslane, was well-known in the classical world for its multiple uses. Purslane produces capsules containing several small seeds invested by a robust integument; the seeds are usually well preserved and frequently occur in archaeological sites in the Emilia Romagna Region, since the Bronze Age: they are easy to identify, due to their particular morphology. Purslane is currently considered very attractive from a food point of view, so much that it is included in the list of World Economic Plants. It is used in many cuisines around the world, especially in salads, soups, stews, and tomato sauces. When cooked, purslane becomes mucilaginous, and will act as a thickener in soups or stews. In Greece, the leaves are fried in olive oil, and then mixed with feta cheese, tomato, onion, garlic, and oregano. The seeds are also edible.
