Modern technologies enable the presentation of diverse movable and immovable cultural heritage objects in a digital environment in new and creative ways, which at the international level has resulted ...in the development of numerous and diverse digital collections created by information and other institutions. Since the visibility of such collections in the virtual environment depends on the wealth of metadata assigned to the sources in the collections, as expected, these initiatives were accompanied by development in the metadata domain. In this regard, and considering that the role of metadata in the presentation of turbe as very specific objects of the immovable cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the online environment has not been examined so far, the goal of this research is to identify which metadata standards or their combinations can be used for the description of turbe in Omeka Classic environment, and consequently to create a collection of the selected corpus of turbe, available in open access, whereby the corpus of research refers to turbe (türbe/tomb) that are named as national monuments in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The results of the research indicate that within the workspace of the Omeka Classic web publishing platform by using the predefined Dublin Core and VRA Core metadata fields in combination, the basic needs of corpus description can be met in a clear, uniform, and informative way, but in this regard, indications of the future development of the collection in the context of its semantic enrichment are also provided.
Cilj. Cilj rada je predstaviti historijski pregled formalnog obrazovanja bibliotekara u Bosni i Hercegovini, kao dijela njegove profesionalizacije, koji je u bosanskohercegovačkom kontekstu neophodno ...sagledati u okviru vrlo specifičnih historijskih i društveno-ekonomskih odnosa, te relativno kasne pojave formalnog obrazovanja bibliotekara u odnosu na svjetske prakse. Metodologija. Metodološki pristup temi ogleda se u istraživanju literature vezane uz razvoj obrazovanja bibliotekara u Bosni i Hercegovini i sintezi dosadašnjih istraživanja. Rezultati. Uvidom u relevantnu naučnu i stručnu literaturu uočeno je da je profesionalizacija bibliotekarstva složen proces koji se oslanja na opis poslova, zakonsku regulativu, definiranje kompetencija neophodnih za obrazovanje bibliotekara i različite oblike formalnog i neformalnog obrazovanja. Vrijednost. Rad je prilog istraživanju formalnog obrazovanja bibliotekara u Bosni i Hercegovini u smislu profesionalizacije te djelatnosti. Analizom je utvrđeno da je potrebno dodatno istražiti austrougarski period, u vezi s kojim je evidentan niz nepoznanica o edukaciji bibliotekara i načinima na koji su sticali bibliotečka znanja. *Rad je napisan na bosanskom jeziku.
Purpose: The aim of this paper is to present a historical overview of the formal education of librarians in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as part of its professionalization, which in the context of Bosnia and Herzegovina must be seen in the context of very specific historical and socio-economic relations and the relatively late establishment of formal education of librarians compared to world practices. Methodology: The methodological approach to the topic is reflected in the research of literature related to the development of education of librarians in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the synthesis of previous research. Results: An insight into the relevant scientific and professional literature shows that the professionalization of librarianship is a complex process that relies on job descriptions, legislation, defining competencies necessary for the education of librarians and various forms of formal and non-formal education. Value: The paper is a contribution to the research of formal education of librarians in Bosnia and Herzegovina in terms of its professionalization. The analysis has shown that it is necessary to further investigate the Austro-Hungarian period, which has evidently revealed a number of undefined issues about the education of librarians and the ways in which the librarianship knowledge was acquired
The global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus has significantly affected library processes and procedures in academic libraries worldwide, and the aim of this study is to determine how public ...academic libraries in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FB&H) have adapted and/or redefined their library and information services to pandemic circumstances. For the purposes of collecting such data, only librarians of those public academic libraries who have contact information (e-mail) displayed on the faculty / academy / university website were surveyed. The research itself, which is of a quantitative nature, was realized by using a survey questionnaire, which was created on Google Forms, in June 2021. Out of a total of 47 mapped libraries, 26 academic libraries participated in the survey (response rate of 55.3%). This research paper, which is first of its kind in Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, brings approaches of academic libraries which, unlike academic libraries from developed European countries, operate in very specific circumstances which are primarily characterized by limited and insufficient budgets for procurement of collections but also basic IT equipment. Results showed that despite the found inadequate elementary working conditions, academic librarians made certain efforts aimed towards meeting the information needs of library users during the world health crisis, but also that the pandemic emphasized the urgent need for digital transformation of surveyed academic libraries.
This paper analyses information literacy competencies of students at the Department of Comparative Literature and Library Science, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Sarajevo that offers bachelor's ...degree and master's degree in library science. Survey on information literacy competencies of library science students at the Department was realized by the online questionnaire for self-assessment that was developed on the basis of Permutation Model Components with the purpose to obtain insight in student’s perception of their information literacy competencies, to detect to what degree students improve their information literacy competencies and confidence during studies and what possible difficulties they face in this process. This is particularly important considering that there is no separate information literacy course adopted in Departments curricula but the information literacy related content is offered and taught in different courses. Analysis expectedly reveals that in general students feel confident in their information literacy competencies, that their information literacy competencies progressively improve during their studies, but also that students consider that the introduction of a stand-alone information literacy course would greatly contribute to the simpler and faster improvement of their information literacy competencies.
