A genome‐wide association study (GWAS) is a powerful tool in investigating genetic contribution, which is a crucial factor in the development of complex multifactorial diseases, such as type 2 ...diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major healthcare burden in the Western Pacific region; however, there is limited availability of genetic‐associated data for type 2 diabetes in Southeast Asia, especially among the Kinh Vietnamese population. This lack of information exacerbates global healthcare disparities. In this study, 997 Kinh Vietnamese individuals (503 with type 2 diabetes and 494 controls) were prospectively recruited and their clinical and paraclinical information was recorded. DNA samples were collected and whole genome genotyping was performed. Standard quality control and genetic imputation using the 1000 Genomes database were executed. A polygenic risk score for type 2 diabetes was generated in different models using East Asian, European, and mix ancestry GWAS summary statistics as training datasets. After quality control and genetic imputation, 107 polymorphisms reached suggestive statistical significance for GWAS (≤5 × 10−6) and rs11079784 was one of the potential markers strongly associated with type 2 diabetes in the studied population. The best polygenic risk score model predicting type 2 diabetes mellitus had AUC = 0.70 (95% confidence interval = 0.62–0.77) based on a mix of ancestral GWAS summary statistics. These data show promising results for genetic association with a polygenic risk score estimation in the Kinh Vietnamese population; the results also highlight the essential role of population diversity in a GWAS of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with T2DM and MetS in a Kinh Vietnamese population were investigated.
A study with 768 subjects was conducted to examine the associations of four
SNPs (rs266729, rs1501299, rs3774261, and rs822393) primarily with T2DM and secondarily with MetS. The TaqMan SNP genotyping assay was used to determine genotypes from subjects' DNA samples.
After statistical adjustment for age, sex, and body mass index, the
SNP rs266729 was found to be associated with increased risk of T2DM under multiple inheritance models: codominant (OR = 2.30, 95% CI = 1.16-4.58), recessive (OR = 2.17, 95% CI = 1.11-4.26), and log-additive (OR = 1.32, 95% CI = 1.02-1.70). However, rs1501299, rs3774261, and rs822393 were not associated with risk for T2DM. Additionally, rs266729, rs3774261, and rs822393 were statistically associated with MetS, while rs1501299 was not. Haplotype analysis showed a strong linkage disequilibrium between the SNP pairs rs266729/rs822393 and rs1501299/rs3774261, and the haplotype rs266729(G)/rs822393(T) was not statistically associated with MetS.
The results show that rs266729 is a lead candidate SNP associated with increased risk of developing T2DM and MetS in a Kinh Vietnamese population, while rs3774261 is associated with MetS only. Further functional characterization is needed to uncover the mechanism underlying the potential genotype-phenotype associations.
This paper explores the impact of different distance metrics on collinearity in local regression models such as geographically weighted regression. Using a case study of house price data collected in ...Hà Nội, Vietnam, and by fully varying both power and rotation parameters to create different Minkowski distances, the analysis shows that local collinearity can be both negatively and positively affected by distance metric choice. The Minkowski distance that maximised collinearity in a geographically weighted regression was approximate to a Manhattan distance with (power = 0.70) with a rotation of 30°, and that which minimised collinearity was parameterised with power = 0.05 and a rotation of 70°. The results indicate that distance metric choice can provide a useful extra tuning component to address local collinearity issues in spatially varying coefficient modelling and that understanding the interaction of distance metric and collinearity can provide insight into the nature and structure of the data relationships. The discussion considers first, the exploration and selection of different distance metrics to minimise collinearity as an alternative to localised ridge regression, lasso and elastic net approaches. Second, it discusses the how distance metric choice could extend the methods that additionally optimise local model fit (lasso and elastic net) by selecting a distance metric that further helped minimise local collinearity. Third, it identifies the need to investigate the relationship between kernel bandwidth, distance metrics and collinearity as an area of further work.
Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are observed in different industries including the services, where the impressive changing pace is boosted by the technological advances in AI. The use of AI ...in the daily work of individuals and in shaping the relationship between firms and customers has resulted in increased efficiency and a higher degree of fascination in interaction. There are, however, customers' fears related to the use of AI. Therefore, understanding how AI affects customer trust is worth investigating. This study focuses on the AI applications and their impact on communication quality and customer trust. The features of AI applications investigated in this study include anthropomorphism, empathy response and interaction. A model was first empirically validated through Confirmatory Factor Analysis and tested using Covariance‐Based Structural Equation Modelling. Data were then collected from a survey of 507 customers of two banks and two big telecommunication firms in Vietnam. Empirical results indicate that anthropomorphism and interaction do not play critical roles in generating customer trust in AI unless they create communication quality with customers. The ability of empathy response makes customers trust in various service situations. AI application seems to be a good solution for service firms to enhance their relationship with customers in difficult circumstances, including a pandemic crisis. This study delivers implications for enhancing AI adoption in the service firms that intend to innovate their future operations.
Background:
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac death in adults.HCM is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner; however, the genetic etiology of the ...disease is not fully explained and studies on the hereditary characteristics in family trees are still underway.
Methods:
Ten HCM patients and 31 of their relatives were recruited. Targeted sequencing for 4 HCM related-genes, including
MYH7
,
MYBPC3
,
TNNT2,
and
TNNI3,
using targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) was carried out. Demographic, clinical, electrocardiography, and echocardiography characteristics were also characterized.
Results:
Among the 10 HCM patients, 5 were identified with the HCM pathogenic variants in MYH7 (3 patients), MYBPC3 (1 patient), and TNNT2 (1 patient) genes. Eleven out of 31 relatives from these 5 genotype-positive patients carried the same pathogenic variants. We found the novel c.822-2 A>G variant in the splicing site of the
TNNT2
gene responsible for HCM disease in a family with 7 subjects genotype positive and 3 others who suffered from sudden cardiac death.
Conclusion:
This case series highlighted the importance of genetic testing for clinically confirmed HCM patients and family members. The genetic information can be used as a molecular marker to complement the clinical presentation in the diagnosis of HCM, as well as a prognostic tool for the patients and their family members.
In Vietnam, great efforts have been made in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) information provision, education, communication, as well as service provision for the adolescent and youth (A&Y) over ...the last 10 years. This paper aimed to examine the content and implementation of SRH policies for A&Y between 2006 and 2017. Case studies were conducted, including interviews and historical documentation. Qualitative data were collected in Hai Duong, Hue, and Dong Thap provinces through 34 in-depth interviews with representatives of central/provincial agencies and 9 focus group discussions with representatives of communal agencies and beneficiaries. SRH policies for A&Y during 2006 to 2017, along with other related national policies, were developed cohesively, however, the gaps in information provision, education, communication as well as service provision remained unresolved. The contents of policies and program implementation did not cover comprehensively, especially regarding disadvantaged groups such as disabled people, migrants, ethnic minorities, and people aged 10 to 14 years. The A&Y SRH policies and program implementation had faced some challenges relating to governance, service delivery, health workforce, health information system, and health financing. The SRH policy for A&Y in the next period needs to be focused on interventions/services for disadvantaged groups. While the human resource is of great importance for the capacity and feasibility to tackle SRH’s challenges, strengthening the advocacy to ensure policies/programs should be prioritized and committed for effective implementation. An appropriate financing system to run information provision, education, communication, and support services for A&Y must be considered during policy development and implementation.
Chylous ascites results from the leakage of lipid-rich lymphatic fluid into the peritoneal cavity. Most postsurgical chylous ascites occurs following abdominal aortic surgeries. However, rarely, it ...is a complication after laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. Postsurgical chylous ascites are often managed with conservative treatment or surgery, but lymphatic embolization may be required. Here, we presented a 45-year-old male patient who was referred for abdominal distension for 1 week after left donor nephrectomy. The drain fluid was milky and fluid analysis revealed high concentrations of triglycerides and chylomicron, confirming diagnosis of chylous ascites. The patient was treated with conservative therapy including a low-fat diet and fluid drainage but continued to have high draining output (up to 1500-2000 mL/24 h). He underwent magnetic resonance lymphangiography and intranodal lymphangiography, revealing extravasation of contrast into the abdomen and the left renal fossa. We embolized the interstitial lymphatic of the left retroperitoneal and lymphatic vessels leak. The patient was discharged from hospital at the fifth day after intervention. In this article, we demonstrate lymphatic lesions, the safety, and success of this technique.
Pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) is an evidence-based treatment that has a long history of demonstrating efficacy for children with hemiparesis. The purpose of this study is to ...determine the effectiveness of a culturally responsive CIMT program for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) developed for the Vietnam healthcare system.
Thirty children with hemiplegic CP (mean age = 2.88 years, age range: 1 to 8 yrs, 60% male) were recruited to a CIMT program (7.5 h/week, 4 weeks) developed for the cultural context of Vietnam. Motor abilities of the affected arm and participation in daily activities were evaluated at 3 time points (one-week prior to CIMT (baseline), one-week before (pre) and after (post) CIMT) using the Quality of Upper Extremity Skill Test (QUEST) and Pediatric Motor Activity Log-Revised (PMAL-R). Individual goals were measured using the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS).
There were significant increases in the "How often scale" and "How Well" scales of the PMAL-R (0.75 and 0.75,
< 0.00)). Score of Grasp and Dissociated Movement items on the QUEST increased significantly (6.47 and 7.63,
< 0.001). Group GAS T-Scores were 52.19 indicating that children met individual goals.
A model of CIMT was successfully developed and delivered within the Vietnamese healthcare system. Future studies should explore the optimal model for CIMT in various regions of world where the delivery of rehabilitation services may vary.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a genetically influenced disease, but few studies have been performed to investigate the genetic basis of T2DM in Vietnamese subjects. Thus, the potential ...associations of KCNJ11 and ABCC8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with T2DM were investigated in a Kinh Vietnamese population. A cross-sectional study consisting of 404 subjects including 202 T2DM cases and 202 non-T2DM controls was designed to examine the potential associations of 4 KCNJ11 and ABCC8 SNPs (rs5219, rs2285676, rs1799859, and rs757110) with T2DM. Genotypes were identified based on restriction fragment length polymorphism and tetra-primer amplification refractory mutation system polymerase chain reaction. After statistically adjusting for age, sex, and BMI, rs5219 was found to be associated with an increased risk of T2DM under 2 inheritance models: codominant (OR = 2.15, 95% confidence intervals CI = 1.09-4.22) and recessive (OR = 2.08, 95%CI = 1.09-3.94). On the other hand, rs2285676, rs1799859, and rs757110 were not associated with an increased risk of T2DM. Haplotype analysis elucidated a strong linkage disequilibrium between the 3 SNPs, rs5219, rs2285676, and rs757110. The haplotype rs5219(A)/rs2285676(T)/rs757110(G) was associated with an increased risk of T2DM (OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.01-1.99). The results show that rs5219 is a lead candidate SNP associated with an increased risk of developing T2DM in the Kinh Vietnamese population. Further functional characterization is needed to uncover the mechanism underlying the potential genotype-phenotype associations.

This study describes our experience with autologous ...gamma delta T cell immunotherapy for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer patients in Vietnam, a developing nation.
Five patients with non-small cell lung cancer at stages III - IV were enrolled in the study. Each patient received six infusions of autologous γδT cells, separated by two weeks. Before, during, at the end of treatment, and three and six months after treatment, a comprehensive evaluation of clinical, laboratory, quality of life, and adverse events related to the method was conducted.
At the time of culture seeding, the total number of cells ranged from 2.9 to 18.2 x 106, with γδT cells ranging in number from 10.7 to 19.6 x 104. On day 14 of the culture, the number of γδT cells ranged from 3.1 to 8.3 x 108. Regarding the safety of therapy in a total of 30 infusions, two (fever), one (myalgia), and one (joint pain) were graded as 1 by CTCAE criteria. After the course, no toxicity was observed in the hematopoietic system, kidney function, or liver function. Evaluation of the patient's response in accordance with the RECIST 1.1 criteria: 20% of patients (one patient) had partial response disease, and 80% of patients (four patients) had stable disease at the end of treatment. During the follow-up period of the study, three patients were still alive, and the disease remained stable. The patient's quality of life improved after treatment in most functional measures (activity, cognitive, and social), but physical and emotional scores decreased slightly. Two patients' fatigue symptoms increased, but after six months of treatment, the average value dropped from 25.3 to 8.3. Dyspnea symptoms decreased gradually from 33.3 at the start of treatment to 8.3 six months later.
The initial results we obtained regarding the efficacy and safety of autologous γδT cell immunotherapy for patients with non-small cell lung cancer are extremely encouraging and comparable to those of previous studies.
