The results of a study on the dependence of growth and vegetation process of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton upon meteorological factors are presented in the article. The investigations were ...conducted at Kaunas Botanical Garden of Vytautas Magnus University during vegetation periods in 2001-2005. The object of investigations was Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton, a medicinal annual herbaceous plant of Lamiaceae Lindl. family, native of Eastern Asia, which passes the whole development cycle under climatic conditions of Central Lithuania. The duration of vegetation period of Perilla frutescens on the average is 167 days. The earliest beginning of vegetation and optimal climatic conditions for growth are when hydrothermic coefficient reaches 1.60-1.80 (conditions of excessive humidity). Optimal climatic conditions for massive flowering and seed maturation are observed when hydrothermic coefficient decreases to 1.20 - then massive flowering starts 10 days earlier and lasts 25 days longer. A strong correlation was found between massive flowering and hydrothermic coefficient (r(2)=0.9408). Using mathematical-statistical methods, the consistent patterns of growth and vegetation process of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton were determined, specifying the time for raw material preparation what determines its quality and quantity.
To determine the amounts of flavonoids accumulated in the buds of single-styled hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.); and to establish the possibility of usage of hawthorn buds in pharmacy practice.
...Different examples of hawthorn buds collected in 2001, 2002 and 2003 from some Lithuanian regions: Akmene (V1, V2, V3), Kedainiai (S1, S2, S3), Klaipeda (M1), Lazdijai (D1, D2, D3) and Vilnius (VL1, VL2) from branches of lower storey. Examples were extracted with ethanol and flavonoids were measured by spectroscopic method and by high performance liquid chromatography.
From 0.72 to 1.89% of flavonoids are found in the hawthorn buds. The dominating flavonoid is vitexin-2-O-rhamnosid (6.72-10.91 milligrams in one gram of dried crude drug). Other flavonoids are: vitexin: 0.88-6.53 milligrams/gram, hyperosid: 0.85-2.70 milligrams/gram, rutin: 0.72-2.10 milligrams/gram and quercitrin: 0.82-1.01 milligrams/gram.
The marks of phytochemical compounds of Lithuanian single-styled hawthorn buds corroborated the theory of possibility to use hawthorn buds as pharmaceutical crude drug and form sufficient ground for planning phytochemical and pharmacological researches of new hawthorn crude drug.

Cough-relieving medicinal herbs in tea are used from ancient times. Mucilage present in them or secretion produced under the influence of the active substances covers the oral and throat mucosa ...soothing its irritability and relieving dry, tiresome cough. It is known that the mixtures of medicinal herbs (Specias) have a complex influence on the human organism and the rational combination of medicinal herbs can improve their curative action and decrease the undesirable side effects. Having summarized the properties of those medicinal herbs we decided to create two formulations of cough-relieving herbal tea. The first formulation consists of marshmallow roots, liquorice roots and lime flowers, the second -- of marshmallow roots, Iceland moss and lime flowers. The methods for identification and assay of the active substances in the compounds were applied. The purity of the mixtures was regulated by limitation of the loss on drying, total ash, microbial contamination, contamination with radionuclides, heavy metals, pesticides and foreign matter. The expiry date of both cough-relieving herbal teas was approved to be 2 years.
There was a purpose to create a composite ointment of proteolytic and antimicrobial activity, the formulation of which would contain the proteolytic enzyme procelan and the antimicrobial preparation ...with wide spectrum of action dioxidin. During the development of prodioxin ointment by means of biological experiments the optimal concentration of dioxidin was evaluated; it was 1 percent. The optimal dispersity value of dioxidin particles was estimated by dialysis through a semipermeable membrane. The best release of dioxidine from prodioxin ointment occurred, when it was pulverized to particles with diameter 5-10 mm. The method of assay of dioxidin was modified for the ointment. The physicomechanical properties of the prodioxin ointment: flowability, colloidal stability, thermostability and rheological properties were examined. The investigated ointment is non-newtonian in character, e.g. an elastic and plastic system and may be intended for use in dermatological practice. Medicinal enzymic and antimicrobial effects of the prodioxin ointment were compared with the healing effect of Iruksol ointment. The medicinal effect of the prodioxin ointment exceeded that of Iruksol ointment by one day. Judging by the results of the physicochemical analysis a conclusion can be made that the prodioxin ointment is stable for two years at room temperature.

