The Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) collaboration has developed low-background NaI(Tl) crystals that are suitable for the direct detection of WIMP dark matter. Building on experience accumulated ...during the KIMS-CsI programs, the KIMS-NaI experiment will consist of a 200 kg NaI(Tl) crystal array surrounded by layers of shielding structures and will be operated at the Yangyang underground laboratory. The goal is to provide an unambiguous test of the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signature. Measurements of six prototype crystals show progress in the reduction of internal contamination from radioisotopes. Based on our understanding of these measurements, we expect to achieve a background level in the final detector configuration that is less than 1 count/day/keV/kg for recoil energies around 2 keV. The annual modulation sensitivity for the KIMS-NaI experiment shows that an unambiguous 7
σ
test of the DAMA/LIBRA signature would be possible with a 600 kg year exposure with this system.
This phase II study investigated the efficacy and safety of everolimus, an inhibitor of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), in locally advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer.
Patients with thyroid ...cancer of any histology that was resistant or not appropriate for 131I received everolimus 10 mg daily orally until unacceptable toxicity or disease progression. The primary end point was disease control rate partial response (PR) + stable response ≥12 weeks. Secondary end points included response rates, clinical benefit (PD + durable stable disease (SD), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival, duration of response, and safety.
Thirty-eight of 40 enrolled patients were evaluable for efficacy. The disease control rate was 81% and two (5%) patients achieved objective response; their duration of response was 21+ and 24+ weeks. Stable disease (SD) and progressive disease was reported in 76% and 17% of patients, respectively. Seventeen (45%) patients showed durable SD (≥24 weeks) and clinical benefit was reported in 19 (50%) patients. Median PFS was 47 weeks 95% confidence interval (CI) 14.9–78.5. Calcitonin, CEA, and thyroglobulin concentrations were ≥50% lower than baseline in three (30%) and four (44%) patients with medullary thyroid cancer and five (33%) patients with PTC, respectively. The most common treatment-related adverse events were mucositis (84%), anorexia (44%), and aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase elevation (26%).
Everolimus had a limited activity with low response rate in locally advanced or metastatic thyroid cancer. Reasonable clinical benefit rate and safety profile may warrant further investigation.

Post transplant infusion of donor-type natural killer (NK) cells has been shown to have an anti-leukemia-enhancing effect without evoking GVHD in murine hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) ...models. Here, we tested 14 patients (age, 23-65 years), 12 with acute leukemia and 2 with myelodysplastic syndrome, who underwent HLA-mismatched HCT and subsequently received donor NK cell infusions. Cell donors (age, 16-51 years), comprising seven siblings, five offspring, and two mothers of the patients, underwent growth factor-mobilized leukapheresis for 3-5 days. Cells collected on the first 2-4 days were used for HCT, whereas those collected on the last day were CD34 selected by magnetic-activated cell sorting (median, 2.22 x 10(6) cells/kg; range, 0.29-5.66). Donor NK cells were generated from the CD34(+) cells by ex vivo cell culture over a 6-week period (median, 9.28 x 10(6) cells/kg; range, 0.33-24.50; CD122/CD56(+) 64%; CD3(+) 1.0%; and viability 88%). There were no signs of acute toxicity in patients infused with these cells 6-7 weeks post transplant. Overall, one and five patients developed acute and chronic GVHD during post transplant period, respectively. These results showed that clinical-grade donor NK cell production from CD34(+) cells is feasible.
The aortic valve exhibits complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomy and heterogeneity essential for the long-term efficient biomechanical function. These are, however, challenging to mimic in de novo ...engineered living tissue valve strategies. We present a novel simultaneous 3D printing/photocrosslinking technique for rapidly engineering complex, heterogeneous aortic valve scaffolds. Native anatomic and axisymmetric aortic valve geometries (root wall and tri-leaflets) with 12-22 mm inner diameters (ID) were 3D printed with poly-ethylene glycol-diacrylate (PEG-DA) hydrogels (700 or 8000 MW) supplemented with alginate. 3D printing geometric accuracy was quantified and compared using Micro-CT. Porcine aortic valve interstitial cells (PAVIC) seeded scaffolds were cultured for up to 21 days. Results showed that blended PEG-DA scaffolds could achieve over tenfold range in elastic modulus (5.3±0.9 to 74.6±1.5 kPa). 3D printing times for valve conduits with mechanically contrasting hydrogels were optimized to 14 to 45 min, increasing linearly with conduit diameter. Larger printed valves had greater shape fidelity (93.3±2.6, 85.1±2.0 and 73.3±5.2% for 22, 17 and 12 mm ID porcine valves; 89.1±4.0, 84.1±5.6 and 66.6±5.2% for simplified valves). PAVIC seeded scaffolds maintained near 100% viability over 21 days. These results demonstrate that 3D hydrogel printing with controlled photocrosslinking can rapidly fabricate anatomical heterogeneous valve conduits that support cell engraftment.
