Laser wakefield accelerators promise to revolutionize many areas of accelerator science. However, one of the greatest challenges to their widespread adoption is the difficulty in control and ...optimization of the accelerator outputs due to coupling between input parameters and the dynamic evolution of the accelerating structure. Here, we use machine learning techniques to automate a 100 MeV-scale accelerator, which optimized its outputs by simultaneously varying up to six parameters including the spectral and spatial phase of the laser and the plasma density and length. Most notably, the model built by the algorithm enabled optimization of the laser evolution that might otherwise have been missed in single-variable scans. Subtle tuning of the laser pulse shape caused an 80% increase in electron beam charge, despite the pulse length changing by just 1%.
Background: To determine the clinical and pathologic prognostic factors in surgically treated patients with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB–IIA small cell ...neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine cervix (SCNEC). Patients and methods: We retrospectively reviewed a total of 68 patients with FIGO stage IB–IIA SCNEC surgically treated from January 1997 to December 2003 in Korea. Results: Of the 68 patients, 43 had FIGO stage IB1 SCNEC, 15 had stage IB2, and 10 had stage IIA. Seven were treated with radical surgery alone; 11 with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by radical surgery; 24 with radical surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy; and 26 with radical surgery followed by adjuvant radiation or chemoradiation. After a median follow-up of 44 months (range, 6–113 months), the 2-year and 5-year survival rates for all patients were 64.6% and 46.6%, respectively. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that FIGO stage was predictive of poor prognosis. Patients who received NACT showed poorer prognosis than those who did not receive NACT. Adjuvant chemoradiation did not improve survival compared with adjuvant chemotherapy alone. Conclusions: FIGO stage may act as a surrogate for factors prognostic of survival. Primary radical surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is the preferred treatment modality for patients with early stage SCNEC.
Aims
Aggressive meningioma remains incurable with neither chemo‐ nor targeted therapies proven effective, largely due to unidentified genetic alterations and/or aberrant oncogenic pathways driving ...the disease progression. In this study, we examined the expression and function of Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) transcription factor during meningioma progression.
Methods
Human meningioma samples (n = 101) were collected, followed by Western blotting, quantitative PCR, immunohistochemical and progression‐free survival (PFS) analyses. For in vitro assays, FOXM1 was overexpressed or knocked‐down in benign (SF4433 and SF4068) or malignant (SF3061 and IOMM‐Lee) human meningioma cell lines respectively. For in vivo studies, siomycin A (a FOXM1 inhibitor)‐pretreated or control IOMM‐Lee cells were implanted subcutaneously in nude mice.
Results
FOXM1 expression was increased in higher grades of meningioma and correlated with the mitotic index in the tumour tissue. Moreover, FOXM1 was increased in recurrent meningioma compared with the matched primary lesions. The patients who had higher FOXM1 expression had shorter PFS. In the subsequent in vitro assays, knockdown of FOXM1 in malignant meningioma cell lines resulted in decreased tumour cell proliferation, angiogenesis and invasion, potentially via regulation of β‐catenin, cyclin D1, p21, interleukin‐8, vascular endothelial growth factor‐A, PLAU, and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition‐related genes, whereas overexpression of FOXM1 in benign meningioma cell lines had the opposite effects. Last, suppression of FOXM1 using a pharmacological inhibitor, siomycin A, decreased tumour growth in an in vivo mouse model.
Conclusions
Our data demonstrate that FOXM1 is a key transcription factor regulating oncogenic signalling pathways in meningioma progression, and a promising therapeutic target for aggressive meningioma.

By applying a voltage lower than Vth to the other cells, we can keep the other cells in the off state and prevent interference between the selected cell and the others.
We present new constraints on the dark matter-induced annual modulation signal using 1.7 years of COSINE-100 data with a total exposure of 97.7 kg yr. The COSINE-100 experiment, consisting of 106 kg ...of NaI(Tl) target material, is designed to carry out a model-independent test of DAMA/LIBRA's claim of WIMP discovery by searching for the same annual modulation signal using the same NaI(Tl) target. The crystal data show a 2.7 cpd/kg/keV background rate on average in the 2-6 keV energy region of interest. Using a χ-squared minimization method we observe best fit values for modulation amplitude and phase of 0.0092±0.0067 cpd/kg/keV and 127.2±45.9 d, respectively.
Objectives: To examine the prevalence of sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) as defined by different indices, including appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM)/height2, skeletal muscle mass index ...(SMI) and residuals for Korean adults, and to explore the association between SO and metabolic syndrome. Methods: Our study sample included 526 participants (328 women, 198 men) for whom complete data on body composition were collected using available dual X-ray absorptiometry. Modified National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria were used to identify the individuals with metabolic syndrome. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia and SO is higher in older adults. Using two s.d. of ASM/height2 below reference values from young, healthy adults as a definition of sarcopenia, the prevalence of sarcopenia and SO was 6.3% and 1.3% in older (60 years) men and 4.1% and 0.8% in older women, respectively. The prevalence of sarcopenia using the residuals method was 15.4% in older men and 22.3% in older women. In addition, using two s.d. of SMI, the prevalence of sarcopenia and SO was 5.1% and 5.1%, respectively, in older men and 14.2% and 12.5%, respectively, in older women. Among women, SO subjects defined by the SMI had three times the risk of metabolic syndrome (odds ratios (OR)=3.24, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.21-8.66) and non-sarcopenic obese subjects had approximately twice the risk of metabolic syndrome (OR=2.17, 95% CI=1.22-3.88) compared with normal subjects. Similar trends were observed in men. Conclusion: The prevalence and cutoff values of sarcopenia and SO in the Korean population were evaluated using different methods. Among the different indices of sarcopenia and SO, SO only defined using the SMI was associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome. As the Korean population gets older and more obese, the problematics of SO need to be elucidate.
