We present an all-sky catalogue of 2970 nearby (d ≲ 50 pc), bright (J < 9) M- or late K-type dwarf stars, 86 per cent of which have been confirmed by spectroscopy. This catalogue will be useful for ...searches for Earth-size and possibly Earth-like planets by future space-based transit missions and ground-based infrared Doppler radial velocity surveys. Stars were selected from the SUPERBLINK proper motion catalogue according to absolute magnitudes, spectra, or a combination of reduced proper motions and photometric colours. From our spectra, we determined gravity-sensitive indices, and identified and removed 0.2 per cent of these as interloping hotter or evolved stars. 13 per cent of the stars exhibit Hα emission, an indication of stellar magnetic activity and possible youth. The mean metallicity is Fe/H = −0.07 with a standard deviation of 0.22 dex, similar to nearby solar-type stars. We determined stellar effective temperatures by least-squares fitting of spectra to model predictions calibrated by fits to stars with established bolometric temperatures, and estimated radii, luminosities, and masses using empirical relations. Six per cent of stars with images from integral field spectra are resolved doubles. We inferred the planet population around M dwarfs using Kepler data and applied this to our catalogue to predict detections by future exoplanet surveys.
The human brain is inherently limited in the information it can make consciously accessible. When people monitor a rapid stream of visual items for two targets, they typically fail to see the second ...target if it occurs within 200-500 ms of the first, a phenomenon called the attentional blink (AB). The neural basis for the AB is poorly understood, partly because conventional neuroimaging techniques cannot resolve visual events displayed close together in time. Here we introduce an approach that characterises the precise effect of the AB on behaviour and neural activity. We employ multivariate encoding analyses to extract feature-selective information carried by randomly-oriented gratings. We show that feature selectivity is enhanced for correctly reported targets and suppressed when the same items are missed, whereas irrelevant distractor items are unaffected. The findings suggest that the AB involves both short- and long-range neural interactions between visual representations competing for access to consciousness.
DS Tuc Ab is a Neptune-sized planet that orbits around a G star in the 45 Myr old Tucana-Horologium moving group. Here, we report the measurement of the sky-projected angle between the stellar spin ...axis and the planet's orbital axis, based on the observation of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect during three separate planetary transits. The orbit appears to be well aligned with the equator of the host star, with a projected obliquity of . In addition to the distortions in the stellar absorption lines due to the transiting planet, we observed variations that we attribute to large starspots, with angular sizes of tens of degrees. The technique that we have developed for simultaneous modeling of starspots and the planet-induced distortions may be useful in other observations of planets around active stars.
Abstract Objective Pharmacological activation of the nuclear receptor PPARγ is linked to numerous beneficial effects in the contexts of inflammation, lipid homeostasis, Type-2 Diabetes (T2D) and ...atherosclerosis. These beneficial effects include priming of circulating monocytes for differentiation towards an ‘alternative’ anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage phenotype. As we have recently shown that participation in low-intensity exercise increases PPARγ expression and activity in leukocytes from previously sedentary individuals, we aimed to elucidate whether low-intensity exercise elicited a pattern of gene expression similar to that reported for M2 monocyte-macrophage differentiation. Methods 17 sedentary individuals undertook an 8-week low-intensity exercise programme (walking 10,000 steps/day, three times/week). Changes in expression of PPARs and the PPARγ co-activators PGC-1α and PGC-1β ; Th2 (IL-4; IL-10) and Th1 (IL-6) cytokines; and markers for the M2 (AMAC1, CD14, MR, IL-4) and the ‘classical’ pro-inflammatory M1 (MCP-1, TNFα, IL-6) phenotypes, were determined using RT-PCR (to assess leukocyte mRNA expression) and ELISA (to assess plasma cytokine levels). Results Exercise was associated with upregulation of M2 markers, PGC-1α and PGC-1β , and with downregulation of M1 markers. Moreover, plasma levels of Th2 cytokines increased after exercise, while those of Th1 cytokines decreased. However, other PPARs (PPARα; PPARβ/δ) did not undergo marked exercise-induced activation or upregulation. Thus, participation in low-intensity exercise may prime monocytes for differentiation towards an M2 macrophage phenotype via PPARγ/PGC-1α/β. Conclusion Given the similarities between these effects and pharmacologically induced M2 polarisation, we propose that exercise-induced PPARγ/PGC-1α/β -mediated M2 polarisation may constitute a novel anti-inflammatory benefit of low-intensity exercise.
