The aim of the present work was to explore the chemical-sensorial characteristics and aromatic profile of caciotta cheese obtained from Friesian cows fed a diet enriched with grape pomace obtained ...from red grape (Vitis vinifera L.). Dietary enrichment with grape pomace influenced the production of caciotta cheeses in interesting ways from a compositional point of view, as cheese samples were rich in polyphenols, giving a high antioxidant potential. From a biochemical standpoint, we noted a slight decrease of proteolysis during ripening, whereas, according to the analysis of volatile compounds, lipolysis was the most relevant phenomenon in samples. The presence of bioactive compounds also modified the fatty acid profile of milk and cheese, leading to an increase in concentration of linoleic, vaccenic, and rumenic acids. No significant variations were found in the sensory profile. These results showed the potential of dietary grape pomace intake to influence the chemical-nutritional and nutraceutical properties of cow milk and cheeses, whose introduction to the market could be attractive to consumers, providing interesting implications for the dairy industry. Finally, our results identified of a valid use of an agro-industrial by-product, grape pomace, whose disposal generally presents economic and environmental problems.

CROSS (Cryogenic Rare-event Observatory with Surface Sensitivity) aims at developing and testing a new bolometric technology to be applied to future large-scale experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of the promising nuclei

Mo and

Te. The limiting factor in large-scale bolometric searches for this rare process is the background induced by surface radioactive contamination, as shown by the results of the CUORE experiment. The basic concept of CROSS consists of rejecting this challenging background component by pulse-shape discrimination, assisted by a proper coating of the faces of the crystal containing the isotope of interest and serving as energy absorber of the bolometric detector. In this paper, we demonstrate that ultra-pure superconductive Al films deposited on the crystal surfaces act successfully as pulse-shape modifiers, both with fast and slow phonon sensors. Rejection factors higher than 99.9% of
α
surface radioactivity have been demonstrated in a series of prototypes based on crystals of Li
2
MoO
4
and TeO
2
. We have also shown that point-like energy depositions can be identified up to a distance of
∼
1 mm from the coated surface. The present program envisions an intermediate experiment to be installed underground in the Canfranc laboratory (Spain) in a CROSS-dedicated facility. This experiment, comprising

Mo, will be a general test of the CROSS technology as well as a worldwide competitive search for neutrinoless double-beta decay, with sensitivity to the effective Majorana mass down to 70 meV in the most favorable conditions.
We propose a new parameterization of the antineutrino flux from core collapse supernovae, that allows an interpretation of its astrophysical parameters within the Bethe and Wilson scenario for the ...explosion, and that leads to a reasonable (smooth) behavior of the average energy and of the luminosity curve. We apply it to analyze the events observed by Kamiokande-II, IMB and Baksan detectors in correlation with SN1987A. For the first time, we consider in the same analysis all data characteristics: times, energies and angles of the observed events. We account for the presence of background and evaluate the impact of neutrino oscillations. The hypothesis that the initial luminous phase of emission (accretion) is absent can be rejected at the 2% significance level. Without the need to impose external priors in the likelihood analysis, the best-fit values of the astrophysical parameters are found to be in remarkable agreement with the expectations of the standard core collapse scenario; in particular, the electron antineutrino-sphere radius is 16
km, the duration of the accretion phase is found to be 0.55
s, and the initial accreting mass is 0.22
M
⊙
. Similarly, the total energy emitted in neutrinos is
2.2
×
10
53
erg
, again close to the expectations. The errors on the parameters are evaluated and found to be relatively large, consistently with the limited number of detected events; the two-dimensional confidence regions, that demonstrate the main correlations between the parameters, are also given.
SABRE aims to directly measure the annual modulation of the dark matter interaction rate with NaI(Tl) crystals. A modulation compatible with the standard hypothesis, in which our Galaxy is immersed ...in a dark matter halo, has been measured by the DAMA experiment in the same target material. Other direct detection experiments, using different target materials, seem to exclude the interpretation of such modulation in the simplest scenario of WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering. The SABRE experiment aims to carry out an independent search with sufficient sensitivity to confirm or refute the DAMA claim. The goal of the SABRE experiment is to achieve the lowest background rate for a NaI(Tl) experiment (order of 0.1 cpd/kg/keV
ee
in the energy region of interest for dark matter). This challenging goal could be achievable by operating high-purity crystals inside a liquid scintillator veto for active background rejection. In addition, twin detectors will be located in the northern and southern hemispheres to identify possible contributions to the modulation from seasonal or site-related effects. The SABRE project includes an initial Proof-of-Principle phase at LNGS (Italy), to assess the radio-purity of the crystals and the efficiency of the liquid scintillator veto. This paper describes the general concept of SABRE and the expected sensitivity to WIMP annual modulation.
We report on the thermal neutron flux measurements carried out at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC) with two commercial