The COSINE-100 dark matter search experiment is an array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors located in the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L). To understand measured backgrounds in the NaI(Tl) crystals ...we have performed Monte Carlo simulations using the Geant4 toolkit and developed background models for each crystal that consider contributions from both internal and external sources, including cosmogenic nuclides. The background models are based on comparisons of measurement data with Monte Carlo simulations that are guided by a campaign of material assays and are used to evaluate backgrounds and identify their sources. The average background level for the six crystals (70 kg total mass) that are studied is 3.5 counts/day/keV/kg in the (2–6) keV energy interval. The dominant contributors in this energy region are found to be

▶ Present paper demonstrate the electrochromic properties (EC) of NiO thin films of different thickness with change in deposition time by a simple and cost effective chemical bath deposition method. ...▶ Nanoporous NiO thin films were investigated as a function of film thickness in both aqueous (KOH) and non aqueous (LiClO4-PC) electrolyte. ▶ The increment in the transmittance modulations with increase in film thickness leads to an increase in coloration efficiency (CE) to about 95cm2/C, which is two times more than that observed in KOH with excellent electrochemical stability upto 3000c/b cycles in LiClO4-PC electrolyte. ▶ This suggest that electrochromic properties of the NiO films can be tailored merely by controlling the film thickness and choice of suitable electrolyte which will be potentially useful for designing complementary EC devices.
Electrochromic properties of chemically bath deposited nanoporous NiO thin films were investigated as a function of film thickness using Ni sulphate precursor, aqueous ammonia and potassium persulphate as complexing and oxidizing agents respectively. The films were characterized for their structural, morphological, optical and electrochromic properties using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and optical transmittance studies. X-ray diffraction patterns show that the films are polycrystalline, consisting of NiO cubic phase. Infrared spectroscopy results show the presence of free hydroxyl ion and water in NiO thin films. SEM micrographs revealed nanoporous nature composed of interconnected nanoporous network, forming well defined 3D nano envelopes. The optical band gap energy was found to be decreased from 3.22 to 2.80eV with increasing film thickness. The electrochromic properties of all the films were investigated in aqueous (KOH) and non aqueous (LiClO4-PC) electrolyte by means of cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronocoulometry (CC) and optical studies. The transmittance modulations or optical density differences during the coloring/bleaching process were found to be increased with the film thickness. This increment in optical differences led to an increase in coloration efficiency (CE) to about 95cm2/C, which is two times more than that observed in KOH and response time of 2.9s for bleaching (reduction) and 3.5s for coloration (oxidation) observed for the film deposited at 60min with excellent electrochemical stability up to 3000 c/b cycles in LiClO4-PC electrolyte.
A Mt. Everest ice core spanning 1860–2000 AD and analyzed at high resolution for black carbon (BC) using a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) demonstrates strong seasonality, with peak ...concentrations during the winter‐spring, and low concentrations during the summer monsoon season. BC concentrations from 1975–2000 relative to 1860–1975 have increased approximately threefold, indicating that BC from anthropogenic sources is being transported to high elevation regions of the Himalaya. The timing of the increase in BC is consistent with BC emission inventory data from South Asia and the Middle East, however since 1990 the ice core BC record does not indicate continually increasing BC concentrations. The Everest BC and dust records provide information about absorbing impurities that can contribute to glacier melt by reducing the albedo of snow and ice. There is no increasing trend in dust concentrations since 1860, and estimated surface radiative forcing due to BC in snow exceeds that of dust in snow. This suggests that a reduction in BC emissions may be an effective means to reduce the effect of absorbing impurities on snow albedo and melt, which affects Himalayan glaciers and the availability of water resources in major Asian rivers.
Transition-metal-catalyzed or metal-free azide–alkyne cycloadditions are methods to access 1,4- or 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles. Although the copper-catalyzed cycloaddition to access ...1,4-disubstituted products has been applied to biomolecular reaction systems, the azide–alkyne cycloaddition to access the complementary 1,5-regioisomers under aqueous and ambient conditions remains a challenge due to limited substrate scope or moisture-/air-sensitive catalysts. Herein, we report a method to access 1,5-disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles using a Cp2Ni/Xantphos catalytic system. The reaction proceeds both in water and organic solvents at room temperature. This protocol is simple and scalable with a broad substrate scope including both aliphatic and aromatic substrates. Moreover, triazoles attached with carbohydrates or amino acids are prepared via this cycloaddition.