The restricted movement paradigm (RMP) asserts that stream fishes are sedentary, living much of their lives within a single reach. To test the RMP, we implanted eyed Atlantic salmon eggs (Salmo ...salar) into a total of 19 artificial redds, in seven salmon-free streams, in 6 years, and estimated summer fry dispersal through electrofishing surveys. As expected, most fry dispersed downstream, but an average of 35% moved upstream. Surprisingly, fry moved just as far upstream as downstream (medians = 403 and 404 m, respectively). Fry were larger at lower densities and farther from redd sites, consistent with density-dependent growth, and larger upstream than downstream, possibly indicating that larger fry were better able to move upstream against the current. Dispersal distances were normally distributed around all but two of 19 redds, and half of the downstream dispersal curves were best described by unimodal distributions, consistent with a homogeneous movement strategy. Our data suggest that salmon fry were more mobile and move upstream more than previously thought, which should facilitate their stocking or reintroduction to new habitats.
Proximal humeral fractures occur frequently, with fixed angle locking plates often being used for their treatment. No current quantitative evidence for the effect of different screw configurations ...exists, and the large number of variations makes biomechanical testing prohibitive. Therefore, we used an established and validated finite element osteosynthesis test kit to quantify the effect of variations in screw configuration on predicted failure risk of PHILOS plate fixation for unstable proximal humerus fractures.
Twenty-six low-density humerus models were osteotomized to create malreduced unstable 3-part fractures that were virtually fixed with PHILOS plates. Twelve screw configurations were simulated: 6 using 2 screw rows, 4 using 3 rows, and 1 with either 8 or 9 screws. Three physiological loading cases were modeled and an established finite element analysis methodology was used. The average peri-screw bone strain, previously demonstrated to predict fatigue cutout failure, was used to compare the different configurations.
Significant differences in peri-screw strains, and thus predicted failure risk, were seen with different combinations. The 9-screw configuration demonstrated the lowest peri-screw strains. Fewer screw constructs showed lower strains when placed further apart. The calcar screws (row E) significantly (P < .001) reduced fixation failure risk.
Screw configurations significantly impact predicted cutout failure risk for locking plate fixations of unstable proximal humerus fractures in low-density bone. Although requiring clinical corroboration, the result of this study suggests that additional screws reduce peri-screw strains, the distance between them should be maximized whenever possible and the calcar screws should be used.
1. Ecologists have long been interested in the processes that determine patterns of species occurrence and co-occurrence. Potential short-comings of many existing empirical approaches that address ...these questions include a reliance on patterns of occurrence at a single time point, failure to account properly for imperfect detection and treating the environment as a static variable. 2. We fit detection and non-detection data collected from repeat visits using a dynamic site occupancy model that simultaneously accounts for the temporal dynamics of a focal prey species, its predators and its habitat. Our objective was to determine how disturbance and species interactions affect the co-occurrence probabilities of an endangered toad and recently introduced non-native predators in stream breeding habitats. For this, we determined statistical support for alternative processes that could affect co-occurrence frequency in the system. 3. We collected occurrence data at stream segments in two watersheds where streams were largely ephemeral and one watershed dominated by perennial streams. Co-occurrence probabilities of toads with non-native predators were related to disturbance frequency, with low co-occurrence in the ephemeral watershed and high co-occurrence in the perennial watershed. This occurred because once predators were established at a site, they were rarely lost from the site except in cases when the site dried out. Once dry sites became suitable again, toads colonized them much more rapidly than predators, creating a period of predator-free space. 4. We attribute the dynamics to a storage effect, where toads persisting outside the stream environment during periods of drought rapidly colonized sites when they become suitable again. Our results support that even in highly connected stream networks, temporal disturbance can structure frequencies with which breeding amphibians encounter non-native predators. 5. Dynamic multi-state occupancy models are a powerful tool for rigorously examining hypotheses about inter-species and species—habitat interactions. In contrast to previous methods that infer dynamic processes based on static patterns in occupancy, the approach we took allows the dynamic processes that determine species—species and species—habitat interactions to be directly estimated.