Migraine carries an increased risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases that cannot be explained by traditional cardiovascular risk factors. The circulating endothelial progenitor cell ...(EPC) number is a surrogate biologic marker of vascular function, and diminished EPC counts are associated with higher cardiovascular risk. We investigated whether abnormalities in EPC levels and functions are present in migraine patients.
Consecutive headache patients (n =166) were enrolled, including those with tension type headache (TTH; n = 74), migraine without aura (MO; n = 67), and migraine with aura (MA; n = 25). EPC colony-forming units in peripheral blood samples and migratory capacity to chemoattractants (stromal cell-derived factor 1 and vascular endothelial growth factor) and cellular senescence levels were assayed in risk factor-matched subjects (n = 6 per group).
The TTH group had more cardiovascular risk factors, more headache days, and higher Framingham risk scores than the other two groups. Mean numbers of EPC colony-forming units were 47.8 +/- 24.3 in TTH, 20.4 +/-22.2 in MO, and 8.6 +/- 10.1 in MA patients (p < 0.001 in TTH vs MO; p = 0.001 in MO vs MA). EPC colony counts of normal subjects (n = 37) were not significantly different from those with TTH. Multiple linear regression models identified only MO, MA, and the presence of migraine (MO + MA) as significant predictors of EPC levels. In addition, EPCs from migraine patients (MO and MA) showed reduced migratory capacity and increased cellular senescence compared with EPCs from TTH or normal subjects.
Circulating endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) numbers and functions are reduced in migraine patients, suggesting that EPCs can be an underlying link between migraine and cardiovascular risk.
Summary
Background
Little is known about factors affecting the quality of life (QoL) of patients with vitiligo, and previous studies have shown conflicting results.
Objectives
To explore the QoL of ...patients with vitiligo and to identify factors affecting QoL.
Methods
A nationwide questionnaire‐based study was conducted with 1123 patients with vitiligo recruited from 21 hospitals in Korea from July 2015 to June 2016. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire for demographic information and the Skindex‐29 instrument. Mild or severely impaired QoL in patients with vitiligo was assessed according to each domain (symptoms, functioning and emotions) of Skindex‐29. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the factors associated with QoL.
Results
Of the enrolled participants, 609 were male and 514 female, with a mean age of 49·8 years (range 20–84). The median duration of disease was 3·0 years (range 0–60). Using multivariate logistic regression modelling, the involvement of visible body parts and a larger affected body surface area were consistently associated with QoL impairment in all three domains of Skindex‐29. Additionally, the QoL of patients aged 20–59 years, who potentially had a more active social life than older patients, was associated with functional impairment. Furthermore, a higher educational background was associated with emotional impairment.
Conclusions
A multitude of factors significantly influence the QoL of patients with vitiligo. A better appreciation of these factors would help the management of these patients.

Five-weekly S-1 plus cisplatin (SP5) is one of the standard first-line regimens for advanced gastric cancer (GC), proven in a Japanese phase III study. To enhance the dose intensity of cisplatin, ...3-weekly S-1 plus cisplatin (SP3) was developed.
This multicenter, randomized, open-label, phase III study evaluated whether SP3 (S-1 80 mg/m2/day on days 1–14 and cisplatin 60 mg/m2 on day 1) was noninferior/superior to SP5 (S-1 80–120 mg/day on days 1–21 and cisplatin 60 mg/m2 on day 1 or 8) in terms of progression-free survival (PFS). Chemotherapy-naive patients with metastatic, recurrent gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma were randomized 1 : 1 to receive either SP3 or SP5. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT00915382).
Between February 2009 and January 2012, 625 patients were randomized at 42 sites in Korea and Japan. With a median follow-up duration of 32.4 months (range, 13.3–48.6 months) in surviving patients, SP3 was not only noninferior but also superior to SP5 in terms of PFS median 5.5 versus 4.9 months; hazard ratio (HR) = 0.82; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68–0.99; P = 0.0418 for superiority). There was no difference in overall survival (OS) between the groups (median 14.1 versus 13.9 months; HR = 0.99; 95% CI 0.81–1.21; P = 0.9068). In patients with measurable disease, the response rates were 60% in the SP3 arm and 50% in the SP5 arm (P = 0.065). Both regimens were generally well tolerated, but grade 3 or higher anemia (19% versus 9%) and neutropenia (39% versus 9%) were more frequent in SP3.
SP3 is superior to SP5 in terms of PFS. However, since the improvement in PFS was only slight and there was no difference in OS, both SP3 and SP5 can be recommended as first-line treatments for patients with advanced GC.
