The accurate and rapid estimation of canopy nitrogen content (CNC) in crops is the key to optimizing in-season nitrogen fertilizer application in precision agriculture. However, the determination of ...CNC from field sampling data for leaf area index (LAI), canopy photosynthetic pigments (CPP; including chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and carotenoids) and leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) can be time-consuming and costly. Here we evaluated the use of high-precision unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral imagery for estimating the LAI, CPP and CNC of winter wheat over the whole growth period. A total of 23 spectral features (SFs; five original spectrum bands, 17 vegetation indices and the gray scale of the RGB image) and eight texture features (TFs; contrast, entropy, variance, mean, homogeneity, dissimilarity, second moment, and correlation) were selected as inputs for the models. Six machine learning methods, i.e., multiple stepwise regression (MSR), support vector regression (SVR), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), Gaussian process regression (GPR), back propagation neural network (BPNN) and radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), were compared for the retrieval of winter wheat LAI, CPP and CNC values, and a double-layer model was proposed for estimating CNC based on LAI and CPP. The results showed that the inversion of winter wheat LAI, CPP and CNC by the combination of SFs+TFs greatly improved the estimation accuracy compared with that by using only the SFs. The RBFNN and BPNN models outperformed the other machine learning models in estimating winter wheat LAI, CPP and CNC. The proposed double-layer models (R2=0.67–0.89, RMSE=13.63–23.71 mg g–1, MAE=10.75–17.59 mg g–1) performed better than the direct inversion models (R2=0.61–0.80, RMSE=18.01–25.12 mg g–1, MAE=12.96–18.88 mg g–1) in estimating winter wheat CNC. The best winter wheat CNC accuracy was obtained by the double-layer RBFNN model with SFs+TFs as inputs (R2=0.89, RMSE=13.63 mg g–1, MAE=10.75 mg g–1). The results of this study can provide guidance for the accurate and rapid determination of winter wheat canopy nitrogen content in the field.
Abstract Background Intraindividual blood pressure (BP) fluctuates dynamically over time. Previous studies suggested an adverse link between greater visit-to-visit variability in systolic blood ...pressure (SBP) and various outcomes. However, these studies have significant limitations, such as a small size, inclusion of selected populations, and restricted outcomes. Objectives This study investigated the association of increased visit-to-visit variability and all-cause mortality, cardiovascular events, and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in a large cohort of U.S. veterans. Methods From among 3,285,684 U.S. veterans with and without hypertension and normal estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) during 2005 and 2006, we identified 2,865,157 patients who had 8 or more outpatient BP measurements. Systolic blood pressure variability (SBPV) was measured using the SD of all SBP values (normally distributed) in 1 individual. Associations of SD quartiles (<10.3, 10.3 to 12.7, 12.7 to 15.6, and ≥15.6 mm Hg) with all-cause mortality, incident coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and ESRD was examined using Cox models adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics, baseline eGFR, comorbidities, body mass index, SBP, diastolic BP, and antihypertensive medication use. Results Several sociodemographic variables (older age, male sex, African-American race, divorced or widowed status) and clinical characteristics (lower baseline eGFR, higher SBP and diastolic BP), and comorbidities (presence of diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and lung disease) were all associated with higher intraindividual SBPV. The multivariable adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for SD quartiles 2 through 4 (compared with the first quartile) associated with all-cause mortality, CHD, stroke, and ESRD were incrementally higher. Conclusions Higher SBPV in individuals with and without hypertension was associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality, CHD, stroke, and ESRD. Further studies are needed to determine interventions that can lower SBPV and their impact on adverse health outcomes.
An in-depth study on the characteristics of coke in the hearths of blast furnaces is of great significance for explaining the mechanism of coke deterioration in blast furnaces. In the present work, ...the changes in macromorphology, degree of graphitization, and microstructure of the coke taken from different hearth locations of a 5,800 m3 superlarge blast furnace during its intermediate repair period were systematically studied. Significant differences were found between cokes obtained from the edge ("edge coke") and from the center ("center coke") of the hearth in terms of properties and degradation mechanisms. Edge coke was severely eroded by liquid metal, and only a small amount of slag was detected in the coke porosity, whereas center coke was basically free from erosion by liquid metal, and a large amount of slag was detected in the coke porosity. The degree of graphitization of edge coke was higher than that of center coke. The carburizing effect of liquid metal was the main cause of the degradation of edge coke and made it smaller or even disappear. Center coke was degraded due to the combination of two factors: slag inserted into micropores on the surface of center coke loosened the surface structure; and graphite-like flakes that appeared on the center coke surface lowered the strength and caused cracks in the surface.