×
2
″
CLYC detectors. The measurements were performed as part ...of an experimental campaign at LSC with
3
He detectors, for establishing the sensitivity limits and use of CLYCs in low background conditions. A careful characterization of the intrinsic
α
and
γ
-ray background in the detectors was required and done with dedicated measurements. It was found that the
α
activities in the two CLYC crystals differ by a factor of three, and the use of Monte Carlo simulations and a Bayesian unfolding method allowed us to determine the specific
α
activities from the
238
U and
232
Th decay chains. The simulations and unfolding also revealed that the
γ
-ray background registered in the detectors is dominated by the intrinsic activity of the components of the detector such as the aluminum housing and photo-multiplier and that the activity within the crystal is low in comparison. The data from the neutron flux measurements with the two detectors were analyzed with different methodologies: one based on an innovative
α
/neutron pulse shape discrimination method and one based on the subtraction of the intrinsic
α
background that masks the neutron signals in the region of interest. The neutron sensitivity of the CLYCs was calculated by Monte Carlo simulations with MCNP6 and GEANT4. The resulting thermal neutron fluxes are in good agreement with complementary flux measurement performed with
3
He detectors, but close to the detection limit imposed by the intrinsic
α
activity.
We present here a characterization of the low background NaI(Tl) crystal NaI-33 based on a period of almost one year of data taking (891 kg
×
days exposure) in a detector configuration with no use of ...organic scintillator veto. This remarkably radio-pure crystal already showed a low background in the SABRE Proof-of-Principle (PoP) detector, in the low energy region of interest (1–6 keV) for the search of dark matter interaction via the annual modulation signature. As the vetoable background components, such as
40
K, are here sub-dominant, we reassembled the PoP setup with a fully passive shielding. We upgraded the selection of events based on a Boosted Decision Tree algorithm that rejects most of the PMT-induced noise while retaining scintillation signals with > 90% efficiency in 1–6 keV. We find an average background of 1.39 ± 0.02 counts/day/kg/keV in the region of interest and a spectrum consistent with data previously acquired in the PoP setup, where the external veto background suppression was in place. Our background model indicates that the dominant background component is due to decays of
210
Pb, only partly residing in the crystal itself. The other location of
210
Pb is the reflector foil that wraps the crystal. We now proceed to design the experimental setup for the physics phase of the SABRE North detector, based on an array of similar crystals, using a low radioactivity PTFE reflector and further improving the passive shielding strategy, in compliance with the new safety and environmental requirements of Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso.
The aim of the present work was to investigate the potential of microemulsions for the buccal administration of triamcinolone acetonide. Microemulsions were developed by the construction of ...pseudoternary phase diagrams, using the aqueous titration method. Among all microemulsions prepared and tested for stability, three were selected and submitted to characterization and in vitro permeation/retention experiments, using pig esophageal epithelium, an accepted model of the buccal mucosa. Furthermore, one microemulsion was added of excipients (stearylamine, CTAB and chitosan) able to alter the charge of droplets.
The results obtained show that the permeation of triamcinolone acetonide across pig esophageal epithelium was not influenced by the droplet size nor by the composition, but only by the presence of chitosan, polysaccharide able to increase the transport across mono and stratified epithelia. The determination of the permeation parameters allowed us to show that chitosan acts on the diffusion parameter across the tissue and not on the partitioning parameter; for the same reason the tissue retention of triamcinolone acetonide was not modified. Triamcinolone flux (2.6 μg cm−2 h−1) was too low to make systemic administration feasible (dose required 2.5 to 60 mg/day).
The amount of triamcinolone acetonide recovered in the mucosa after only 10 min. of microemulsion application was much higher than after overnight application of the commercial paste Omicilon® A. This suggests that triamcinolone acetonide microemulsions can be an interesting alternative to the commercial formulation to treat diseases of the buccal mucosa. Owing to the fast uptake by the tissue, the formulation can be used as a mouthwash.

The aim of this study was to evaluate phenolic composition, antioxidant potential, and lipolytic events in raw milk obtained from goat fed a dietary supplementation with olive leaves (OL), a ...by-product of the olive oil production chain. For this purpose, 30 Saanen goats were randomly allocated into 2 groups of 15 goats each: the control group received a standard diet that was prepared by taking into account the nutritional needs of lactating goats, whereas the experimental group (EG) was fed with an OL-supplemented diet (10% on a dry matter basis). At the end of the 30 d of the trial, the individual milk samples were collected and immediately analyzed for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity (AOA). Subsequently, the individual phenolic compounds have been identified and quantified through an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography system and a characterization of free fatty acids released in milk has been performed. The results showed a positive effect of dietary OL supplementation in improving total phenolic content and AOA; furthermore, 19 phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, simple phenols, and secoiridoids, have been identified in EG milk. In addition to this, a reduced accumulation of free fatty acids has been found in EG milk, and this finding leads us to hypothesize an inhibitory action of the identified phenolic compounds toward the enzymes responsible for lipolytic events. The use of the molecular docking approach verified the interactions, defining a fairly interesting framework for cinnamic acid, which should be able to noncovalently bind these enzymes, interfering with the recruitment of the substrate and therefore, slowing down their hydrolytic activity. In any case, this information will be subjected to in vitro evaluations for an accurate characterization of the biochemical mechanisms that can be established in milk naturally enriched with bioactive compounds.