Medicinal herbs in tea for throat clearing are used from ancient times. Taking into consideration the bronchial mucus secretion stimulating and antispasmodic, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic and ...stimulating effect on the ciliated epithelium two new formulations of throat clearing herbal tea were originated. The first formulation consists of liquorice roots, sweet fennel and thyme, and the second one consists of pine gemmae, thyme and elder flowers. The methods for identification and assay of the active substances of the components were adapted. The purity of the mixtures was regulated by the limitation of the loss on drying, total ash, microbial contamination, contamination with radionuclides, heavy metals, pesticides and foreign matter. Expiry date of both throat clearing herbal teas was confirmed to be 2 years.
When investigating the release of procelan from diphilic, hydrophobic and hydrophilic basis we determined that the best release of the active substance is from hydrophilic basis. The macrogolic base ...when compared with methylcellulosic one shows clearly expressed osmotic properties and therefore is more suitable as a base for ointments intended to treat suppurative wounds. This was confirmed by treatment of experimentally excited suppurative wounds on rabbits. Hydrophilic ointments containing lyophilized procelan powders from 4 per cent to 20 per cent were examined. The most remarkable therapeutic effect reached with the ointment of macrogolic base, optimal concentration of procelan being 10 per cent. The method of assay of procelan in the ointment was created. The created dosage form is stable for three years at room temperature.
Today phytopreparations take important place in the modern therapy. There are 6475 medicinal preparations registered in Lithuania (2 January, 2003). Out of them, 7.38 % or 482 are preparations herbal ...and animal origin. Lithuanian companies produce the biggest part of these drugs. Tea is the most popular drug form produced from medicinal plants. There are 4 producers of medicinal teas in Lithuania: "Acorus Calamus", "Svencioniu vaistazoles", "Herba Humana" and "Karvelio terapijos-fitoterapijos imone". Preparations of herbal origin are generally used in treatment of digestive, respiratory tract, and nervous system problems. Twenty-six different drug forms are produced from medicinal plants.
The natural vegetable resources of Republic of Lithuania can be supplied by imported hawthorn species, subspecies and varieties, not growing naturally in the territory of country, but well growing ...and able to produce the crude drug with local conditions of the climate.
Determinate amounts of phenolic substances (favonoid glycosides and phenolic acids) in the flowers and leaves of collected species of genus Crataegus and Crataegomespilus.
Different examples of crude drug from some Lithuanian regions were extracted with 96% of ethanol and flavonoids were detected spectroscopically and with HPLC (High performance liquid chromatography).
In leaves and flowers were found different quantities of common amounts of flavonoids (1.07-2.53%) and different quantities of individual substances: flavonoids (hyperosid, vitexin-O-rhamnosid, rutin, quercitrin, quercetin, vitexin) and phenolic acids (chlorogenic and caffeic acids).
Flowers and leaves of hawthorn species, introduced in Lithuania, can be used for preparation of crude drugs procurements; the marks of phytochemical compounds of phenotypes from different genetic lines are sufficient grounds for planning of production of crude drug with special phytotherapeutic influences.
Leaves, flowers and fruits of single-styled hawthorn are used for production of pharmaceuticals with cardiotonic, coronary vasodilatoric and hypotensive action. Amount of flavonoids accumulated in ...crude drug of hawthorn is a parameter of quality.
To establish the difference in amounts of flavonoids accumulated in the crude drug of single-styled hawthorn.
Different examples of crude material from some Lithuanian regions were extracted with ethanol; flavonoids were measured by spectroscopic method and by HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography).
From 0.77% to 2.80% of flavonoids are determined in the leaves and flowers; amounts of hyperosid were 0.16-0.87%; vitexin-o-rhamnosid 0.14-0.40%; rutin 0.10-0.19%. Flavonoids maximum percent was determinate in crude material examples collected at the single-styled hawthorn flowering time; the decline of amounts of flavonoids accumulated in the crude material of hawthorn was determined from May to August (realization of correlation coefficient r=-0.90). Hyperosid maximum percent was determined in crude material examples collected at flowering time; the decline of amounts of hyperosid accumulated in the crude material was determined from May to August (r=-0,94). Amounts of rutin and vitexin-o-rhamnosid in leaves were less than flowers; there was the decline of amounts of rutin and vitexin-o-rhamnosid in leaves from May to August. The percent of flavonoids 0.09 to 0.24 is determined in fruits.
Lithuanian single-styled hawthorn populations can supply quality crude material from May to August; the bigger amounts of flavonoids were determined in crude drug examples collected at flowering time.
