The laser induced non-destructive photoacoustic technique has been employed to measure the thermal diffusivity of dental resin. The thermal diffusivity value was evaluated by knowing the transition ...frequency between the thermally thin to thermally thick region from the log-log plot of photoacoustic amplitude versus chopping frequency. Analysis of the data was carried out on the basis of the one-dimensional model of Rosencwaig and Gersho. The present investigation reveals that amount of monomer has great influence on the propagation of heat carriers and hence on the thermal diffusivity value.
Human skin xenografts were established on the subscapular area of skin of nude (nu/nu NIH-Swiss background) mice. When treated with benzoapyrene diol epoxide I (BPDE I), specific carcinogen-DNA ...adducts were formed. Separation and identification of these adducts by the 32P-postlabeling technique indicated that the 7R- and 7S-BPDE I-dpGp adducts were the major adducts. Xenografts pretreated with either allantoin of anthralin showed an increase in the major 7R- and 7S-BPDE I adducts compared to only BPDE I treatment. Likewise, we observed an increase in the quantity of different minor adducts. The ratios between the minor and major adducts in the pretreated grafts remained consistent with the ratio in the grafts treated with BPDE I only. We conclude that these modulators induce cells in the xenograft to enter S phase of the cell cycle. Moreover, we observed that these compounds altered the quantity of the minor carcinogen-DNA adducts without altering the overall ratios between the major 7R- and 7S-BPDE I-dpGp adducts and the minor carcinogen-DNA adducts.
Fifteen patients with a history of painful episodes of sickle cell disease were given training in progressive relaxation, thermal biofeedback, cognitive strategies, and self-hypnosis to help them ...develop self-management skills to relieve pain. Results show a 38.5% reduction in the number of emergency room visits, a 31% reduction in the number of hospitalizations, and a 50% reduction in the inpatient stay during the 6 months since the beginning of therapy compared to 6 months prior to therapy. Analgesic intake was reduced by 29% for those who were using it regularly. This is a preliminary study, and the results are considered only as suggestive of the potential use of biofeedback therapy and behavioral management in alleviating painful episodes in sickle cell disease.
