Aim There were little information in literature about Albrecht von Graefe's ophthalmological education in Ireland, which was in summer 1851. The aim of this work is to illustrate his stay with Sir ...William Wilde in Dublin. A brief review of the two giants of ophthalmology also was given. Methods Historical search of the data, and the biography of the corresponding ophthalmologists were recorded and analysed. Institutes for history of medicine as well as medicohistorians also were contacted. Results Graefe visited Sir William Wilde at the end of his 3-years European ophthalmic educational travels. He learned from him about treatment and examinations of the eye and the skills of various ophthalmic operations, and organization of work in his eye hospital. After that he founded the famous private Eye Clinic in Berlin, and became one of the greatest ophthalmologists of the 19th century. Conclusion Graefe's talent, hard work, high quality of education and later continuous contacts with his teachers contributed to modernization and internationalization of ophthalmology.
Summary
Background
There are few diseases in ophthalmology which could have a fatal outcome, one of them is orbital cellulitis. The aim of this article is to give epidemiological analysis of orbital ...cellulitis in adult patients in the Split region, Croatia.
Methods
The study was based on a retrospective review of medical records of 53 adult patients with orbital cellulitis treated during the period of 26 years from 1991 to 2016 at the Department of Ophthalmology in the University Hospital of Split.
Results
The incidence of orbital cellulitis in adults in the Split region was 0.57. The mean age of the patients was 53.5 ± 19.0 years. Patients were male in 47.2% of the cases and female in 52.8%. The distribution of orbital cellulitis according to seasons shows that it was most common during winter with 20 (37.7%) and in autumn with 16 (30.2%) cases and less frequent in summer with 6 (11.3%) and in spring 11 (20.8%) cases. The most common cause of orbital cellulitis was sinusitis in 33 (62.2%) patients. In total, there were 16 (30.2%) surgical interventions.
Conclusions
Orbital cellulitis in adult patients is a relatively rare disease but with a possible fatal ending and damage to vision. It should be diagnosed quickly and treated adequately, very often in cooperation of an ophthalmologist with an otorhinolaryngologist and a maxillofacial surgeon. Orbital cellulitis appears to be more common in colder months, because sinusitis occurred more often then. It is treated with adequate antibiotic application but in almost one third of cases a surgical intervention was necessary.
In this work the possible influences of some retinal eye problems on paintings of several famous artists are considered. The change of painting styles and artistic expression in different periods and ...ages in a group of world-wide well-known painters are described and correlated with known or suspected retinal diseases. Some of them largely became recognizable because of that. Contemplations are offered about the effects of retinal diseases in the works of Degas, Munch, Cézanne, O'Keeffe, Constable and Goya. Retinal eye diseases have a significant impact on the work of selected famous painters.
Anton von Tröltsch bio je glasoviti njemački otolog i jedan od pionira moderne otologije. Cilj je ovog rada prikazati njegovo iskustvo stečeno tijekom obrazovanja u kontinentalnoj Europi i na ...Britanskim otocima. Ovaj rad temelji se na analizi podataka o ovoj temi iz medicinsko-povijesnih knjiga, znanstvenih članaka i internetskih izvora. Anton von Tröltsch školovao se za oftalmologa i otologa, ali se poslije posvetio samo otologiji. Njegovi najpoznatiji učitelji bili su oftalmolozi Albrecht von Gräfe u Berlinu i Ferdinand von Arlt u Pragu, oftalmolog i otolog William Wilde u Dublinu i otolog Joseph Toynbee u Londonu. Popularizirao je ‘čeono zrcalo’ i lijevak za upotrebu u otoskopiji. Bio je jedan od osnivača prvog otološkog časopisa. Godine 1857. otvorio je ušnu kliniku u Würzburgu. Ovaj rad opisuje njegovo obrazovanje i rad u otologiji. Profesor Tröltsch dao je velik doprinos razvoju suvremene otologije zahvaljujući svom predanom radu i izvrsnoj obuci kod uglednih liječnika tog razdoblja. Posebno ga se dojmila britanska otologija, što je dovelo do njegovog usmjerenja prema otologiji.
