Rice bran protein has been found to be of high quality and of importance for food and pharmaceutical applications. It is a plant protein that can be derived from rice bran, an abundant and cheap ...agricultural byproduct. The protein content in rice bran is about 10-15% and it consists of 37% water-soluble, 31% salt-soluble, 2% alcohol-soluble, and 27% alkali-soluble storage proteins. Its unique property as being hypoallergenic and having anti-cancer activity makes it a superior cereal protein that may find a wide range of applications. There were already reports on the extraction of rice bran protein several decades ago. However, as of now, commercial rice bran protein is still unavailable in the market. This review is aimed at providing valuable discussions on rice bran protein, that is, storage protein, its various properties, and extraction methods for the development of an effective processing scheme. Also, an update on the current processing methods is also included.
Limnophila aromatica is commonly used as a spice and a medicinal herb in Southeast Asia. In this study, water and various concentrations (50%, 75%, and 100%) of methanol, ethanol, and acetone in ...water were used as solvent in the extraction of L. aromatica. The antioxidant activity, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content of the freeze-dried L. aromatica extracts were investigated using various in vitro assays. The extract obtained by 100% ethanol showed the highest total antioxidant activity, reducing power and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity. The same extract also exhibited the highest phenolic content (40.5 mg gallic acid equivalent/g of defatted L. aromatica) and the highest flavonoid content (31.11 mg quercetin equivalent/g of defatted L. aromatica). The highest extraction yield was obtained by using 50% aqueous acetone. These results indicate that L. aromatica can be used in dietary applications with a potential to reduce oxidative stress.
Individuals diagnosed with metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) suffer worse survival rates than their metastatic non-TNBC counterparts. There is little information on survival, treatment ...patterns, and medical costs of mTNBC patients in Asia. Therefore, this study aimed to examine 5-year survival, regimens of first-line systemic therapy, and healthcare costs of mTNBC patients in Taiwan. Adult females newly diagnosed with TNBC and non-TNBC as well as their survival data, treatment regimens and costs of health services were identified and retrieved from the Cancer Registry database, Death Registry database, and National Health Insurance (NHI) claims database. A total of 9691 (19.27%) women were identified as TNBC among overall BC. The 5-year overall survival rate of TNBC and non-TNBC was 81.28% and 86.50%, respectively, and that of mTNBC and metastatic non-TNBC was 10.81% and 33.46%, respectively. The majority of mTNBC patients received combination therapy as their first-line treatment (78.14%). The 5-year total cost in patients with metastatic non-TNBC and with mTNBC was NTD1,808,693 and NTD803,445, respectively. Higher CCI scores were associated with an increased risk of death and lower probability of receiving combination chemotherapy. Older age was associated with lower 5-year medical costs. In sum, mTNBC patients suffered from poorer survival and incurred lower medical costs than their metastatic non-TNBC counterparts. Future research will be needed when there are more treatment options available for mTNBC patients.
The preparation of NCC – bentonite nanocomposite using waste paper as the source of NCC was conducted in this study. The adsorption performance of the composite was tested for the removal of Pb(II) ...and Hg(II) from aqueous solution in single and binary systems. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were employed to correlate pure component adsorption isotherm. Langmuir equation can represent the experimental data better than Freundlich, the qm for lead is higher than mercury in both systems (single system qm = 0.44 mmol/g (Pb) and 0.23 mmol/g (Hg) for composite). All systems exhibit endothermic process, except for bentonite which shows the exothermic process. The modification of extended Langmuir model for a binary system with the inclusion of fractional loading and heat of adsorption was proposed in this study. The modified extended Langmuir model could represent the experimental data better than original extended Langmuir equation.

A nationwide cohort study between October 2003 and September 2010. Data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Among 100 938 newly diagnosed HCC patients, we identified 4569 HBV-related HCC patients who received curative liver resection for HCC between October 2003 and September 2010.
The risk of first tumor recurrence was compared between patients not taking nucleoside analogues (untreated cohort, n = 4051) and patients taking nucleoside analogues (treated cohort, n = 518). Cumulative incidences and hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated after adjusting for competing mortality.
The treated cohort had a higher prevalence of liver cirrhosis when compared with the untreated cohort (48.6% vs 38.7%; P < .001), but lower risk of HCC recurrence (n = 106 20.5% vs n = 1765 43.6%; P < .001), and lower overall death (n = 55 10.6% vs n = 1145 28.3%; P < .001). After adjusting for competing mortality, the treated cohort had a significantly lower 6-year HCC recurrence rate (45.6%; 95% CI, 36.5%-54.6% vs untreated, 54.6%; 95% CI, 52.5%-56.6%; P < .001). Six-year overall mortalities for treated cohorts were 29.0% (95% CI, 20.0%-38.0%) and for untreated 42.4% (95% CI, 40.0%-44.7%; P < .001). On modified Cox regression analysis, nucleoside analogue use (HR, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.55-0.81; P < .001), statin use (HR, 0.68; 95% CI, 0.53-0.87; P = .002), and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin use (HR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.73-0.88; P < .001) were independently associated with a reduced risk of HCC recurrence. Multivariable stratified analyses verified the association in all subgroups of patients, including those who were noncirrhotic (HR, 0.56; 95% CI, 0.42-0.76) and diabetic (HR, 0.52; 95% CI, 0.31-0.89).

