Synthetic plastic is used throughout daily life and industry, threatening organisms with microplastic pollution. Polystyrene is a major plastic polymer and also widely found sources of plastic wastes ...and microplastics. Here, we report that Enterobacter hormaechei LG3 (CP118279.1), a facultative anaerobic bacterial strain isolated from the gut of Tenebrio molitor larvae (mealworms) can oxidize and depolymerize polystyrene under anaerobic conditions. LG3 performed biodegradation while forming a biofilm on the plastic surface. PS biodegradation was characterized by analyses of surface oxidation, change in morphology and molecular weights, and production of biodegraded derivative. The biodegradation performance by LG3 was compared with PS biodegradation by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SCGB1 under both anaerobic and aerobic conditions. In addition, through nanopore sequencing technology, we identified degradative enzymes, including thiol peroxidase (tpx), alkyl hydroperoxide reductase C (ahpC) and bacterioferritin comigratory protein (bcp). Along with the upregulation of degradative enzymes for biodegradation, changes in lipid A and biofilm-associated proteins were also observed after the cells were incubated with polystyrene microplastics. Our results provide evidence for anaerobic biodegradation by polystyrene-degrading bacteria and show alterations in gene expression patterns after polystyrene microplastics treatment in the opportunistic pathogen Enterobacter hormaechei.

Parameter estimation of photovoltaic (PV) models from experimental current versus voltage (I-V) characteristic curves acts a pivotal part in the modeling a PV system and optimizing its performance. ...Although many methods have been proposed for solving this PV model parameter estimation problem, it is still challenging to determine highly accurate and reliable solutions. In this paper, this problem is firstly transformed into an optimization problem, and an objective function (OF) is formulated to quantify the overall difference between the experimental and simulated current data. And then, to enhance the performance of original cuckoo search algorithm (CSA), a novel improved cuckoo search algorithm (ImCSA) is proposed, by combining three strategies with CSA. In ImCSA, a quasi-opposition based learning (QOBL) scheme is employed in the population initialization step of CSA. Moreover, a dynamic adaptation strategy is developed and introduced for the step size without Lévy flight step in original CSA. A dynamic adjustment mechanism for the fraction probability (Pa) is proposed to achieve better tradeoff between the exploration and exploitation to increase searching ability. Afterwards, the proposed ImCSA is used for solving the problem of estimating parameters of PV models based on experimental I-V data. Finally, the proposed ImCSA has been demonstrated on the parameter identification of various PV models, i.e., single diode model (SDM), double diode model (DDM) and PV module model (PMM). Experimental results indicate that the proposed ImCSA outperforms the original CSA and its superior performance in comparison with other state-of-the-art algorithms, and they also show that our proposed ImCSA is capable of finding the best values of parameters for the PV models in such effective way for giving the best possible approximation to the experimental I-V data of real PV cells and modules. Therefore, the proposed ImCSA can be considered as a promising alternative to accurately and reliably estimate parameters of PV models.
Controlled assembly of colloidal nanoparticles onto solid substrates generally needs to overcome their thermal diffusion in water. For this purpose, several techniques that are based on chemical ...bonding, capillary interactions with substrate patterning, optical force, and optofluidic heating of light‐absorbing substrates are proposed. However, the direct assembly of colloidal nanoparticles on generic substrates without chemical linkers and substrate patterning still remains challenging. Here, photothermal convection lithography is proposed, which allows the rapid placement of colloidal nanoparticles onto the surface of diverse solid substrates. It is based on local photothermal heating of colloidal nanoparticles by resonant light focusing without substrate heating, which induces convective flow. The convective flow, then, forces the colloidal nanoparticles to assemble at the illumination point of light. The size of the assembly is increased by either increasing the light intensity or illumination time. It is shown that three types of colloidal gold nanoparticles with different shapes (rod, star, and sphere) can be uniformly assembled by the proposed method. Each assembly with a diameter of tens of micrometers can be completed within a minute and its patterned arrays can also be achieved rapidly.
A novel photothermal convection lithography technique for the direct and rapid assembly of colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles on generic substrates is proposed. Under the resonant light illumination, colloidal nanoparticles are spontaneously moved toward the focal point and densely assembled together. Each assembly can be completed within a minute and its patterned arrays can also be achieved rapidly.
Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is an age-related disorder characterized by the accumulation of extracellular material in the anterior eye segment. PEX pathogenesis is not fully understood, but ...amyloid which accumulates in the brain of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a PEX component. PEX deposition shares features with amyloid aggregation in AD, and brain atrophy is a common AD feature, with β-amyloid accumulation among contributing factors. This study investigated whether PEX syndrome is associated with AD-related brain atrophy.
We reviewed the medical records of patients diagnosed with PEX at the Veterans Health Service Medical Center between January 2015 and August 2021. This retrospective cohort study included 48 patients with PEX and 48 healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Patients with PEX were divided into two groups: with and without glaucoma. The main outcome measure was brain atrophy, using a visual rating scale, and AD incidence. Brain atrophy was measured using the Scheltens scale for medial temporal atrophy, the posterior cortical atrophy scale for parietal atrophy, and the Pasquier scale for global cortical atrophy.
The percentage of participants with medial temporal atrophy was 56.3% in the PEX group and 35.4% in the control group. The global cortical atrophy and parietal atrophy scores were significantly higher in the PEX group (P<0.05), whereas the PEX and PEX glaucoma groups showed no difference. Among the 96 participants, 16 and 5 participants in the PEX and control groups, respectively, were diagnosed with dementia. Patients with PEX glaucoma tended to have lower Mini-Mental State Examination scores, indicating impaired cognitive function, than those without glaucoma.
PEX is associated with brain atrophy, reflecting the risk of developing AD. Patients with PEX glaucoma may present with advanced AD stages. Our results suggest that PEX may be a predictor of AD.
