A Mn-porphyrin was contacted on Au(111) in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Differential conductance spectra show a zero-bias resonance that is due to an underscreened Kondo ...effect according to many-body calculations. When the Mn center is contacted by the STM tip, the spectrum appears to invert along the voltage axis. A drastic change in the electrostatic potential of the molecule involving a small geometric relaxation is found to cause this observation.
Magnetic organic molecules, such as 3d transition metal phthalocyanines (TMPc), exhibit properties which make them promising candidates for future applications in magnetic data storage or spin–based ...data processing. Due to their small size, however, TMPc molecules are prone to quantum effects. For example, the interaction of uncompensated molecular spins with conduction electrons of the substrate may lead to the formation of a many-body singlet state, which gives rise to the so-called Kondo effect. Although the Kondo effect of TMPc molecules has been the object of several investigations, a consistent picture to describe under which conditions a Kondo state is formed is still missing. Here, we study the Kondo properties of MnPc on Ag(001) by means of the low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy (LT-STS) measurements. Differential conductance dI/dU spectra reveal a zero-bias peak that is localized on the Mn ion site. Ab initio calculations combined with a many-body treatment of the multiorbital interaction show that the local Hund coupling favors the high-spin configuration on the 3d shell of the central TM atom. Therefore, each orbital gets close to its individual half-filling creating the necessary condition for many of the 3d orbitals to contribute to the observed Kondo resonance. This, however, happens only for the 3d z 2 orbital, whose hybridization to the substrate is much stronger than for the other orbitals thanks to its shape and its orientation.
Using a numerically exact first-principles many-body approach, we revisit the “prototypical” Kondo case of a cobalt impurity on copper. Even though this is considered a well understood example of the ...Kondo effect, we reveal an unexpectedly strong dependence of the screening properties on the parametrization of the local Coulomb tensor. As a consequence, the Kondo temperature can vary by orders of magnitude depending on the complexity of the parametrization of the electron-electron interaction. Further, we challenge the established picture of a spin-1 moment involving two cobalt d orbitals only, as orbital-mixing interaction terms boost the contribution of the remainder of the d shell.
Adsorbed transition metal atoms can have partially filled d or f shells due to strong on-site Coulomb interaction. Capturing all effects originating from electron correlation in such strongly ...correlated systems is a challenge for electronic structure methods. It requires a sufficiently accurate description of the atomistic structure (in particular bond distances and angles), which is usually obtained from first-principles Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT), which due to the approximate nature of the exchange-correlation functional may provide an unreliable description of strongly correlated systems. To elucidate the consequences of this popular procedure, we apply a combination of DFT with the Anderson impurity model (AIM), as well as DFT + U for a calculation of the potential energy surface along the Co/Cu(001) adsorption coordinate, and compare the results with those obtained from DFT. The adsorption minimum is shifted towards larger distances by applying DFT+AIM, or the much cheaper DFT+U method, compared to the corresponding spin-polarized DFT results, by a magnitude comparable to variations between different approximate exchange-correlation functionals (0.08 to 0.12 Å). This shift originates from an increasing correlation energy at larger adsorption distances, which can be traced back to the Co 3dxy and 3dz2 orbitals being more correlated as the adsorption distance is increased. We can show that such considerations are important, as they may strongly affect electronic properties such as the Kondo temperature.
The ability of molecules to maintain magnetic multistability in nanoscale-junctions will determine their role in downsizing spintronic devices. While spin-injection from ferromagnetic leads gives ...rise to magnetoresistance in metallic nanocontacts, nonmagnetic leads probing the magnetic states of the junction itself have been considered as an alternative. Extending this experimental approach to molecular junctions, which are sensitive to chemical parameters, we demonstrate that the electron affinity of a molecule decisively influences its spin transport. We use a scanning tunneling microscope to trap a meso-substituted iron porphyrin, putting the iron center in an environment that provides control of its charge and spin states. A large electron affinity of peripheral ligands is shown to enable switching of the molecular S = 1 ground state found at low electron density to S = 1/2 at high density, while lower affinity keeps the molecule inactive to spin-state transition. These results pave the way for spin control using chemical design and electrical means.