(1) Background: Unstable meta-diaphyseal tibial fractures represent a heterogeneous group of injuries. Recently, good clinical results have been reported when applying a technique of externalized ...locked plating in appropriate cases, highlighting its advantage in terms of less additional tissue injury compared with conventional methods of fracture fixation. The aims of this prospective clinical cohort study were, firstly, to investigate the biomechanical and clinical feasibility and, secondly, to evaluate the clinical and functional outcomes of single-stage externalized locked plating for treatment of unstable, proximal (intra- and extra-articular) and distal (extra-articular), meta-diaphyseal tibial fractures. (2) Methods: Patients, who matched the inclusion criteria of sustaining a high-energy unstable meta-diaphyseal tibial fracture, were identified prospectively for single-stage externalized locked plating at a single trauma hospital in the period from April 2013 to December 2022. (3) Results: Eighteen patients were included in the study. Average follow-up was 21.4 ± 12.3 months, with 94% of the fractures healing without complications. The healing time was 21.1 ± 4.6 weeks, being significantly shorter for patients with proximal extra- versus intra-articular meta-diaphyseal tibial fractures,
= 0.04. Good and excellent functional outcomes in terms of HSS and AOFAS scores, and knee and ankle joints range of motion were observed among all patients, with no registered implant breakage, deep infection, and non-union. (4) Conclusions: Single-stage externalized locked plating of unstable meta-diaphyseal tibial fractures provides adequate stability of fixation with promising clinical results and represents an attractive alternative to the conventional methods of external fixation when inclusion criteria and rehabilitation protocol are strictly followed. Further experimental studies and randomized multicentric clinical trials with larger series of patients are necessary to pave the way of its use in clinical practice.
Objective To examine prospectively the association between muscular strength and mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer in men.Design Prospective cohort study.Setting Aerobics ...centre longitudinal study.Participants 8762 men aged 20-80.Main outcome measures All cause mortality up to 31 December 2003; muscular strength, quantified by combining one repetition maximal measures for leg and bench presses and further categorised as age specific thirds of the combined strength variable; and cardiorespiratory fitness assessed by a maximal exercise test on a treadmill.Results During an average follow-up of 18.9 years, 503 deaths occurred (145 cardiovascular disease, 199 cancer). Age adjusted death rates per 10 000 person years across incremental thirds of muscular strength were 38.9, 25.9, and 26.6 for all causes; 12.1, 7.6, and 6.6 for cardiovascular disease; and 6.1, 4.9, and 4.2 for cancer (all P<0.01 for linear trend). After adjusting for age, physical activity, smoking, alcohol intake, body mass index, baseline medical conditions, and family history of cardiovascular disease, hazard ratios across incremental thirds of muscular strength for all cause mortality were 1.0 (referent), 0.72 (95% confidence interval 0.58 to 0.90), and 0.77 (0.62 to 0.96); for death from cardiovascular disease were 1.0 (referent), 0.74 (0.50 to 1.10), and 0.71 (0.47 to 1.07); and for death from cancer were 1.0 (referent), 0.72 (0.51 to 1.00), and 0.68 (0.48 to 0.97). The pattern of the association between muscular strength and death from all causes and cancer persisted after further adjustment for cardiorespiratory fitness; however, the association between muscular strength and death from cardiovascular disease was attenuated after further adjustment for cardiorespiratory fitness.Conclusion Muscular strength is inversely and independently associated with death from all causes and cancer in men, even after adjusting for cardiorespiratory fitness and other potential confounders.