Diet and exercise are conventional methods for controlling body weight and are linked to alterations in gut microbiota. However, the associations of diet, exercise, and gut microbiota in the control ...of obesity remain largely unknown. In the present study, using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), normal fat diet (NFD), exercise and their combination resulted in improved metabolic profiles in comparison to sedentary lifestyle with high fat diet (HFD). Moreover, diet exerted more influence than exercise in shaping the gut microbiota. HFD-fed mice receiving FMT from NFD-exercised donors not only showed remarkably reduced food efficacy, but also mitigated metabolic profiles (p < 0.05). The transmissible beneficial effects of FMT were associated with bacterial genera Helicobacter, Odoribacter and AF12 and overrepresentation of oxidative phosphorylation and glycolysis genes. Our findings demonstrate that the beneficial effects of diet and exercise are transmissible via FMT, suggesting a potential therapeutic treatment for obesity.

In addition, anti-fatigue activity and exercise performance were evaluated on the basis of exhaustive swimming time, forelimb grip strength, and levels of serum lactate, ammonia, glucose, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and creatine kinase (CK) after a swimming exercise. The exhaustive swimming time for the KF-1X, KF-2X, and KF-5X groups was significantly longer than that for the vehicle group, and the forelimb grip strength of the KF-1X, KF-2X, and KF-5X groups was also significantly higher than that of the vehicle group. KF supplementation also decreased serum lactate, ammonia, BUN, and CK levels after the swimming test. However, tissue glycogen content, an important energy source for exercise, increased significantly with KF supplementation. Thus, KF supplementation can alter the gut microbiota composition, improve performance, and combat physical fatigue.

CFU/kg/day groups and were fed by oral gavage once daily for 4 weeks. The results showed that 4 weeks of PL-02 supplementation could significantly increase muscle mass, muscle strength and endurance performance, and hepatic and muscular glycogen storage. Furthermore, PL-02 could significantly decrease lactate, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), ammonia, and creatine kinase (CK) levels after exercise (p < 0.05). We believe that PL-02 can be used as a supplement to improve exercise performance and for its anti-fatigue effect.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of LIPUS on M1/M2 polarization of microglial cells and the regulatory mechanisms associated with signaling pathways.
BV-2 microglial cells were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to an M1 phenotype or by interleukin-4 (IL-4) to an M2 phenotype. Some microglial cells were exposed to LIPUS, while others were not. M1/M2 marker mRNA and protein expression were measured using real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot, respectively. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to determine inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS)-/arginase-1 (Arg-1)- and CD68-/CD206-positive cells.
LIPUS treatment significantly attenuated LPS-induced increases in inflammatory markers (iNOS, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6) as well as the expression of cell surface markers (CD86 and CD68) of M1-polarized microglia. In contrast, LIPUS treatment significantly enhanced the expression of M2-related markers (Arg-1, IL-10, and Ym1) and membrane protein (CD206). LIPUS treatment prevented M1 polarization of microglia and enhanced or sustained M2 polarization by regulating M1/M2 polarization through the signal transducer and activator of transcription 1/STAT6/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma pathways.
Our findings suggest that LIPUS inhibits microglial polarization and switches microglia from the M1 to the M2 phenotype.
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed medications. The existing data suggest that individuals at a high risk of fractures have been exposed to high doses of PPIs for prolonged ...durations. CYP2C19 plays a pivotal role in metabolism of PPIs and thereby influences their pharmacokinetic profile. Hence, we hypothesize that CYP2C19 genotypes may be associated with fragility fracture among PPIs users due to PPI exposure. This study aimed to investigate the association between CYP2C19 genotypes, bone mineral density (BMD), and osteoporotic fracture in a hospital-based population. This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients who were prescribed long-term PPIs at Taichung Veterans General Hospital using data extracted from the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative between January 2010 and April 2021. Associations between CYP2C19 phenotypes, comorbidities, and fractures in PPI users were analyzed. We enrolled 1518 long-term PPI users; 571 (38%), 727 (48%), and 220 (14%) CYP2C19 normal metabolizers (NMs), intermediate metabolizers (IMs), and poor metabolizers (PMs), respectively. Among them, 49 (3.2%) patients developed fractures within the 1-year follow-up period; 20 (3.5%) fractures in NMs, 24 (3.3%) in IMs, and 5 (2.3%) in PMs, respectively. No significant difference was observed among CYP2C19 genotypes and fracture. Additionally, BMD measurements during the 1-year follow-up period were made available among 75 participants. No significant difference in BMD between CYP2C19 PMs and non-PMs was found. This real-world, hospital-based study concludes that CYP2C19 PMs/IMs are not associated with an increased risk for fractures or reduced BMD in individuals on long-term PPI therapy.