An estimated 4 million Americans have been exposed to the hepatitis C virus (HCV). The risks of incident and progressive chronic kidney disease and of mortality in patients with normal kidney ...function infected with HCV are unclear. In a nationally representative cohort of 100,518 HCV+ and 920,531 HCV– US veterans with normal baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), we examined the association of HCV infection with (1) all‐cause mortality, (2) incidence of decreased kidney function (defined as eGFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and 25% decrease in eGFR), (3) end‐stage renal disease, and (4) rate of kidney function decline. Associations were examined in naive and adjusted Cox models (for time‐to‐event analyses) and logistic regression models (for slopes), with sequential adjustments for important confounders. Propensity‐matched cohort analysis was used in sensitivity analyses. The patients' age was 54.5 ± 13.1 (mean ± standard deviation) years, 22% were black, 92% were male, and the baseline eGFR was 88 ± 16 mL/min/1.73 m2. In multivariable adjusted models HCV infection was associated with a 2.2‐fold higher mortality (fully adjusted hazard ratio = 2.17, 95% confidence interval CI 2.13‐2.21), a 15% higher incidence of decreased kidney function (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.15, 95% CI 1.12‐1.17), a 22% higher risk of steeper slopes of eGFR (adjusted odds ratio = 1.22, 95% CI 1.19‐1.26), and a 98% higher hazard of end‐stage renal disease (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.98, 95% CI 1.81‐2.16). Quantitatively similar results were found in propensity‐matched cohort analyses. Conclusions: Infection with HCV is associated with higher mortality risk, incidence of decreased kidney function, and progressive loss of kidney function; randomized controlled trials are warranted to determine whether treatment of HCV infection can prevent the development and progression of chronic kidney disease and improve patient outcomes. Organic pollutants, such as polychlorinated dJbenzo-p-dioxins and polychlofinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlodnated biphenyls (PCBs), antibiotics, herbicides, and bisphenol A (BPA), are ...commonly found in agricultural environments. They are released into the environment as a result of their use for human health purposes and farm management activities, and are often discharged as waste-water effluents. Most of these organic pollutants are taken up by plants through roots and leaves, and when they enter the tissue, they cause serious damage to the plants. Although the toxicity of organic pollutants to plants, especially to plant cells, has been intensively studied, a systematic review of these studies is lacking. Here we review researches on the toxicity of organic pollutants, their uptake, and translocation in plants. Our objective is to assemble existing knowledge concerning the interaction of organic pollutants with plants, which should be useful for the development of plant-based systems for removing pollutants from aquatic and agricultural environments.
Liver fibrosis reflects sustained liver injury often from multiple, simultaneous factors. Whilst the presence of mild fibrosis on biopsy can be a reassuring finding, the identification of advanced ...fibrosis is critical to the management of patients with chronic liver disease. This necessity has lead to a reliance on liver biopsy which itself is an imperfect test and poorly accepted by patients. The development of robust tools to non-invasively assess liver fibrosis has dramatically enhanced clinical decision making in patients with chronic liver disease, allowing a rapid and informed judgment of disease stage and prognosis. Should a liver biopsy be required, the appropriateness is clearer and the diagnostic yield is greater with the use of these adjuncts. While a number of non-invasive liver fibrosis markers are now used in routine practice, a steady stream of innovative approaches exists. With improvement in the reliability, reproducibility and feasibility of these markers, their potential role in disease management is increasing. Moreover, their adoption into clinical trials as outcome measures reflects their validity and dynamic nature. This review will summarize and appraise the current and novel non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis, both blood and imaging based, and look at their prospective application in everyday clinical care.