Collecting, processing, storing, preserving and disseminating scientific products of academic staff are essential for building the prestige of a university, especially bearing in mind that scientific ...publications have always been used as a means of evaluating the work of scientists. This paper argues for the need to involve academic libraries in the implementation of various university publishing programs oriented towards promotion or increasing the visibility of the results of academic research at the international level. Although librarians in academic libraries have the experience of collaborating in various publishing programs, such as e-journal publishing programs, conference proceedings, or technical reports, this paper will focus on the need for improving and adopting new roles for the needs of maturing and professionalizing of this prevalent activity. In this regard, this paper focuses on the important role of academic libraries in university publishing programs, highlighting two basic ways in which libraries contribute to these processes, as publishers and in supporting university publishing, emphasizing the benefits of including academic libraries in developing university publishing strategies. This paper focuses on the lack of discussions in the B&H scientific and professional literature about the importance of publishing in academic libraries, which from an economic point of view is indisputably important as a new source of funding on campus, which strengthens the financial independence of the university, especially in the period of establishing an effective science and innovation management strategy and encouraging excellence and relevance of scientific research. Drawing on the experience of academic libraries in the use and dissemination of scientific information within the scientific communication system, the paper concludes that effective positioning of the academic libraries in the publishing of scientific information can broaden and diversify the university’s publishing activities, especially in the context of open access initiatives (OA) and open science principles (OS).
Technological advancements and changes that society has consequently experienced, has revolutionary impact on libraries. Nevertheless, perception of libraries remains strongly rooted in the past ...regardless of the strong social, cognitive and emotional individual development in the environment that is determined by development of technology. Despite the notion of dynamic connection between modern information and technology consumers and assumptions about their exceptional skills, primarily in use, then automatically, in the process of finding information sources, their perception of libraries as “warehouses of books” remains traditional, without reflecting significant changes in the experience of using updated library services. In spite of the successful adaptation of libraries to the growing challenges of a complex information environment, the literature underlines the lack of consensus on the message that libraries are sending to society as a whole and which combines the complexity and value of its role within the community. Branding is one of the marketing concepts that determine the success of library marketing. Brand image, as an indicator of user perception of the library and brand identity as the way the library wants to be perceived, are key components within the branding process. Following the availability of user-generated content that expresses emotions and recent advances in automatic categorization of user-generated content on the web, as well as the availability of free sentiment analysis tools, the purpose of this paper is to experimentally examine the usage of sentiment analysis in the context of understanding library brand. Sentiment analysis deals with automatic extraction of positive or negative opinions from the text (Pang and Lee, 2008) and becomes a popular field of application of natural language processing with the aim of insight into consumer attitudes and opinions. The purpose of this paper is to examine how sentiment analysis can be used to gather information on how libraries are perceived in contemporary culture. It is intended to determine whether selected sentiment analysis tools can be used as an instrument for understanding library brand. Therefore, selected tools will be evaluated in relation to examples of libraries with evident branding efforts, but will also include words/ phrases to identify associations that appear in relation to the global library brand. The research will demonstrate that libraries are facing inherited bran perception, lack of a coherent vision identity, and the inability to define and communicate the new brand identity for digital libraries.
The Council of Europe’s Gender Equality Strategy 2018-2023, without neglecting the important issue of voluntary and forced migration in the European area and the particular “vulnerability” of migrant ...women and girls, addresses the protection of the rights of migrant, refugees and asylum-seeking women and girls in the ffth strategic objective by stressing out that “measures need to be taken to ensure that migrant, refugee and asylum-seeking women have access to their human and social rights in relation to individual freedom, employment, housing, health, education, social protection and welfare where applicable; and access to information about their rights and the services available.” In this regard, European experiences after the great migration wave from 2015 have already shown that the full and successful integration of migrant women and girls into European society requires the collaborative work of numerous national and international bodies, governmental and non-governmental sectors, and other relevant institutions and organizations, including libraries that should address special attention “to groups which are often marginalized in culturally diverse societies: minorities, asylum seekers and refugees, residents with a temporary residence permit, migrant workers, and indigenous communities.” (IFLA / UNESCO Multicultural Library Manifesto 2008). In this context, this paper will provide an overview of selected programs and services targeted at migrant women in public libraries in the European area. In conclusion, paper highlights the important role of public libraries in the processes of linguistic and social integration of migrant women, and points out the need for continuous improvement of programs and services designed for migrant women, which should be an integral part of diversifed public library services.