Gold nanostructures have important applications in nanoelectronics, nano-optics, and in precision metrology due to their intriguing optoelectronic properties. These properties are governed by the ...bulk band structure but to some extent are tunable via geometrical resonances. Here we show that the band structure of gold itself exhibits significant size-dependent changes already for mesoscopic critical dimensions below 30 nm. To suppress the effects of geometrical resonances and grain boundaries, we prepared atomically flat ultrathin films of various thicknesses by utilizing large chemically grown single-crystalline gold platelets. We experimentally probe thickness-dependent changes of the band structure by means of two-photon photoluminescence and observe a surprising 100-fold increase of the nonlinear signal when the gold film thickness is reduced below 30 nm allowing us to optically resolve single-unit-cell steps. The effect is well explained by density functional calculations of the thickness-dependent 2D band structure of gold.
Nanostructures with open shell transition metal or molecular constituents host often strong electronic correlations and are highly sensitive to atomistic material details. This tutorial review ...discusses method developments and applications of theoretical approaches for the realistic description of the electronic and magnetic properties of nanostructures with correlated electrons. First, the implementation of a flexible interface between density functional theory and a variant of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) highly suitable for the simulation of complex correlated structures is explained and illustrated. On the DMFT side, this interface is largely based on recent developments of quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization techniques allowing for efficient descriptions of general four fermion Coulomb interactions, reduced symmetries and spin-orbit coupling, which are explained here. With the examples of the Cr (001) surfaces, magnetic adatoms, and molecular systems it is shown how the interplay of Hubbard
U
and Hund’s
J
determines charge and spin fluctuations and how these interactions drive different sorts of correlation effects in nanosystems. Non-local interactions and correlations present a particular challenge for the theory of low dimensional systems. We present our method developments addressing these two challenges, i.e., advancements of the dynamical vertex approximation and a combination of the constrained random phase approximation with continuum medium theories. We demonstrate how non-local interaction and correlation phenomena are controlled not only by dimensionality but also by coupling to the environment which is typically important for determining the physics of nanosystems.
Abstract
The quantum mechanical screening of a spin via conduction electrons depends sensitively on the environment seen by the magnetic impurity. A high degree of responsiveness can be obtained with ...metal complexes, as the embedding of a metal ion into an organic molecule prevents intercalation or alloying and allows for a good control by an appropriate choice of the ligands. There are therefore hopes to reach an “on demand” control of the spin state of single molecules adsorbed on substrates. Hitherto one route was to rely on “switchable” molecules with intrinsic bistabilities triggered by external stimuli, such as temperature or light, or on the controlled dosing of chemicals to form reversible bonds. However, these methods constrain the functionality to switchable molecules or depend on access to atoms or molecules. Here, we present a way to induce bistability also in a planar molecule by making use of the environment. We found that the particular “habitat” offered by an antiphase boundary of the Rashba system BiAg
2
stabilizes a second structure for manganese phthalocyanine molecules, in which the central Mn ion moves out of the molecular plane. This corresponds to the formation of a large magnetic moment and a concomitant change of the ground state with respect to the conventional adsorption site. The reversible spin switch found here shows how we can not only rearrange electronic levels or lift orbital degeneracies via the substrate, but even sway the effects of many-body interactions in single molecules by acting on their surrounding.

is one paradigmatic example where the strong electron, spin, and lattice coupling induced by electronic correlations results in a low-temperature spin transition and a high-temperature semiconductor-to-metal transition that is still not completely understood. Here, we monitor ultrafast metallization in LaCoO
3
using time-resolved soft x-ray reflectivity experiments. While the process is entangled at the Co
L
3
edge, the time information of the different channels is decrypted at different resonant energies of the O
K
edge. Metallization is shown to occur via transient electronic, spin, and lattice separation. Our results agree with the thermodynamical model and demonstrate the potential of femtosecond soft x-ray experiments at the O
K
edge to understand correlated oxides.
