This paper deals with the quasi-instantaneous determination (in a single-step response time) of apparent, active, and reactive (i.e., blind and distortion) power mean values including the total power ...factor, total harmonic distortion, and phase shift of fundamentals of a power electronic and electrical system (PEES) using the ip-iq method, which is the main contribution of the paper. The power components’ mean values are investigated during the transient and steady states. The power components’ mean values can be determined directly from phase current and voltage quantities, using an integral calculus over one period within the next calculation step and using moving average and moving rms techniques (or digital filtering). Consequently, the power factor can be evaluated with known values of a phase shift of fundamentals (using a Fourier analysis). The results of this study show how a distortion power component during transients is generated even under a harmonic supply and linear resistive–inductive load. The paper contains a theoretical base, modeling, and simulation for the three and single phases of the transients in power electronic systems. The worked-out results can be used to determine and size any PES. The presented approach brings a detailed time waveform verified by simulations in Matlab/Simulink 2022a and the Real-time HW Simulator Plecs RT Box 1.
The popularity of multiphase drives is increasing due to the growing interest in drives with more than three phases. One promising topology is the multiphase matrix converters, which enable the ...implementation of a single-stage AC/AC power conversion system with bidirectional power flow capability. In this paper, we present the implementation of indirect control for a practical sample of the direct matrix converter. To reduce the overall cost of the control solution for these types of converters, we utilized low-cost FPGA and DSP. The usage of only DSP itself was not possible due to low number of available PWM output needed for 3 × 5 MxC driving. Another reason is commutation, which must be precise and fast to avoid any hazardous states in the converter. Due to these problems, the authors decided to implement an algorithm of a combination of DSP and FPGA, where FPGA is used for time critical operations. The indirect algorithm treats the converter as two separate parts, the rectifier and the inverter, with the DC-LINK being fictitious. The matrix converter is composed of compact modules, and the entire system is verified. The practical verification demonstrates that matrix converters can produce a wide range of output frequencies and achieve input power factor control. Finally, we compare and review the practical model with the simulation model, examining efficiency and other parameters.
Multiphase electric motors in cooperation with power semiconductor converters belong to the future of electric drives. This is because of their better properties compared to three-phase motors, such ...as better fault tolerance. How a multiphase motor will behave in a fault state is very important when using such motors in EV and HEV. This is the basis of the research in this article; we investigate the options for operating a five-phase motor in a fault condition in order to improve the drive qualities during fault operation. The complete mathematical expressions of the five-phase induction motor model in the normal operation as well as in fault operation and also the control modification to improve the properties of the drive are presented. The new five-phase field-oriented control is next described, which improves the drive qualities in four-phase operation and is the first fundamental aspect of the study. Another important aspect of the project is the development of a specific control on a real motor, followed by measurements of properties of a five-phase motor in normal and fault operation of one phase without and with control modification to enhance drive characteristics. The qualities and appropriateness of employing a five-phase motor as a drive in EV and HEV are then determined by comparing these results. Finally, a comparison of motor attributes is shown with and without control adjustment.
The power loss estimation is a crucial step for power electronics design, especially for high-power-density systems. Many mathematical approaches are known for power loss estimation, but the system ...design time can be lowered significantly if a simulation approach is used. This paper discusses the MATLAB-based simulation method for estimating power losses in the three-phase VSI. This simulation is using a real characteristic of the used IGBT transistors for power loss estimation. Next, the model uses the simulated power losses and calculates temperatures at different points in the simulated model. For the visualization, Fusion360 was used to simulate the thermal spreading at the heatsink. Finally, the inverter power losses are measured at the different loads to confirm the accuracy of the model. The temperature of the heatsink is measured with a thermal imaging camera and surface mounted probes.
This paper discusses a new approach for building a compact all-in-one matrix converter module based on SiC semiconductors arranged in a common source connection. The used transistors are in the D2PAK ...package. The design of the module is divided into two parts, namely a power module designed at one-layer aluminum substrate printed circuit board (PCB) to ensure good thermal performance and voltage isolation between the module and heatsink. The second board is responsible for the SiC driving and is mounted at the top of the power PCB and consists of metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) drivers, isolated power supplies, a current direction detection circuit, and current value sensors. In the paper, the proper function of the SiC MOSFET drivers, current direction detection, and current measurement sensors were evaluated. Finally, 3D design together with the final prototype is presented. The modules contain three bidirectional cells for interconnection three input voltage sources and one output phase. The uniqueness and novelty of the presented module are the compactness and easy expandability of the module to achieve higher power outputs and multiphase applications such as five phase machines.
This article addressed the problem of matrix converters (MxC), specifically the investigation of power losses and matrix converter efficiency in a 3 × 5 arrangement. In today’s modern world, ...efficiency is very important; hence, power loss and efficiency analysis are important throughout the design process of modern semiconductor converters. The ability to evaluate power losses more quickly using the simulation approach can greatly reduce the amount of time necessary for the design, in comparison with numerical analysis. The described model employed contemporary SiC semiconductors, which offer substantial benefits over IGBT transistors. The 3 × 5 converter model was shown, along with a study of power losses in various elements of the converter, such as the power circuit, input filter, and so on. A summary of the simulated findings was offered at the end of the study, along with the benefits and drawbacks of employing SiC semiconductors in bidirectional switches for matrix converters.
In this article, the practical comparison of the operational performance of the modular (or multiport) and non-modular bidirectional buck/boost (bi-BB) DC/DC converter is realized. The main ...contribution of the work is the evaluation of both concepts based on various aspects, considering the qualitative indicators of the systems relevant for microgrids. Here, we discuss efficiency, electrical properties, costs, and component values. At the same time, critical comparisons are provided for converters based on SiC and GaN technology (non-modular high-voltage SiC-based dual-interleaved converter and modular low-voltage GaN-based). The concepts are specific with their operating frequency, whereby for each solution, the switching frequency is different and directly influences relevant components. The efficiency, overall system volume, output voltage ripple, and input current ripple are compared mutually between both concepts with a dependency on power delivery. These factors, together with overall volume and costs, are very important considering modern converters for microgrid systems. The summary of pros and cons is realized for each of the proposed converters, whereby the evaluation criterion is reflected within the electrical properties targeting microgrid application.
The paper deals with the determination and compensation of non-active torques of parallel HEV using an auxiliary electrical PMSM or IM motor. The non-active oscillating torque generating by the ICE ...engine was estimated, and consequently, the compensating torque component of the current was determined. Based on real measured data, the four regimes of operation have been investigated: compensating non-active torques, parallel operation, regenerating for PMSM, and both parallel operations, together with compensation. Using of p-q theory, the power of fundamental harmonic is presented by average values PAV, QAV of total power waveforms p(t), and q(t). Worked-out simulation results are used for sizing and dimensioning of PMSM machine, VSI inverter, and traction accumulator-battery. Circuit simulator Matlab/Simulink was used for all simulation experiments.

A system compensated by switched capacitors as well as an active power filter shows a possibility to compensate for distortion and reactive power components in the next calculation step. Worked-out results can be used for the right determination and sizing of any PES. The presented approach brings the detailed time-waveform and improved quality of electrical quantities (time-waveforms), and through quasi-instantaneous (single step) response time of compensation, minimizes nascent overvoltage of the system.