To determine the effect of missing teeth on the risk of dementia onset among individuals who received tooth extractions and those who did not, based on the number of missing teeth.
We selected ...individuals who had not been diagnosed or treated for dementia between 2002 to 2011 from the National Health Insurance Service-Elderly Cohort Database (NHIS-ECD). We divided participants into two cohorts, a tooth extraction and non-extraction cohort, based on tooth loss from 2002 to 2011. After propensity score matching, there were 104,903 individuals in each cohort, and we included a total of 209,806 individuals in this study. Each cohort was grouped by sex, age, residential area, health insurance eligibility, income level, history of dental caries, history of periodontal treatment, and number of extracted teeth. We analyzed the relationship between dementia onset and these variables using logistic regression analysis.
Individuals with tooth loss had a higher risk for dementia than those without tooth loss (odds ratio OR = 1.18; 95% confidence interval CI: 1.146-1.215). Regarding the incidence of dementia, the OR increased as the number of missing teeth and age increased, and the OR was higher for women (OR = 1.33; 95% CI: 1.286-1.367) than for men, and this difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). The incidence of dementia decreased with periodontal treatment (OR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.932-0.992) and increased with dental caries (OR = 1.07; 95% CI: 1.035-1.101).
These results suggest that it is important to delay tooth loss and preserve the stable remaining teeth to help prevent dementia.
Cataracts and major depressive disorder (MDD) both have high prevalence, representing for major health burdens globally. In this study, we examined the risk of MDD due to cataracts. Data from the ...2016 to 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were used, including 4122 participants. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate the odds ratio for MDD in association with cataracts. Controlled variables were age, gender, smoking, dyslipidemia and mobility. Subgroup analysis was performed with stratification by gender. The results reveal that cataracts are significantly correlated with MDD. Elderly people with cataracts were found to be more likely to develop MDD compared to those without cataracts (adjusted odds ratio: 1.654; 95% CI = 1.197-2.286). In subgroup analysis, men (adjusted odds ratio: 2.631; 95% CI = 1.247-5.551) were found to be more likely to develop MDD than women (adjusted odds ratio: 1.510; 95% CI = 1.061-2.150). Cataracts may be a risk factor for MDD in the elderly, especially among the male population.
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an independent risk factor for lung cancer (LC) development; however, there are currently no clinical guidelines for LC surveillance in IPF. This study aimed to ...investigate the cumulative incidence and survival outcomes of LC in IPF. Using the National Health Insurance Service database, including medical information on people aged ≥ 40 years between 2011 and 2016, we identified IPF patients and confirmed the presence of comorbid LC. Patients diagnosed with IPF in 2011 were washed out, and mortality data were analyzed from 2012 to 2018. A total of 7277 newly diagnosed IPF patients were identified among Korean citizens aged ≥ 40 years (about 50 million people) between 2011 and 2016. Their average age was 71.5 years and 72.8% of them were male. The prevalence of LC in the IPF cases was 6.4%. The cumulative incidence rates of LC in IPF patients who did not have LC at the time of IPF diagnosis were 1.7%, 4.7%, and 7.0%, at 1, 3, and 5 years, respectively. The median time from IPF diagnosis to LC development was 16.3 (Interquartile range, 8.2-28.8) months. The survival rate was significantly lower in the IPF with LC group than the IPF without LC group (P < 0.001). We concluded that IPF increases LC risk, and LC weakens survival outcomes in IPF. Close surveillance for LC development is mandatory for patients with IPF.
Hypoxia in the tumor microenvironment is the leading factor in angiogenesis. Angiogenesis can be identified by dynamic contrast-enhanced breast MRI (DCE MRI). Here we investigate the relationship ...between perfusion parameters on DCE MRI and angiogenic and prognostic factors in patients with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Perfusion parameters (Ktrans, kep and ve) of 81 IDC were obtained using histogram analysis. Twenty-fifth, 50th and 75th percentile values were calculated and were analyzed for association with microvessel density (MVD), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and conventional prognostic factors. Correlation between MVD and ve50 was positive (r = 0.33). Ktrans50 was higher in tumors larger than 2 cm than in tumors smaller than 2 cm. In multivariate analysis, Ktrans50 was affected by tumor size and MVD with 12.8% explanation. There was significant association between Ktrans50 and tumor size and MVD. Therefore we conclude that DCE MRI perfusion parameters are potential imaging biomarkers for prediction of tumor angiogenesis and aggressiveness.
The burden of sepsis remains high in China. The relationship between case volume and hospital mortality among patients with septic shock, the most severe complication of sepsis, is unknown in China.
...In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed surveillance data from a national quality improvement program in intensive care units (ICUs) in China in 2020. Association between septic shock case volume and hospital mortality was analyzed using multivariate linear regression and restricted cubic splines.
We enrolled a total of 134,046 septic shock cases in ICUs from 1902 hospitals in China during 2020. In this septic shock cohort, the median septic shock volume per hospital was 33 cases (interquartile range 14-76 cases), 41.4% were female, and more than half of the patients were over 61 years old, with average hospital mortality of 21.2%. An increase in case volume was associated with improved survival among septic shock cases. In the linear regression model, the highest quartile of septic shock volume was associated with lower hospital mortality compared with the lowest quartile (β - 0.86; 95% CI - 0.98, - 0.74; p < 0.001). Similar differences were found in hospitals of respective geographic locations and hospital levels. With case volume modeled as a continuous variable in a restricted cubic spline, a lower volume threshold of 40 cases before which a substantial reduction of the hospital mortality rate was observed.
The findings suggest that hospitals with higher septic shock case volume have lower hospital mortality in China. Further research is needed to explain the mechanism of this volume-outcome relationship.