Anton von Tröltsch was well known German otologist and one of the pioneers of modern otology. The aim of this paper is to present his educational experiences in Continental Europe and the British Isles. This paper is based on an analysis of the data concerning this topic, from medico-historical books, scientific articles, and internet sources. Anton von Tröltsch was trained as an ophthalmologist and otologist, but later devoted himself to otology only. His most famous teachers were the ophthalmologists Albrecht von Gräfe, in Berlin, and Ferdinand von Arlt, in Prague, the ophthalmologist and otologist William Wilde from Dublin and the otologist Joseph Toynbee from London. He popularized the ‘reflecting aural mirror’ and the speculum for usage in otoscopy. He was one of the founders of the first otological journal. In 1857 he opened an ear clinic in Würzburg. This paper describes his training and work in otology. Professor A. v. Tröltsch made a great contribution to the development of modern otology thanks to his dedicated work and excellent training with eminent doctors of the time. He was especially impressed by British ear medicine, which led to his devotion to otology.
The beginnings of the modern otorhinolaryngology in Croatia started in the second half of the 19th century. Before that, there were only rare attempts of some doctors who published medical papers ...touching the frame of otorhinolaryngology. Mainly those were the PhD's disertations at Vienna, Budapest and Padua University. Among them there was dr Ivo Manola from Split, who in Padua in 1834 took a doctor's degree dealing with otologic diseases. Dr Nikola Fertilio (Nerezisća the island of Brac, 1861--Trieste, 1928) was the first otorhinolaryngologist out of a hospital in Split and Dalmatia. He studied medicine partly in Graz and Vienna, where he graduated in 1890. During 1903 he finished severeal otorhinolaryngological courses which were held by professors Viktor Urbantschitsch and Alfred Bing and by private doctor assistant professor Markus Hajek. During the winter 1903/04 he attended the "Semestralkurs über praktische Orhenheilkunde" at professor Adam Politzer, founder and managing director of the first Otology Clinic in Vienna and the world in 1873. He worked in Trieste, where he practiced otorhinolaryngology. Dr. Fertilio a specialist for diseases of nose, ear and throat, occasionally, usually during his holidays, came from Trieste to Dalmatia (Split, Zadar, Sibenik, Dubrovnik and Kotor) to treat and operate patients. He was comming to Split from 1904 till 1914. He published and announced his commings in the local newpapers. He used to come in summer, most often in August and stayed from several days till two weeks. He stayed and had a practice in Hotel Bellevue. As there wasn't an otorhinolaryngologist in the regional hospital of Split till 1923, otorhinolaryngological operations were occasionally performed by doctors of other surgical branches. Otorhinolaryngologist dr Aleksandar Dorsner came to Split hospital in 1923 and organized otorhinolaryngological service that he led till 1934.

Von Graefeu je rođen 1828. u vili Finkenherd u sjeverozapadnom dijelu Tiergartena
u Berlinu. Živio je u Behrenstrasse, jednoj od otmjenijih ulica u Berlinu, gdje je i započeo
1850. svoju oftalmološku praksu. Poslije, 1852., osnovao je poznatu privatnu očnu kliniku u
Karlstrasse 46 u kojoj je liječio brojne očne bolesnike i educirao mnoge značajne oftalmologe
i kirurge. Nekoliko je puta mijenjao mjesto boravka tako da je stanovao i u aveniji Unter den
Linden i Bellevuestrasse blizu Potsdamer Platza.
Godine 1868. postao je šef Očne klinike u bolnici Charité. Otad do smrti 1870. živio je u
prostranoj kući u Viktoriastrasse.
Iako je Albrecht von Graefe živio samo četrdeset dvije godine, puno je putovao, ali je najveći
dio života proveo u Berlinu. Graefe je dao velik doprinos oftalmologiji te se smatra ,,ocem
glaukoma” i nestorom moderne oftalmologije.
Retinopathy and nephropathy are common late type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) complications. In this study we investigated whether individual differences in 4 candidate genes significantly contribute to ...development and progression of late complications in T1D patients. We examined 121 patients for the presence of diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy. We genotyped variants in vitamin D receptor (VDR) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) genes in 47 patients and in NeuroD1 and interleukin-1 receptor 1 (IL1R1) genes in 35 patients. Diabetic retinopathy had 66 (55%) patients after a median of 13.0 years after diagnosis. Diabetic nephropathy had 14 (11.66%) patients, all of whom had already developed retinopathy. A significant correlation between the degree of diabetic retinopathy and mean microalbuminuria (MA) value has been found (chi2 = 54.18, p < 0.001). After correcting for duration of disease, only the VDR gene BsmI genotypes showed significant association with cumulative prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, while no investigated genetic polymorphysms could reliably predict diabetic nephropathy.
